Here’s a 1954 Fender Deluxe 5C3 Wide Panel amplifier in its aged lacquered tweed covering. This is a player-grade vintage Deluxe rather than an untouched collector example, and I want to be very clear about the changes and service history. It has lived a long musical life, has been maintained over the years, and remains a fully functional vintage Fender that can actually be played and enjoyed. The amp is approximately 10 watts through a single 12 speaker and has the focused midrange, compression, and dynamic response that made these early Tweed Deluxes so distinctive. What’s Original / What’s Changed. The cabinet retains its aged lacquered tweed covering, which presents remarkably well for an amplifier more than 70 years old. The original speaker has been replaced with a vintage 1970s Eminence 12 speaker. The original output transformer has also been replaced with a Midwest transformer. The previous owner was told by another knowledgeable vintage-amp enthusiast that its markings may indicate either 1957 or 1967. I have not independently confirmed the exact transformer date, so I’m passing that information along as part of the amp’s history rather than presenting it as established fact. The amplifier has also received normal service over the years, including. Replacement electrolytic capacitors. Some replaced resistors. Grounded three-prong power cord. Replacement leather carrying handle. Pots cleaned and serviced. An aluminum shielding layer is present inside the cabinet. The previous owner investigated this after questions were raised about the cabinet covering and reported finding the earlier insulating material beneath the aluminum. I have left this assembly undisturbed. The amplifier largely follows the Fender 5C3 circuit. I would describe the amp as Very Good vintage condition. The tweed shows the discoloration, wear, and surface character you would expect from an actual 1954 amplifier, but the cabinet presents very nicely overall. This is not being represented as collector-original. The replacement speaker, replacement output transformer, electronic service, power-cord upgrade, and replacement handle are all disclosed above. Most importantly, the amp is functional and ready to be played. I think the best way to look at this one is as a genuine player-grade 1954 Tweed Deluxe: an authentic early Fender that has experienced the repairs and maintenance necessary to keep it working over more than seven decades. 5C3 Wide Panel circuit era. Pushing the amp past around 5 on the Volume dial of either channel coaxes shades of overdrive out of the circuit, with moderate compression and plenty of crunch and bite when diming the amp out. Perfect for guitar or bass, this amp is also an excellent pedal platform. The circuit is very original with stock Schumacher transformers (Fender’s primary transformer supplier in the Black Panel years) dating between 1964 and’65. The power amp has been professionally recapped, and the preamp has new electrolytic caps as well, ensuring reliable performance. The preamp retains a number of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps that are an essential part of the Black Panel era’s sweet, musical character, and a few Sprague Orange Drops have also been installed. The CTS and Stackpole pots have visible date codes that span late 1964 and early’65. The power cable has been upgraded to a modern three-prong variety. The tube complement includes a pair of matched Ruby 6L6s, with a Mojotone-branded phase inverter and three original RCA-branded preamp tubes. A nearly dead stock and minimally serviced example with a full vintage tube set, this Twin’s condition is all the more uncommon given its size. While Fender’s smaller combos of the era can occasionally be found in pristine shape, it’s significantly rarer to find Fender’s gig-worthy large combos (which generally saw much rougher usage) as well-kept as this example. All of the original Schumacher-made transformers are intact, with date codes spanning mid-1966 to early’67. The original CTS pots have visible date codes from the 38th week of’66. The amp has a single new electrolytic capacitor in the preamp along with a new bias capacitor. Even the stock power supply caps are still intact and viable. The power tubes comprise three Sylvanias and a closely matched Fender-branded 6L6 with the same construction. The preamp features RCA, Amperex and GE-branded valves. The speakers are the original pair of Fender-branded Jensen C12Ns with clean black frames. The most popular (and relatively uncommon) vintage speaker option offered in the Black Panel era Twin, these Jensens offer excellent headroom, clarity and detail. The tube chart is clean and fully intact, with an “QD” date stamp that translates to April of 1967. The original black tolex is exceptionally clean, and the silver sparkle grillcloth shows minimal wear and modest darkening. The faceplate is notably well-kept, retaining a full complement of original witch hat knobs. All of the original hardware is present, including the chrome tilt back legs, nickel corners, sphinx glides, handle, and raised Fender logo on the amp’s face. The original two-button footswitch is included, along with the original Victoria Luggage-branded slip cover and the factory paperwork comprising the full color Fender catalog and a pair of schematics.

For sale is a Fender Bassman Head from April of 1965. The black front panel reads Fender Electric Instrument Company. This amp is from before the CBS takeover. The amp is in excellent condition for is age with a minimum of components changed. All original transformers dating from 1963 & 1965. It has a three prong powerchord and a mix of vintage RCA & GE preamp tubes and contemporary power tubes. The tube chart reads AA165. The amp is actually the AB165 circuit with more gain. Fender used old tube charts until they ran out. If you jump the both channels they are in phase which make it a AB165 circuit. Please see photos for condition and internal components.
