Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Bassman in excellent condition and in perfect working order, featuring the original matched pair of Oxford 12M6 speakers. An early iteration of the “Piggyback” Bassman with rough blonde tolex and wheat grillcloth, this Brown Panel-era Fender drives two Sovtek 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes for 40 powerful watts of pure tube goodness. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brown Panel circuits respond well to picking dynamics with Fender’s hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a huge sweep, and after around 5 on the Volume dial the amp cascades into rich tube overdrive that compresses noticeably and is particularly roaring and thick. It’s the kind of natural tube saturation that only comes from pushing a well-designed Fender circuit to its limit. A Pre-CBS Fender Blonde Bassman was used on more Beatles recording sessions than the Vox AC30, was a particular favorite of Pete Townshend, and has become the amp forever linked with Brian Setzer’s classic Rockabilly tones. It’s hard to beat this particular Bassman circuit for a tone that bridges the gap between the dynamic grit of the Tweed circuits and the shimmery cleans of the Black Panel line. The circuit is very original and has been well-maintained and recently serviced with fresh F&T filter caps. A few new smaller electrolytics in the preamp, and a modern three-prong power cable. All of the famed blue molded Ajax capacitors are intact in the preamp, an essential part of the sweet, musical character of Fender’s Brown Panel circuits. With stock Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and cloth-covered leads. All of the Schumacher-made transformers are intact, with date codes that span late 1962 and early’63. The tube chart is intact inside the head cabinet. The tube complement includes a pair of Sovtek power tubes that have been properly biased, and the preamp tubes consist of a combination of vintage and modern valves. The cabinet retains the original matched pair of Oxford 12M6 speakers, with date stamps on the edges of the frames from the 43rd week of’63. Both speakers also boast professional recones, ensuring a particularly clear sound with refined, tight bass response. The cabinet is missing its internal central divider, of virtually no sonic consequence. Both the head and cabinet retain their original rough blonde tolex and wheat grillcloth. The tolex exhibits some various marks commensurate with age, with a couple spots of light staining where sap in the knots of the pine cabinet has made its way through the tolex. Both flat Fender logos on the head and cab are original, and the clean faceplate retains its full set of cream barrel knobs. The hardware includes the original piggyback clip bars, nickel corners, sphinx glides, and tilt-back legs, with a new pair of leg stops. The dogbone handle on the head is original, and the one on the cab is a modern Fender replacement. Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Princeton in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This rare, transitional “tuxedo” Princeton features the Brown Panel 6G2 circuit with Black Panel cosmetics, a pairing that only lasted a few short months. The Princeton has a tone that is very dynamic and warm, with crystalline clean tones giving way to rich, saturated overdrive as you turn up the Volume knob. The circuit is as pure and straightforward as they come, and the single Tone knob has a surprisingly wide range. The bias based tremolo circuit has a strong, dimensional pulse and particularly broad range of speeds too. The circuit is 100% original, with the stock pair of Schumacher transformers which date to the very first weeks of’64, and a chassis stamp that dates to 1964 as well. The preamp retains all of the stock yellow Astron and blue molded Ajax caps, central to the sweet, musical quality of Fender’s golden age circuits. All of the original CTS pots are intact, with visible date codes from the 8th week of’64. The tube complement includes a pair of Electro Harmonix 6V6 power tubes, with a pair of vintage preamp tubes from the likes of RCA, and a vintage 5Y3 rectifier. The tube chart is fully intact inside the cabinet, and the “NE” date code which translates to May of’64. The speaker is an era-correct square magnet CTS 10 driver, matching the cosmetics and tonal characteristics of the original driver. The original smooth black tolex is extremely clean with only a few minor scuffs and light edge wear, while the baffle retains its silver sparkle grillcloth which shows very minimal aging. All the stock hardware is present including chassis straps, sphinx glides, handle caps, and a set of original white barrel knobs. This is a Custom made Cabinet with a MC-25 Masco chassis. The amp is driving out of 2 X 12 speakers.. 1 speaker is a vintage Oxford 2ND speaker Rola.. The amp sounds amazing. Has some serious power. Nice bass response and also breaks up really easy… I never even pushed past 3/4 volume…. There are 2 channels, the third channel i believe was for a phono but is not hooked… The 1 and second knobs are marked mic.. The 4th knob is power and treble… Sounds between a thunderbolt the the bass response of a twin… Overall this is a great amp.. The channel 1 had a bit static. But seemed to go away.. 2 ND channel ran strong and quiet.. The amp weighs 53 LBS…. CA, NV, WA, FL, TX. The Concert is the successor to the tweed Bassman 4×10, with a great sound and the famous harmonic vibrato that is unique to the brown face amps. Overall, this is a fantastic sounding vintage amp that is plenty loud enough to gig with, and a great value compared to other vintage Fender amps. This one has been serviced and had a few parts replaced (including the OT and speakers), so its a reliable player grade amp. There’s a couple small holes in the top from another handle, and holes on the bottom from casters, and general wear and tear from a 58-year-old amp, but it looks pretty good overall and sounds wonderful. Im no amp expert when things get technical, so please review the photos carefully, below is a recap of whats been changed or updated, from the previous owner. Fender Brown Concert 1961. In good working condition with great sound and famous “harmonic” vibrato. Original: All yellow mustard caps and power filter caps, power transformer #67233, choke #606049, brown tolex cabinet, front grill, 2-outlet power connector. Upgraded: Magnetic Components Classic Tone output transformer 40-18007. 4×10 new Jensen C10Q speakers, new handle, new logo, Mojotone top back panel, maybe some new resistors and small caps on circuit board… All serviced by previous owner.
