For sale is a 1968/69 Traynor YSR-1. This amp is from the late 60′s. Its transformers look to be from 1968, but there is no database to decipher Traynor serial numbers(most info appears to be about YBA-1 amps which have a different system of serial numbers). Its serial number is S71306, so those that know more about Traynor history can weigh in. This YSR-1 has a choke which means it’s from the pre 1970 changeover to amps that no longer use a choke & have a totally different cabinet. The late 60′s version of the YSR-1 has the dual indicator jewel lights that go from red for Standby to green for Operate(on). The amp is missing the original Traynor faceplate, otherwise it’s in very good cosmetic condition. The earlier Traynor logo often broke, so many of 65-70 Traynor amps no longer have them. Some people often compare the YSR-1 to the more well known Traynor YBA-1, but they behave totally different in real world usage. For sure the tone stack isn’t quite the same. While the YBA-1 is based on a Bassman 5F6A, the YSR-1 seems closer to a 6G/”Brownface” type amp. The preamp of the YSR-1 has greater top end clarity with a bit less overdrive than the Traynor YBA-1. As a result, the YSR-1 is a great amp to use as a pedal platform. I own both YBA-1 & YSR-1 amps and prefer the YSR-1 a bit more to the YBA-1. The Traynor YSR-1 features 6 12AX7 preamp tubes with a pair of EL34 power tubes. The amp has an 8 ohm output with a power spec of 45-50 watts RMS. The amp features an Ampeg like reverb mixed with a Vox type pulsing tremolo. The amp has a burly & robust tone that ranges from an excellent clean sound at lower volumes to a biting overdrive when it’s pushed hard. This amp has been modded to have a master volume. The first two volume controls function as a pre-amp gain & master volume respectively rather than separate volume controls for Input 1 & 2. I thought about taking it back to stock, but this master volume mod makes the amp far more versatile. The amp can be set to have a bit more preamp gain that gives more shades of overdrive at lower volumes that many clubs ask bands to play at. Like an older Marshall, the two YSR-1 channels can be jumped to give the amp a fuller sound. In this instance t. He normal(1) & bright(2) inputs are jumped to give both signals at the preamp gain pot. Jumper cable will be included. I had the amp checked out by a tech a couple of months ago and it passed all tests. The circuit board still has many of the Philips “Mustard Caps” that are similar to the Mullard variants that were used in early Marshall amps. I have played the amp a bunch for the past couple of months and really do like this amp. I own 2 dozen amps, so something has to give. I used this amp either with a mid 60′s Fender Bandmaster 2×12 with late 70′s Celestion G12-80 or a Marshall 4×10 cab with late 70′s Celestion G10-50. Both cabinets work great with the amp, but I really love this amp driving the 4×10 best. No speaker cabinet will be supplied.
