+++ CONN STEREO POWER AMPLIFIER 6L6 or 7027A or KT +++ VINTAGE USA TUBE AMP
Here is a fresh restoration, an early 1960′s all USA made Conn stereo HiFi amp with 30+ watts per channel, conservatively rated, much more available for peaks. Check the size of the enormous quality output transformers, bigger than Dyna ST70. And all desirable point to point wiring, no troublesome pc board. 20.5 inch total chassis length. Replaced electrolytic caps, including power supply filter caps, throughout with good Japan Nichicon and USA Vishay/Sprague brands, no cheapies. Original dipped coupling film caps remain as they were still working well, blocking B+ to the final stage input grids, and providing the original tone. Resistors were checked throughout the chassis and a few that had drifted out of spec were replaced. With the new filter caps the power supply now produces the proper and full 440Vdc B+. A simple one wire mod on each output tube socket was made so the amp can now use 6L6 or 7027A. Now one is able to roll 6L6 tubes affordably or stick with 7027A, your choice. The original 7027A were quite tired so a brand new factory matched quad of highly acclaimed EH 6L6GC output tubes was installed. The old 7199 input tubes were unbalanced and weak so I installed a NOS Hickok matched and balanced pair of Phillips 6U8 with the needed adapters. One may use 6GH8A in these adapters also. This amp has the power supply and output trannys to also handle KT88, KT90… Then the following were installed – new: heavy 5A on/off switch; 3 wire power cord with green chassis ground connected (other 2 wires soldered and shrink wrapped, no electrical tape); big gold speaker binding posts for fat wire or banana plug; gold RCA inputs; and finally four feet and decorative (stained poplar or tiger maple accents, there is a bit of a shimmer to it) vernier wood trim finely cut, furniture quality. Each channel has an attenuating potentiometer on top of the chassis that can be used for a volume control if you have no pre-amp and just want to plug in a cd player or other – works ok. Real nice cosmetics, not 100% perfect, but close – only very minor flaws. The disconnected silver can cap in the corner by itself has a cracked phenolic base so jiggles a tiny bit when pushed but is disconnected and replaced electrically so there is no danger, retained for looks. Hooked it to my recapped Jensen Tri-ette speakers and recapped Dyna PAS2 preamp and heard stunningly clear, smooth yet powerful sound with lots of impact. Next to no audible distortion even when turned up to higher power. Well defined sound stage too, rather striking actually with this Rush cd on right now. Use a 5 computer fan behind it blowing on the PT and OTs and the amp stays cool, only warm up front around the 6L6 bases – running well at 120Vac. And pleased to hear no hum, no buzz from either channel – it is dead quiet at idle. This amp is ready for many more years of service, will likely outlast us all, heavy duty USA quality. If ever any repair is needed it has simple circuitry that any competent repair men can fix it with little effort. No PC board makes it easy to work with, just follow the wire to the next component.
