1962 Magnatone Custom 262 Jupiter Vintage Tube Amp 2x12 Collector-Grade with Tag

Up for sale, a 1962 Magnatone Custom 262 Jupiter vintage tube amplifier in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original footswitch and hangtag. Virtually identical to the 260 model, this Estey-era Magnatone was rebranded as the 262 Jupiter for the accordion market who were a large part of Magnatone’s client base in their heyday. The amp features an ostensibly original set of all vintage tubes, with a matched 6L6 General Electric power tube pair, as well as a 2×12 speaker configuration with original Oxfords and lush pitch shifting vibrato. This Magnatone features two channels with individual Volume and EQ controls as well as two-way Tone toggles for each channel. Driven by the aforementioned GE 6L6 power tube pair, the amp has a rich, lush sound capable of delivering both articulate cleans and overdriven roar when pushed hard. Of course at the heart of any Magnatone is their varistor-based true pitch shifting vibrato circuit, which is thick and watery, with a Leslie-esque swirl and unequalled dimension. As a top of the line Magnatone amplifier, the 262 Jupiter has a complex true point-to-point hand-wired circuit which is 100% original save for a couple new resistors and a single capacitor, fully vetted by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar. The circuit retains all of the original blue Ajax molded caps in the preamp and CTS pots that date to the 21st week of 1962. The original Schumacher transformers are intact, dating between late 1961 and early 1962. The GE 6L6 power tubes are properly biased and sound exquisite, paired with a Sylvania rectifier and preamp tubes from the likes of Telefunken and GE, all with nigh flawless silkscreen text on the glass. The amp retains its original pair of alnico magnet Oxford 12K5 12 drivers with very clean frames and original cones. The date stamps on the frames are from the 22nd week of 1962, matching closely with the pots and transformers. The original brown bindery cloth covering is exceedingly clean, especially notable on a Magnatone given the fragility of this material when compared to Fender’s tolex. There is very light edge wear, mostly relegated to the bottom 20% of the enclosure, and the original grillcloth is intact too with gold sparkle thread and the original Estey badge in the lower right corner of the baffle. The faceplate is quite well kept, with clean silkscreened graphics and all of the original barrel knobs. The amp comes complete with its original wooden wedge footswitch to engage the vibrato, as well as the original two-sided large Magnatone hangtag. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely. No mid-fi, no gimmicks, no junk. Each piece of equipment is cosmetically restored and fully tested in our well-equipped lab by an engineer with 30+ years of experience in the HiFi world. Through our sister company, which is an authorized dealer for McIntosh, Audio Research, Sonus Faber, ClearAudio, Project, and Sony ES, we have access to OEM parts, service, and support. This listing is for a working set of Mark VI Monoblocks in working condition. Features rare XLR inputs for an amplifier this age. Cool bias meter on the front with rack handles. This pair of amplifiers is labeled “Dynaco Wired”, however they have underwent a significant modification at some point in the past. The majority of the electrolytic capacitors were replaced, film bypass capacitors were added to the various power supply rails, and slow start relay circuits were added to delay the B+ voltages. Other modifications may have been performed that we are unaware of that sharp Dynaco aficionados may recognize. Both amplifiers were tested to their rated power of 120W. Both meter lamps and meters are working properly. Tubes include RCA 7199, and a mix Sylvania and Philips USA 8417. Please see our pictures for overall condition. The Mark VI is a vacuum tube high power basic power amplifier designed for the professional sound installer. Vacuum tubes are most often favored in their ability to withstand enormous physical and electrical abuse – conditions frequently encountered in discotheques, public address and musical instrument applications. Its rugged construction and utilization of superior components, including the patented Dynaco Super Fidelity transformers, permit continuous duty at full power, while maintaining safe operating margins. Protective isolation of the load from the driving circuits, and uniform power output into a variety of load impedances are inherent in all designs which use an impedance matching transformer. The Mark VI employs a basic circuit arrangement which all Dynaco vacuum tube amplifiers have used since the inception of the Mark II amplifier in 1955. Refinements of the operating parameters have been incorporated for circuit balance, stability, and for drive capability. The components used have been selected to protect against failure, and all parts are operated conservatively to assure superior performance and proper operation for many years. The SkyFi Testing Process for Tube Amplifiers. We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure there are no signs of stress or aging. Capacitors are checked for telltale sings of bulging or leaking, resistors are checked for signs of overheating or cracking, and tubes are inspected for signs of stress overheating or cracking. We then power up the unit carefully and run a simple 1k sine wave while monitoring the output on an oscilloscope for signs of distortion or noise. Finally we run the amplifier to its full