This listing is for a vintage RCA 45-EY-3 automatic 45 RPM record changer (RP-190) with an internal 3 tube audio amplifier (RS-136E) that has been professionally MAGnetics. Audio restored; cosmetically, mechanically, and electronically. It looks and functions just like it did over 70 years ago but includes many upgrades and improvements to the original design. Most significantly, the phono cartridge has been upgraded from an obsolete, heavy crystal type to a modern, lighter ceramic type requiring less vertical tracking force (VTF) and includes a modern diamond stylus to improve sound and preserve your records. This also lets you play newer stereo 45 RPM records from the 1970s to 2000s (played monaurally) as well as older mono 45 RPM records from the 1950s & 60s like the original 45-EY-3 did. This restoration entailed the following. Disassembled RP-190 chassis and inspected, cleaned, adjusted, and lubricated all parts requiring it. Replaced the dried out and hardened rubber tire on the Cycling Cam with a new one. Replaced the old Idler Wheel with a new machined aluminum Idler Wheel with neoprene tires. Rebuilt motor; Disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and tested. Installed new Motor Mounts. Cleaned and polished all exterior surfaces of the Turntable and Tonearm without repainting the RP-190 chassis to maintain original vintage appearance and patina. Disassembled the turntable spindle nose cap, removed and cleaned the record drop and separator mechanism, and tested after reassembly. Removed Tonearm and replaced old tone wire set with new modern wire set. Replaced the old crystal phono cartridge with a new modern ceramic cartridge, including a 0.07 elliptical diamond tip stylus. Adjusted cartridge mount for correct vertical tracking angle (VTA), as well as adjusting stylus clearance for maximum record changer capacity. Cleaned, lubricated and reassembled the RP-190 chassis. Adjusted and tested record-changing operation, including Tonearm lift height, and Tonearm positioning for correct record starting and ending (runout recycling trip). Cleaned and polished the Bakelite cabinet. Restored internal audio tube amplifier (RS-168E). Replaced vacuum tubes with new old stock (NOS) tubes. I nstalled a new safety polarized power cord. Replaced all old paper capacitors with modern tone capacitors. Tested and replaced any resistors or other electronic components that were out of specifications. Cleaned amplifier chassis and used “DeoxIt D5″ on volume control. Bench tested amplifier performance using signal generator, oscilloscope & distortion analyzer. Test operated amplifier for over 4 hours to “burn in” tubes and verify proper tube biasing. Installed the completed RS-136E tube amplifier and RP-190 record changer chassis into the case and conducted final testing of the completed RCA Model 45-EY-3. Fine-tuned the mechanicals and played over 50 records on it while monitoring sound quality, record cycling operation, reject lever, and tonearm movement (see video). Everything works flawlessly and it works better than new, because of all the upgrades like the aluminum idler wheel that is machined round to a very high tolerance level, the modern tone capacitors, and improved phono cartridge. General Specifications of an RCA 45-EY-3 Record Changer. The RCA 45-EY-3 is an iconic 1950s Bakelite “Suitcase” type portable record changer and audio amplifier designed exclusively for 7-inch 45 RPM records. It is a “mechanical marvel” recognized for its lightning-fast, automatic changing of up to 12 stacked records. The 45-EY-3 is a stand-alone player that requires no connections to external equipment. It just needs to be plugged into an AC wall outlet. It is a record changer, not just a player; it uses a large central spindle to stack and automatically drop up to 12 records, featuring a notably fast, mechanical changing cycle. Features a simple, single knob start/reject function. Without an automatic stop, the last record on the stack will repeat indefinitely until the tonearm is manually lifted from the record. Volume is controlled via a single knob located underneath the top cover of the Bakelite cabinet. RS-136E audio amplifier contains the following vacuum tube types: 35W4, 50C5, and 12AV6. The RCA 45-EY-3 record changer is a self-contained portable suitcase style unit with a footprint measuring 11-1/2″ x 11-1/2″ and a total height of 7-1/2″ from the bottom of the cabinet to the top of the cover when closed and 16-1/2″ when open.

Heathkit AA-21D Stereo Germanium Solid-State Amplifier – Fully Restored, Excellent Working Condition. This Heathkit AA-21D stereo germanium solid-state amplifier is an increasingly rare piece of vintage audio history-especially in this condition. A great opportunity to add a properly restored classic to a serious vintage audio collection. The amplifier has been completely restored internally and is in 100% working order. All electrolytic capacitors replaced with modern, high-quality audio-grade units. All carbon composition resistors replaced with modern metal-film resistors. Output power transistors replaced with a matched set of New Old Stock (NOS) germanium devices. Original germanium transistors are now quite rare and often noisy; this matched set performs exceptionally well. Original power cord replaced with a modern 3-prong grounded cord for improved safety. Current limiter installed to reduce wear on the main power switch. Dial and indicator lamps replaced. All controls, switches, and potentiometers cleaned for quiet, noise-free operation. The unit has been thoroughly cleaned but does show honest signs of age. Cabinet is structurally solid. Scratches and visible cosmetic wear are present (please see photos for details). Here’s a really cool tube amplifier. It has mic (or guitar) level input and also line-level input. The phono-plug mic-level input has sensitivity 0.02 V for full output and the RCA line-level input has sensitivity 0.3 V for full output. A two way speaker system in the front which sounds awesome and is really fantastic with a vintage microphone. There’s certainly some potential here for a busking guitar amp or a harmonica amp. All the electrolytics were replaced with F&T or other high quality replacements, Coupling capacitors were replaced as well. No more leaky drifting wax caps. They are well testing vintage tubes. A 6X4 Rectifier, 6V6 Power tube and 12AX7. It operates without issues. Its been brought up to electrical safety standard with a grounded AC cable and a fuse holder was added. These were not fused from the factory. It’s sure to leave you with a repair bill soon after.

