1965 Fender Showman Vintage Blackface Piggyback Tube Amp, Tone Ring Cab JBL D140
Sunday, November 19th, 2017Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Showman in excellent condition, complete with the matching 1×15 “Tone Ring” piggyback speaker cabinet! The Showman was Fender’s flagship tube amp in’65, and the Blackface circuit delivers incredible clean power and headroom, with a sweet sounding, versatile preamp. This particular Showman boasts a fresh matched quad of Sovtek 6L6 power tubes and has just been given a clean bill of health from our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar. From full, tight bass to Fender sparkle and chime on the top end, this is an extremely tonally balanced amp, with plenty of mids on tap as well and strong tremolo. One very unique and desirable feature of the Showman is the ported Tone Ring speaker cabinet. This large 1×15 enclosure was designed to deliver the clearest, most pure Fender tone with a stock JBL D140F speaker, and as such utilizes a dual baffle board design in which the speaker floats between the baffles, mounted to a metal tone ring. This elegant design makes the Showman cab work as a closed back, ported enclosure and you’ll notice greater range of your EQ controls, ample bass response and an overall sweeter, balanced tone that you simply can’t get with any other Fender cabinet. Plus it just looks so darn impressive! The speaker cabinet retains all of its original fiberglass sound dampening sheets and the D140F sounds incredible with the original cone stamped 29675. The circuit retains all of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps that are a hallmark of the Blackface tone, and the amp is completely stock under the hood with the exception of a recap of the power supply and a modern three-prong power cable. All of the Schumacher transformers have 1965 date codes which match the codes on the chassis stamp, tube chart and CTS pots. The tube chart is complete and intact with a clear “OK” date stamp, which translates to November of 1965. This amp sports the original smooth black tolex which is in remarkable shape, showing only minor scuffs and light wear along a couple of the back edges on the cab. Both the head and cab have new silver sparkle grillcloth that has been lightly aged in-house. All of the hardware is intact as well including chrome pat. Pending tilt back legs, piggyback clip bars, handles, corners and raised metal Fender logos on both the head and speaker cabinet. There are a few tiny screw holes on the righthand side of the cab from where casters were once mounted to orient the cab vertically. This vintage Blackface Fender Showman is clean and complete. A testament to the enduring popularity, great tone and reliability of vintage Fender amps! Delivering 85 clean, all tube Fender watts through a JBL D140F, this amp is ideal for guitar, bass or your favorite Fender Rhodes or combo organ.
