Who knew that Duncan designed great amplifiers too! A simple valve amp, yet with many features! It’s got two channels with a shared parametric EQ set of bass, mid and treble. Got a nice sounding onboard TRUE spring reverb with a large, long tank! Send and return jacks for effects loop. Also a footswitch (not included) jack. But there is also an onboard channel selector switch, which is really convenient. 2 10 custom made speakers round out the fairly stout feature set. But back to the 2 channels of this unit, as I’m guessing that the SOUND of this box is what you are wondering about. Channel one, which has a volume and overdrive knob that have “pull bright” and “pull boost” functions, is definitely your clean platform. I think the “overdrive” function is really a misnomer. Because even if you max out that knob and additionally pull out the boost, you will NOT get overdrive. What you DO get is a nice, shimmery V-x AC style “crunch” that sounds like the amp just crested the point over the edge of breakup. Makes sense since this machine has 4, count em’ FOUR EL-84 tubes! SD should really have called the overdrive knob on the 1st channel something more like the “grit” control! Now, channel two, you WILL get overdrive. It gets progressively dirtier. Not gonna get you into distortion territory, but pull out the boost and I feel that the amp goes into turbo overdrive! I really like the way the 84-40 sounds in this mode! Just make sure to turn down the gain when you do so, unless you want to get some gnarly fuzz…. You CAN get a version of it with the control set high and the boost pulled out. Makes this a very versatile sonic tool for you to paint your tonal landscapes! And Blues Rock phenom Joe Bonamassa LOVES these Seymour Duncan Amps, too!