Here we have a Grundig NF-2 Stereo Tube power amp in good working condition. Pair of EL84′s per side, around 15Wrms per channel. Includes speaker connector and harness. Excellent bass response from the high quality output transformers. Full power measured response 40-15Khz +/-1dB. The amplifier has been rebuilt. The original AC connector was replaced with a fused IEC inlet. Also the main filter cap was replaced and some leaking coupling caps also replaced. RCA input jacks also added to top of chassis for convenient hookup. The amplifier is in good operational condition, ready to go into service. Sovtek EL84′s and JJ 12ax7 are currently installed.

Eico HF-81 Vintage Integrated Tube Amplifier – Fully Rebuilt. General: The Eico HF-81 is a classic example of an excellent sounding 1960′s integrated tube amplifier. This vintage beauty has a full tube preamp and power amp delivering up to 14W of warm tube power. This is a rather rare combination for an integrated amp, as most are a hybrid designs with a solid state preamp a tube amp (or vice-versa) like the McIntosh MA230, MAC1500, etc. We were truly impressed at the sound quality of this piece during long-term testing on our test rig. In particular we thought vocals sounded fantastic, especially period correct Elvis and Sinatra. This particular HF-81 was completely overhauled before arriving into our shop and performed excellent in all of our bench and long-term listing tests. This HF-81 will come to you with a reprinted manual and a custom made dust cover. SkyFi Cosmetic Notes: This piece received a cosmetic overhaul at some point in the past. All chassis parts were repainted. The transformers were painted as well. It also appears as though all new hardware was installed. The manual is a reprinted copy. No silkscreen in present on the rear panel, but we’ll provide a printed diagram with all of the input labels and tube locations. SkyFi Technical Notes: This unit came to us having already undergone an extensive electronic restoration. Here is a rough outline of what we picked up on during our testing and review process. This unit was fully recapped including a new CE multi-section can, axial electrolytics, a mix of film and PIO coupling caps, and select mica capacitors. Select resistors replaced, modern three prong power cord added, SEP/COM Switch removed from circuit, a power switch was added to the rear panel, and a phono grounding lug was installed. Tube Notes: The rectifier tubes are current production Electro Harmonix. The output tubes are Groove Tubes EL84, the 12AX7s are a mix of Sovtek and GE, the 12AU7s are Sylvania. Both channels tested clean to about 9W into 8 ohms, both channels driven. The only electronic issue that we identified was a channel imbalance in the volume control. We opted to replace the volume control with an Alps “Blue Velvet” control. The channel balance of the volume control is now excellent. Slight drift in the balance control, however, results in the need for the balance control to be shifted just slightly to the left of center for ideal performance. IM distortion (60 Hz and 6 kHz at 4:1): 2% at 14 W, 0.05% at 5 W. Sensitivity (input for 14 W): Moving Magnet Phono 4mV Tape head 2mV Mic 5mV Aux and Tuners 500mV. Speaker Connections: 4, 8, 16, 32 ohms. Dimensions: 15″ (385mm) W 4-3/4″ (120mm) H 10-1/2 (270mm) D Weight: 24 lbs. Testing Process: We start with a visual inspection of all internal components to make sure that there are no signs of heat stress or damage. Capacitors are checked for telltale signs of predictive failure including bulging, shrunken wrappers, or physical leakage. We also inspect resistors and other passive components for signs of overheating. If tube arcing has occurred in the past we can usually spot discoloration on the output tube sockets. On vintage units we often spot check select capacitors for value and ESR. If the amplifier passes visual inspection, we move on to a full test of all of the tubes. We use a modern Amplitrex AT-1000 Professional Tube Tester which is capable of testing both emission and Gm with a high degree of accuracy. We document the results of each tube and replace any weak or suspect tubes before proceeding. When we power on tube amplifiers for the first time we usually use a variac and current limited AC supply and slowly raise the voltage up to nominal mains level while monitoring plate, screen, filament, and negative bias supply voltages where applicable. If everything is in order we feed a low level test signal into the amplifier’s input and monitor its output on an oscilloscope across an 8 ohm dummy load. At this point we are just looking to verify basic function and confirm that the output transformers are not damaged. Once we have verified that the amplifier is safe to operate, we connected it to full mains power. For cathode biased amps we monitor the plate to cathode voltage to determine if the output tubes are operating in a safe range. Once the output section is verified we move onto bench evaluation. We start by feeding the input of the amplifier with a low level 1 KHz test signal, slowly increasing its amplitude while monitoring the amplifier’s output on an oscilloscope for signs of noise, clipping, distortion, or improper channel balance. We continue increasing the signal level until the amplifier reaches clipping. At this point we take an output power measurement and compare it to the spec sheet of the amplifier to verify proper performance. We finish off the bench evaluation with a 1 KHz square wave check and a 20 Hz to 20 KHz sine sweep to assess the amplifier’s frequency response characteristics. This battery of tests will usually reveal if the amplifier has any issues that need further attention. Before the device leaves the bench we perform a listening test with actual music using a variety of preferred test tracks. Our benches are outfitted with familiar monitor speakers which help us identify inconsistencies that will not always show up on our test gear. The main things that we are listening for are hum or noise with no signal present, proper center image, clicks, pops, or any other obvious undesirable audio characteristics. If the unit passes all of these tests it is moved to our long term testing rig where we simulate real word operating conditions for 6-8 hours minimum. For tube amps we like to run this test at least twice. This allows us to monitor the unit for signs of thermal runaway or intermittent issues that only crop up when it has fully come up to temperature. We find this step to be essential, especially for vintage units. Please note we are not a repair shop and only restore what we own. SkyFi Audio – Curators of Vintage Audio Gear.
