This is a late 60s Sears 5XL, aka the model 1420. Uses 3 tubes, a 12au6 for preamp, 50c5 for power, and a 35w4 as a rectifier. This is one of 7 I’ve owned – they’re light, cheap, easy to fix, easy to mod, and still manage to sound pretty good. I usually add an isolation transformer, a fuse, and a grounded cord, but this one is still unmolested. All I did was replace the resistors and caps that were out of spec. I did mark the neutral side of the plug for extra safety, but I wouldn’t play this one while standing in a bathtub. Tolex on the case is still in okay shape. There’s some dried tape residue on the cab, so old it won’t come off. These are fun amps, especially if you like to carry them to practice or gigs — you don’t need a friend with a van, Or even a friend. I haven’t built one of these vintage stand alone amps for a few years. But came across this powerhouse Silvertone EL84 Stereo amp, and I just had to bring it back to life.. What a fantastic sounding amp! All you need is a pair of 8 ohm or higher speakers and you can simply hook up your ipod or iphone to this! If you want to run something like a CD player, you would of course need a preamp.. This amp is super quiet. No noise whatsoever on pause or in between music tracks. This has all new electrolytics, including a CE USA can capacitor. A re-filled original cardboard can capacitor, new silicon diodes, AC cord, red pilot light in front, a. On/off switch, rca inputs for your music source, and speaker binding posts for connecting your 8 ohm or higher speakers. Four Silvertone EL 84′s, all matched, and dual 12AX7a’s, NOS Sylvania. Chassis was painted in a fun red. And the amp is mounted on a custom board with vintage black coverings. This amp looks cool, and sounds awesome! What more can I say? Thanks for looking, Jimmy O. Up for sale, a 1965 Silvertone model 1485 piggyback tube amplifier in excellent condition, freshly serviced and in perfect working order. A vintage USA-made amp crafted by Danelectro for Sears’ house brand Silvertone, the amp features the original dolly and sextet of matching Jensen C10Q speakers, loaded with a new properly biased small bottle Tung Sol 5881 (6L6) power tube quad. The 1485 as advertised by Silvertone pushes a whopping 120 watts, but stripping away the marketing, this amp functions closer to 100 watts via the power tube quad. Extremely powerful and articulate, these amps have much more headroom, punch, and top end response than the smaller 1484, and can produce both bold cleans and roaring overdrive. The smooth articulate crunch of this model has found favor with players across the spectrum, and it responds very well to pedals too. Both channels feature a pair of inputs (high and low) and both channels share the built-in Reverb and Tremolo effects. While the Tremolo has a nice strong pulse that gets quite thick and deep, the Reverb is infamous in its own right for its thin, trashy sound that’s perfect for lo-fi and surf tunes, with a unique gain structure and chiming top end character. The circuit has been thoroughly overhauled by our in-house techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and the amp is a robust, gig-worthy machine, featuring a fully recapped power supply while retaining a bevy of original capacitors and carbon comp resistors. The stock output transformer is intact, while the power transformer is a heavy duty replacement, along with a modern Heyboer choke. The original CTS pots date back to the 32nd week of’65. The speakers are a particularly clean sextet of original Jensen C10Q 10 drivers, with minty black frames and 1965 date codes. Two of the speakers feature brand new cones, while the other four are original. All of the original barrel knobs are intact on the polished aluminum faceplate, which also retains all of the original black silkscreen text. The amp retains its original charcoal covering which shows some honest wear on the edges of the cabinet and head enclosure, and the original grillcloth has plenty of sparkle in the gold thread. The head secures into the back of the cabinet with the original swiveling nylon tabs, and even the original dolly is included, secured to the bottom of the cab.
