Lafayette Vintage 2×12 Tube Combo Amp Univox c. 1960′s
It’s been a week of oddities here at the Birdhouse and this vintage Lafayette tube amp definitely falls into that category. This unusual amp was likely built in Japan in the 1960′s by the Univox Co. Sadly, there are no labels, badges or other characteristics that help to identify the exact model. It’s a point-to-point wired tube amp that uses a pair of vintage Jensen C12R’s. One Jensen is dated to 1962 and the other to 1973. It’s got two channels, each with normal and bright inputs, independent tone and volume controls, reverb and tremolo. The original foot switch is included with the amp. This amp is quite the looker. We’re not sure if the covering is original or not but it sure is eye popping! It’s covered in bright orange tolex with a raised floral / diamond pattern style grill cloth similar to Grandma’s table cloth. The overall condition is very good with very minimal peeling or tearing of the tolex and only a few scuffs and scratches. There’s a small run in the grill cloth. The tremolo is swampy and hypnotizing, very cool! The reverb is more subtle and almost subliminal. It’s not a very deep, Fender style reverb so if you really dig surf’verb, you’ll likely be disappointed. The tone is very bubbly and bouncy, bright and burnished but never thin or harsh. It cuts very well and has respectable volume. This amp is a very trippy, vibey 60′s amp with great tone!
