Vintage Tube Amp

Up for sale, a 1964 Ampeg B-12-XY recently serviced and in perfect working order. One of the physically larger and complex designs in the Portaflex series, the B-12-XY features both vibrato and reverb through a ported cabinet outfitted with a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. Stocked with a combination of original preamp valves and newer JJ power and rectifier tubes, the B-12-XY delivers a tone that has warmth, clarity and the rich overdrive characteristics commonly associated with Ampeg’s best designs. The physical size of the cabinet and ported design adds extra low end fullness, and the stock horn has been disconnected to provide a more conventional and smooth EQ curve. The vibrato (not tremolo like most amps), has a deep, warbling pulse with a swirling, leslie-like effect that is extremely lush. The reverb utilizes the original Accutronics two-spring tank, and curiously enough, is designed to only operate via a satellite cabinet, although the effect has been tested and sounds great. The circuit is clean and stock, with only a few minor component substitutions to keep the amp operating within original factory spec. The turret board design is clean and true to how the amp left the factory, with original transformers and CTS pots that date to late 1963. The chassis has plenty of shine with clean chrome plating that still retains the majority of the original white silkscreen lettering. Central to the face of the amp, the lucite, light-up “Ampeg” logo is present. Inside the cabinet, the original tube chart is mostly intact, and the modern Celestion Vintage 30 speaker offers a very smooth and pleasing voice that compliments the circuit design. Cosmetically, the original blue checkered covering and silver grillcloth are intact, showing scuffs and modest wear on the corners of the cab from the past 55 years. The original chrome side handles are present and clean, and the stock blue leather handle on the center of the cab shows wear, but still works, having been liberally wrapped in gaffe tape. The original multi-pin head to cabinet cable has also been substituted for a more convenient and versatile 1/4plug, and the six shockmounts that suspend the head above the mounting tray are all brand new components from Fliptops, ensuring no rotted out rubber and a secure connection between the head and mounting tray when transporting the amp. Overall, this amp is a complete and serviced road warrior, ready for another half century of use. Up for sale, a 1957 Magnatone Custom 213 Troubadour in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. A first year example of the Troubadour model, this Custom 213 is fresh back from our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with a clean bill of health. One of the cooler and less common mid-size Magna Electric-era Magnatone amps, the 213 boasts a single 12 alnico Oxford speaker and is powered by a matched pair of 6V6s, delivering 18 all tube watts. Whether you’re looking for the perfect surfy hollow twang or surprisingly thick overdrive, this Magnatone easily supplies a range of classic tube driven textures. Of course one of the main draws of any Magnatone is the true pitch vibrato, and with a width and warble unequalled in tube amp design, this vibrato circuit is in a word lush. The circuit is virtually untouched, boasting original Schumacher transformers and all of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps. All of the original CTS pots are present as well, with dates from the latter half of 1957. Other date codes of note include the original Oxford 12K5 speaker which dates to the 51st week of 1957 and retains its original Magnatone foil sticker on the magnet bell. The faceplate is quite clean and complete with era correct Dakaware knobs. The original smooth brown leatherette covering is in remarkable shape, with some expected light wear around the edges and at the corners, but nothing untoward for a 60+ year old amp. The wheat grillcloth is similarly well kept, and the original Magnatone logo is present too. The back panel on the cab is not present. Up for sale, a 1963 Magnatone Custom M6 in excellent condition and in good working order. This Magnatone/Estey amp was produced only from mid 1963-64, and features the quintessential Magnatone sound and true pitch vibrato. This two channel amp delivers a dynamic and warm clean tone that quickly saturates into smooth tube overdrive as you turn up the volume dial. The varistor vibrato is the same design used in earlier top-tier Magnatone models and it has a dimension and depth that no other vibrato can match! Rated at roughly 25 watts with a pair of vintage Sylvania 7189 power tubes, this amp is voiced through a single Oxford 12 speaker. This M6 is a particularly clean example, with the short-lived yet very sturdy wood reinforced plastic cabinet. The steel chassis for the preamp is connected to the overbuilt amp handle, and the preamp is very tech friendly, point-to-point wired and accessible by removing only two bolts on either side of the chassis. Featuring original gold sparkle grillcloth and gold accents, the M6 is a real looker with a Magnatone “M” that lights up on the top of the amp when in operation. The circuit is very original, with stock CTS pots that date to late’61, the original blue molded Ajax tone caps and untouched solder joints. The transformers are original as well. The amp features a nice selection of vintage preamp tubes along with a matched pair of Sylvania 7189 power tubes (same pin out and similar tonal characteristics to an EL84, but able to generate higher plate voltages). The alnico Oxford 12K5 speaker is original, sound great, and dates to the 38th week of 1963. Cosmetically, this Magnatone is very clean. The faceplate shows some light wear and the gold caps on the knobs are missing, although all of the original knobs are intact. There is also a tiny amount of surface rust in a couple spots on the faceplate and a few scuffs on the cab, but as the photos show, there is no serious or structural wear of any kind.
