Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Bassman in excellent condition and in perfect working order, featuring a complete vintage tube set and matched pair of Oxford 12M6 speakers. An early iteration of the “Piggyback” Bassman with rough blonde tolex and oxblood grillcloth, this Brownface-era Fender drives two vintage Tung Sol 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes for 40 powerful watts of pure tube goodness. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brownface circuits respond well to picking dynamics with Fender’s hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a huge range and after around 5 on the Volume dial the amp cascades into very rich tube overdrive that compresses noticeably and is particularly roaring and thick. It’s the kind of natural tube saturation that only comes from pushing a well-designed Fender circuit to its limit. A Pre-CBS Fender Blonde Bassman was used on more Beatles recording sessions than the Vox AC30, was a particular favorite of Pete Townshend, and has become the amp forever linked with Brian Setzer’s classic Rockabilly tones. It’s hard to beat this particular Bassman circuit for a tone that bridges the gap between the dynamic grit of the Tweed circuits and the shimmery cleans of the Blackface line. The circuit is very original and has been well-maintained and recently serviced with fresh F&T filter caps. A few new smaller electrolytics in the preamp, and a modern three-prong power cable. All of the famed blue molded Ajax capacitors are intact in the preamp, an essential part of the sweet, musical character of Fender’s Brownface circuits. With stock Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and cloth wire. All of the Schumacher-made transformers are intact, with date codes that span late 1962 and early’63. The tube chart is intact inside the head cabinet, with an MC date stamp which translates to March of 1963. The tube compliment includes a pair of vintage Tung So power tubes that have been properly biased, and the preamp tubes are a matched set of vintage RCAs. The cabinet retains a matched pair of Oxford 12M6 speakers, an optimal and original pairing for the 6G6B Bassman circuit, with date stamps on the edges of the frames from the 42nd week of’62. Both speakers also boast professional and recent recones, ensuring a particularly clear sound with refined, tight bass response. Both the head and cabinet retain their original rough blonde tolex, and both have just been freshly regrilled with correct oxblood grillcloth. The tolex exhibits some various marks commensurate with age, with one small patch of replaced tolex on the back panel of the speaker cab. Both flat Fender logos on the head and cab are original, and the clean faceplate retains its full compliment of cream barrel knobs. The hardware includes the original piggyback clip bars, nickel corners, sphinx glides, and tilt-back legs, with a new pair of Fender piggyback thumbscrews. Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Bassman in near mint, collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. The last iteration of the 6G6-B Bassman circuit, this Brownface Bassman features original smooth blonde tolex, gold sparkle grillcloth and a black faceplate with cream barrel knobs (although the circuit is still of the earlier Brownface design). 100% original aside from new main filter caps and grid resistors, the amp is loaded with a full compliment of ostensibly original tubes, with a matched pair of gray plate 6L6GCs with very low hours. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brownface circuits respond well to picking dynamics with Fender’s hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a huge range and after around 5 on the volume dial the amp cascades into very rich tube overdrive with smooth compression that enhances note attack. It’s the kind of natural tube saturation that only comes from pushing a well designed Fender circuit to its limit. A Pre-CBS Fender Blonde Bassman was used on more Beatles recording sessions than the Vox AC30, was a particular favorite of Pete Townshend, and has become the amp forever linked with Brian Setzer’s classic Rockabilly tones. It’s hard to beat the Bassman for a tone that bridges the gap between the warmth and nuance of the Brownface circuits and the shimmery cleans of the Blackface line. The chassis shines like new and the preamp is virtually untouched, with all of the original blue Ajax tone caps, carbon comp resistors, cloth-covered wire, and Stackpole pots that date to late’63. All of the original Schumacher transformers are intact with very clean bells, dating between late’63 and the first weeks of 1964. New filter caps have been sleeved into the original wrappers, providing a clean, original look and guaranteeing optimal performance. The tube chart is fully intact on crisp, unfaded paper, with a bold “ND” date stamp which translates to April of’64. The speaker cabinet had likely never been opened prior to the photos taken for this listing, with all of the original fiberglass baffling intact, as well as a pair of near mint Oxford 12M6 speakers with early’64 date codes on the black frames. The wiring inside the cab is untouched, and both speakers retain their original cones. Cosmetically, this is the cleanest 6G6-B Bassman we’ve ever had in the shop, and both the head and cabinet retain their original transitional smooth blonde tolex and gold sparkle grillcloth, a combination only seen for a matter of months in early’64. Aside from a few light scuffs on the edges of the speaker cab, there’s virtually no wear to report. All of the original hardware is intact and is positively gleaming, including the tilt-back chrome legs, piggyback clip bars and thumbscrews, logos, and nickel corners. This is a no-excuses, collector-grade 6G6-B Bassman loaded with a full compliment of original tubes, stock speakers, and an extremely original circuit. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
