This is the Oahu 230K Two-Tone Lap Steel Electric Guitar Tube Amplifier. The Oahu amplifiers gained a large following after it was discovered that Keith Richards was using them in the studio. This amplifier features a 12 watt all tube design. There are 3 inputs- 2 guitar and a microphone in. The tube design, combined with the low wattage makes for a great amp to push into natural overdrive. This Oahu is on the warmer side enabling a great full sound. This tone runs to the original Rola 10 speaker- the speaker dates to 1947 or 1957. The look here is gorgeous- Black/Cream two-tone aesthetic. This amp is in good overall condition- typical marks you expect on a 60+ year old example, static in pots, the exterior on the power cord is cracking, and the handle is missing some plastic (pics). Up for sale, a 1951 Oahu Chicago Model 51, recently serviced and ready for stage and studio use. This early Oahu amp was manufactured in Chicago by the parent company, Valco, who made amps under the National, Supro, and Gretsch brands, among others. Powered by a pair of 6V6 tubes and voiced through a modern Jensen 10″ alnico speaker, there’s a midrange richness and detail to the breakup of these amps that is signature “Valco tone. The bloom, light compression, and creamy nature of the sound reacts well with a variety of guitar pickups and makes this amp a perfect secret weapon for studio sessions, and it really shines with a microphone in front of it. The circuit has been thoroughly serviced by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, with new Mallory caps in the preamp where necessary, Sprague Atom filter caps, and a new three-prong power cable. The original Stackpole pots are intact, along with the original transformers. Mounted to the back panel, an external speaker jack has been installed, with an on/off switch to engage or disengage the internal speaker as needed. In addition to the new Jensen speaker, the original Rola speaker is also included. The amp retains the majority of the original white covering, with the exception of the bottom and left side of the enclosure. The black segmented grillcloth is intact and the metal “Oahu” badge is present, along with the original molded handle.
