Up for sale, a 1960 Fender Super in excellent condition and in perfect working order. One of the very first Brownface-era Fender Supers off the assembly line, this exceedingly rare amp is serial number 00085, with date codes from late 1959-January of 1960. Practically prototypical with its 5G4 circuit, this amp features the centrally located Volume knobs seen on the very first Brownface amps, as well as the factory plugged “Pulse Adjust” hole on the rear panel for a feature Fender intended to include, but opted out of in pre-production after the plates had already been printed. A direct descendant of the Tweed era Super amp, this Brownface example is notable for being one of few Supers to retain the same Triad transformers which were central to Fender’s Tweed amps. An incredibly touch-sensitive and dynamic amplifier with surprising headroom, the Super boasts hi-fi clarity and sparkling, robust clean tones. Turning the amp up past 5 on the volume dial yields thick, chewy overdrive, and the EQ controls have an incredibly wide sweep. Of course this is the most compact Brownface-era amp to feature the “Harmonic Vibrato” circuit as well. A true pitch shifting vibrato (not the tremolo found on most Fender amps), the Harmonic Vibrato sound has a thick, Leslie-esque throb and warble, with a three-dimensional quality and depth that is perfectly suited to the speaker compliment and cabinet size. Whether you want a slow, undulating swampy sound or faster, pulsating vibrato, this Super delivers the goods. The circuit is extremely original, and the amp retains its original Triad power and output transformers, while the choke was made for Fender by Schumacher, dating to the 50th week of 1959. The preamp is virtually untouched save for a few new smaller electrolytics and a fresh bias cap, retaining all of the original yellow Astron capacitors which are central to the sweet, musical tonality of Fenders Tweed and early Brownface amps. All of the original Stackpole pots are intact, with visible date codes from the 40th week of’59. The tubes consist of a matched pair of Tube Amp Doctor 6L6s, along with a JJ GZ34 rectifier and a host of newer preamp tubes. The speakers are a matched pair of era-correct Oxford 10K5s, both recently reconed with long metal bell covers for the alnico magnets. Under the bell covers, the magnets retain their clean date stamps from the 43rd week of’61. The tube chart is fully intact, noting the 5G4 circuit and complete with a “JA” date stamp that translates to January of 1960. The amp has been professionally retolexed by 3 Monkeys Amplifiers with correct rough brown tolex, and the baffle has been regrilled with the correct Oxblood grillcloth with gold stripe, another holdover from the Tweed era. All hardware is stock and accounted for including the rare light brown plastic “dogbone” handle, sphinx glides (feet), and flat “Fender” logo on the amp’s face. This Super is freshly tested and serviced, and ready for stage and studio use. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely. Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Concert in exceptional, collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with a vintage footswitch and cover. This Concert is time capsule clean cosmetically, incredible sounding, and complete with a quad of Oxford 10″ 10K5R-1 alnico speakers with long brown metal “Fender bell covers. The combination of the Brownface 6G12-A circuit and four very rare alnico Oxfords is truly something to behold. The amp delivers sweet, dynamic clean tones with incredible sparkle and a certain high fidelity clarity that is noticeable as soon as you strum your first chord. Turn the amp up past 5 and the amp starts to smoothly overdrive with just the right amount of bite and the complex midrange bark that makes Fender’s Brownface amps the perfect middle ground between the growl and attitude of Fender’s Tweed amps and the glassy shimmer of the Blackface era. The EQ controls have an incredible wide sweep, and this amp is uncommonly warm for any Fender, never feeling too bright or brittle, with the perfect amount of midrange and focused low end. The second channel boasts the Harmonic Vibrato circuit, which was the only Fender “Tremolo” circuit to ever have a true pitch shifting effect, with deep pulsating warbles and a wide range of speeds. The circuit is very clean and original, with stock transformers that date to mid-1961, as well as a full compliment of original yellow Astron and blue Ajax molded tone caps in the preamp. The original Astron Minimite filter caps are still intact and functioning as intended, while the smaller bypass and bias caps in the preamp have been swapped in favor of parts within factory tolerances and sleeved in their original Minimite wrappers. The pots date to mid-1961 and are all stock except for one replacement for the Vibrato Speed knob, with the new pot providing an ideal taper. The power tubes are a matched pair of vintage USA-made small bottle Tung Sol 6L6s, and the preamp tubes are all vintage valves from the likes of Sylvania and Amperex aside from one new JJ tube. The Oxford 10K5R-1 speakers are a matched quad, and the elongated brown metal bell covers (only used on the first alnico magnet versions of the 10K5) are an extremely rare and cool accent used for only a matter of months by Fender. Beneath the bell covers, the alnico magnets have date stamps from the 18th week of’61. The tube chart is fully intact on the bottom of the cabinet (the common placement for many of the earliest Brownface amps), with crisp corners and an “KD” date stamp from April of 1961. The original rough brown tolex and oxblood grillcloth are intact and in remarkable shape. As the photos show, the tolex and grill show sparingly little wear, and this amp is a great candidate for any collection or studio. The speaker frames and bell covers are exceedingly clean, consistent with the chassis itself and the Brownface faceplate. The original chassis straps, nickel corners, sphinx glides, and flat “Fender” logo are all in great shape and present. The original dogbone handle is present too and still clings to the handle mounts, although there are splits on the undersides of the handle (a new dogbone is also included). This is an extremely rare Fender Brownface Concert in stunning, original condition, complete with a vintage single-button footswitch to engage the vibrato. The amp also comes with a rare dark green cover, ostensibly original, and while different from the more common Victoria-made covers, we have seen this much rarer cover material on more than a couple early Brownface amps. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely. Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Super in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This Brownface Pre-CBS tube amp was produced early in’62 with original transformers, a very original and freshly serviced circuit, a full compliment of new tubes, and a pair of Oxford 10K5 speakers with original cones and molded brown Fender-branded bell covers. A direct descendant of the Tweed era Super amp, this early Brownface example delivers hi-fi clarity and sparkling, robust clean tones. Turning the amp up past 5 on the volume dial yields thick, chewy overdrive with great touch-sensitive responsiveness and EQ controls that have an incredibly wide sweep. And of course this is the most compact Brownface-era amp to feature the “Harmonic Vibrato” circuit. The circuit has just been thoroughly tested by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and virtually all of the original blue Ajax and yellow Astron capacitors in the preamp are intact. The original CTS pots are all present too, dating to mid-1961. All of the original transformers are present, made by Fender’s primary supplier Schumacher, with date codes from the 42nd to 46th weeks of 1961. The tube chart rounds out the applicable date codes, with an “LC” stamp that translates to March of 1962. The power amp has been recapped with new F&Ts to guarantee reliable, trouble-free use for years to come. The tubes consist of a matched pair of Sovtek 5881s (6L6GCs) along with a host of new preamp tubes from Groove Tubes and JJ. The speakers are a pair of vintage, era-correct Oxford 10K5s with clean frames, original cones, stock brown plastic molded bell covers, and date codes from’63. The rough brown tolex is intact on both the cabinet and both original back panels. The tolex shows some wear on the bottom front edge of the enclosure, along with some requisite light scuffs, but is overall in great shape. The grillcloth is a genuine piece of early’60s wheat cloth professionally installed on the original baffle. All hardware is stock and accounted for including the brown plastic “dogbone” handle, corners, sphinx glides (feet), and flat “Fender” logo on the amp’s face. This Super is extremely original, freshly tested and serviced, and ready for stage and studio use. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
