The Hilgen amps are very hard to come by as they weren’t really mass produced and were only made for three years. This one is fully serviced with no issues or weird quirks, and ready for years of enjoyment! The Challenger is an 18W all-tube point to point handwired 112 combo with two channels that each have individual volume and tone controls, with onboard reverb and tremolo. The first channel is more Fender-y and has guitar and bright inputs. The second channel is a bit richer and reminds me of vintage Ampeg (which Jack also supposedly helped with designs as they were both New Jersey companies), and has instrument and accordion inputs. All jacks and controls work as should. I replaced the electrolytic caps and one out of tolerance wax & paper capacitor with new audio grade caps. All of the original Mullard mustard caps are still intact!! I also removed the death cap and installed a grounded power supply cable for safety. I cleaned all pots, jacks, and power/rectifier tube sockets. This uses a 6X4 (reverb driver), two 12AX7, and two 12AU7 in the preamp. It also uses a pair of 7591 power tubes and a 5U4GB tube rectifier. This comes with the original CTS 12 speaker that still sounds great also! The reverb is pretty unique as it’s a shorter and slightly brighter one, although it sounds great and works really well with the circuit. The tremolo is currently in Off position and the previous owner couldn’t find the footswitch. Any standard two button footswitch with a 1/4 jack should do the trick though. Cosmetically it’s in pretty great shape for being a little over fifty years old! The original grill cloth and tolex are both fully intact and the faceplate still looks great! One of the rubber feet is partially broken off and it does show some minor wear from age though. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. I will remove the power and rectifier tubes and package them separately inside the amplifier.
