Up for sale, a 1960 Ampeg Guitaramp 518 Dolphin Special vintage tube amp in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Not to be confused with the numerous “Jet” reissues offered by Ampeg over the decades, this is a genuine original model 518 with early and rare “Navy Random Flair” tolex only used on the first few years of production. The tone is extremely dynamic and sensitive to your pick attack, and while the amp can deliver a slightly scooped clean tone at low volumes, this Ampeg has an incredible amount of gain on tap with an abundance of rich, warm, bold tones at hand. At around 4 on the volume dial the amp starts to sizzle and roar with a compressed churn, and the tone control is particularly responsive for thickening or thinning out the sound as necessary. It’s an ideal recording amp with a surprising amount of volume via a vintage alnico Ampro Deluxe 12 speaker. The circuit remains very original, having been freshly serviced in-house here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and recapped as necessary to ensure optimal performance. The original transformers are intact, and the amp has been fitted with a new three-prong power cable. The tube compliment includes a pair of new, freshly biased Tung Sol 5881 (6L6) power tubes, with vintage Sylvania and General Electric-branded valves for the preamp and rectifier. The vintage Ampro Deluxe speaker has a very clean frame with original foil label on the bell cover, and the speaker has been freshly reconed. Visible inside the cabinet, the tube chart is also fully intact with a serial number from 1960. Cosmetically, this amp is clean for an enclosure pushing 60, with original Navy Random Flair tolex (deep blue with silver sparkles), silver sparkle grill cloth, and new leather handle. The tolex is completely intact, with light peeling at the seams, and aging in the grillcloth. On the chrome faceplate, most of the original white silkscreen lettering is intact and the chrome plating shows light patina. The full compliment of original knobs is present too. This is a very clean and professionally serviced example of an uncommon, early Ampeg model. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! Up for sale, a 1962 Ampeg R-12R Reverberocket in exceptional condition and perfect working order with notably clean “Navy Random Flair” tolex, the original Jensen P12R speaker, and stock amp cover. Under the oversight of Ampeg by founder Everett Hull, Ampeg guitar amps were geared towards jazz guitarists who wanted clean headroom and zero breakup, but according to former Ampeg employee Ken Fischer (long before starting his own company Trainwreck Amplifiers), there was one model that “slipped through the cracks”, and that was the R-12R Reverberocket. This amp has a fantastically spongy feel with plenty of chewy compression, thanks is large part to the octal preamp tubes (6SN7s and 6SL7s in this case), and picking dynamics are glorious, particularly when the amp is cranked to “edge of breakup” tones. The Reverberocket boasts footswitchable bias-based tremolo, along with onboard reverb (the first amp to do so, predating Fenders Vibroverb by a year or two), which is thick and lush without sacrificing clarity. The circuit has been thoroughly serviced with new capacitors in the preamp to keep everything working within original factory spec. The transformers have been swapped out in favor of Mercury Magnetics “Tone Clone” USA made iron, and the power supply has been professionally recapped to ensure that the amp is operating optimally. The original CTS pots date to mid 1961, the schematic on the inside of the back panel is dated March, 1962, while the Jensen speaker dates back to the last weeks of 1959. The preamp tubes are all “Ampeg” branded valves made by Sylvania and are a combination of original tubes and vintage stock sourced so that the tube set could be uniform, and these vintage tubes are an essential part of the incredible tone of this amp. The power tubes are a pair of newer JJ 6V6s. The reverb tank is a factory-spec replacement, and a three-prong power cable has also been installed. The chrome faceplate is near mint, with all of the original white silkscreened text intact as well as stock knobs. On the inside of the cabinet, the original tube chart is intact and the original Jensen P12R 12 alnico speaker sounds fantastic, with warmth, detail, and clarity. The original Navy Random Flair tolex is near mint aside from one scuff on the back panel, and still retains a good concentration of the silver sparkles that often flake off over time. The stock metal corners, feet, leather handle and raised Ampeg logo are also intact. This Ampeg would make a great option for anybody that wants a gigging or recording amp that gives up the goods without being earth-shakingly loud! The original two-button Reverb/Tremolo footswitch is included along with the original dark blue vinyl amp cover with white piping. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to assure that your amp arrives safely.
