Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Vibro Champ, freshly serviced and very original. This little Blackface-era Fender wonder delivers five watts of pure Class A tube tone. A surprisingly loud amp with an alnico 8 speaker, this Vibro Champ has just the right amount of glassy, sparkling clean tone before pushing into smooth, lightly compressed tube overdrive at about 4 on the volume knob. Dynamic, responsive, and absolutely huge sounding when you put a microphone in front of it, it’s hard to beat the Vibro Champ for pure simplicity and great tone. And of course, Fender’s lush sounding tremolo circuit has a strong pulse and wide range of speeds, perfect for subtle shifts in volume or machine gun chop. The preamp is largely original, with new caps and low-noise metal film resistors substituted as needed to keep the amp operating optimally and running quietly. The stock Schumacher-made transformer pair is intact, dating between late 1964 and early’65. Visible date codes on the CTS pots date to the 8th week of’65, and the chassis stamp is from 1965. The tube chart is intact, with an “OG” code which translates to July of 1965. The tube compliment includes a JJ 6V6 power tube, a pair of Mullard-branded preamp tubes, and a vintage JAN/Phillips 5Y3 rectifier. The speaker is a vintage’70s era Fender-branded Oxford 8 with a clean Fender stamp on the alnico magnet. The original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth are intact, with some aging of the gloss and one snag below the Fender logo. The faceplate is well-kept, complete with its full compliment of witch hat knobs. The stock handle caps, sphinx glides (feet), and chassis straps are all intact, and the hardware shows sparingly little surface patina. This Vibro Champ is an ideal example of Blackface tone that sure to delight both collectors and serious players. A modern Fender footswitch to engage the vibrato is included, along with a padded cover. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
