If you are looking at this ad then you are probably well aware of the quality and reputation of the quintessential audio company Michaelson & Austin of the UK brand and their products which was founded in 1982 by. However, what we have here is a fine example of British audio history with the classic Michaelson & Austin TVP-X Thermionic Valve Pre-Amplifier in polished chrome and black with white lettering. While many of Tims designs are based on the engines and dash boards of classic motor cars, the TVP-X features include: Augmented chassis grille housing 12 ECC81/83 Valves, Stand By/Off, AUX, Tape 1+2, Moving Magnet and Moving coil phono inputs, Stereo/Mono switching, Subsonic Filter On/Off along with separate Main plus Left/Right attenuated volume control poteniometers and separate power supply. There are multiple inputs at the back along with 1/2 RCA outputs. Regarding the history and kudos of this pre-amplifier, this TVP-X has been used as a reference pre-amp and it has been a dream to listen to and operates without major issue. The work that Eddie Fincham meticulously, skillfully and sympathetically did included replacing some dated capacitors and resistors, fixed the power and stand by lights, fitted new gold plated RCA sockets along with adding a shaffner filter recommended to lower the noise floor further. In addition the pre/power supply connection cable was replaced and due to the configuration of the additional power sockets at the back the sockets were changed for safety reasons and to allow the unit to benefit from it’s full power potential. I have taken numerous additional pictures of the pre/PSU internals if anyone want to see more. Serial Numbers have worn over time. With regards to the sound of the Michaelson & Austin TVP-X. Whether listening to Jazz, Classical, Rock or Reggae, the TVP-X produces a full range and detailed vintage analogue sound-stage with excellent wall to wall stereo imagery. The bass is deep yet smooth and sounds neither tiring or bloated. Moreover, when partnered with some decent high end kit the treble and midrange have ample separation, air, detail, depth and clarity where voices, horns, pianos and strings produce a natural instrument sound quality which effortlessly ooze and float from the speakers. As for t he cosmetic condition. However, considering it’s age this Michaelson & Austin TVP-X is in very good condition and good working order with use and age related scuffs, rust and scratches and some paint removal on the power supply chassis top, sides, front and edges although nothing too serious or that detracts from it’s good looks and in my opinion just adds to it’s vintage charm and character. All the original chassis screws have been lost although cosmetically the chrome front is relatively scratch free and as such I’d rate it as 8/10 for cosmetics although 10/10 for sound. Operates using a 13amp plug. (See pictures of item powered on) Comes fitted with full set of Brimar and Mullard valves included for free. Finally, this is truly a museum piece and one of the most collectible and rarest Tim De Paravicini designed valve pre-amplifiers with less than a handful in existence and you will be hard pressed to find another like it in this condition anywhere (Hence the Price).