rated power into the appropriate resistive load provided by our Sencore amplifier tester. If there is an issue, it will usually be noticeable at this point. If it all looks clean we will often test for THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) measured by our Keithley distortion meter, and compare it against the original manufacturers specifications. The amplifier the remains powered on to “burn in” on our test bench for a few hours to make sure there are no heat related issues. If there are balanced inputs available they will also be tested. We also test all tubes for output gain and leakage on our calibrated modern and professional tube tester against the original manufacturers specifications. If needed, the tubes will be replaced from our vast NOS (New Old Stock) vintage or modern inventory. Final testing involves pushing actual music thorough the amplifier. We’ve learned over time that some issues are only noticeable to a trained ear while listening to familiar source material. Our test bench has reference vintage KEF speakers that we’re very familiar with which quickly reveal any discrepancies. Some amplifiers will then move into our listening room where they are tested with our in-house reference speakers of choice. 120 watts into 8 (mono). 10 Hz to 40 kHz. Signal to noise ratio. 4 x 8417, 1 x 7199. 19 x 10.5 x 8.75 inches. We have too many items for sale and its nearly impossible to keep track of offers outside of the official system. We accept trade-ins of equal or lesser value under certain conditions. Please visit our website to submit your gear for full consideration. We will only consider high-end equipment from mainstream manufacturers such as McIntosh, Mark Levinson, Audio Research, Krell, etc. And will typically pass on displays, projectors, receivers, dated surround processors, and mid-fi equipment of any type. We will offer a fair value for your equipment, but keep in mind were running a business and will need to be able to resell the equipment at a profit after investing a great deal of time and resources in testing, certifying, repairing, cleaning, and packaging the incoming equipment. SELL US YOUR GEAR (Working or Broken). Simply visit our website to submit your gear for full consideration. We are currently operating from our shop inside our dedicated building in Glen Rock, NJ. We have several well-equipped and dedicated listening areas, plus a dedicated listening studio with tons of equipment of all makes and models. Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Princeton in collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. This stunningly well-kept Brown Panel Princeton features the 6G2 circuit and a full complement of vintage tubes. The Princeton has a tone that is very dynamic and warm, with crystalline clean tones giving way to rich, saturated overdrive as you turn up the Volume knob. The circuit is as pure and straightforward as they come, and the single Tone knob has a surprisingly wide range. The bias based tremolo circuit has a strong, dimensional pulse and particularly broad range of speeds too. The circuit retains the original pair of Schumacher transformers with matching date codes from the 13th week of’62, and the preamp is extremely original with all of the original blue molded Ajax caps, which have a particularly sweet, musical tonal character central to Fender’s Pre-CBS amps. The original Stackpole pots are intact, and the larger multi-section can cap and smaller electrolytics in the preamp are modern high quality components to ensure optimal functionality. A three-prong power cable has also been installed. The tube complement includes a pair of voltage matched Sylvania 6V6s with a Philco-branded 5Y3 rectifier and vintage preamp tubes as well. The original alnico magnet Oxford 10JB speaker is intact with an extremely clean frame, original speaker harness, and date stamp from the 32nd week of’61. The original tube chart is well preserved inside the cabinet, retaining an “LC” date stamp which translates to March of 1962. Cosmetically, the original rough brown tolex has barely a scuff on it, and the original wheat grillcloth is also extremely clean. The faceplate is nigh flawless, retaining the original brown barrel knobs. Even the original leather handle is intact, as is all of the hardware including handle caps, chassis straps, and sphinx glides (feet). A modern replica one-button footswitch for engaging the Tremolo is included, along with a modern black padded cover. I also listed a vintage Gibson Rhythm King and Magnatone amp.. From the private collection of Ultimate Spinach founding member and bass player Rich Nese. I will be listing some of Rich’s personal vintage music gear, memorabilia and autographed items. This amp is from the 1960′s. It was powered on a few years back but it has mostly been in storage most of it’s life so I would obviously recommend it receiving a complete and very thorough tune up before being used again. It may or may not need some very light repairs. Own a VERY cool piece of 1960′s psychedelic music history! Thank you very much. Non tested, but fuses are not blown. These Ampex tube amplifiers are well regarded for their build quality, particularly the Triad output transformers. These are a very clean all original pair, with only one non original output tube. The 12au7s and EF86 tubes are Amperex. The rest are GE with the exception of one Sylvania 6973. The cords are cut because they were crumbling when I removed them from the console, and they were basically bare wires. See preamp and tuner to be listed in the coming days.
