Vintage Tube Amp

Up for sale, a 1951 Fender Pro, fully serviced and retaining the original tweed and transformers, complete with a vintage tube set. This was the very first iteration of this classic lacquered tweed “TV front” model, and this era Pro is perhaps best known as being the amp Buddy Holly recorded all of his hits on at the Norman Petty studio in New Mexico. The baffle and face of the cabinet have been altered (presumably to resemble the later “narrow panel” Tweed amps) with a more squared-off appearance and modified baffle mounting brackets. A very powerful and high fidelity amp in its day, the Pro pushed close to 40 sweet and dynamic tube watts through one 15 Jensen P15N alnico speaker. The early octal preamp tubes give these TV front amps a different tonal color than any later Fenders, as the octals have a more girthy midrange and a kind of warmth that can’t be achieved with the later dual triode (12AX7, etc) tubes Fender used from the mid-1950′s through the present day. Just like you’d expect with Buddy Holly’s cutting and robust rhythm sound, the Pro can give you primitive Fender cleans that chime and growl, with surprising headroom and a tone that overall really fills out the frequency spectrum when paired with Fender’s single coil pickups of the day. The circuit has been maintained faithful to original factory spec, with a full recap of the power supply with high quality Sprague Atom filter caps. The preamp has replaced caps as well, with replica white Astron sleeves on what appear to be genuine vintage blue Ajax capacitors (as Fender would use in their later Brown and Black Panel amps). The original trio of Stackpole pots have visible date codes from the 18th week of’51. The original Triad power transformer is intact, along with the stock output transformer mounted to the speaker frame. The amp has also been fitted with a modern three-prong power cable. The power tubes are a pair of properly-biased vintage USA-made RCA 6L6GCs, with a GE-branded 5U4 rectifier and trio of RCA 6SC7 preamp tubes. The chassis is in great overall condition, with only a light speckling of patina and the majority of the original white silkscreen text intact. All three original chicken head knobs are present too, along with a modern leather handle and original metal Fender logo on the face. The Jensen P15N speaker is stock, sporting a clean dark green frame and original Jensen foil label on the bell cover. The original tube chart is present as well and very clean with crisp corners and hand-inked serial number. The original low contrast diagonal tweed is intact, and the tweed is deeply ambered. The tweed covering is no longer present on the bottom of the cabinet, and the baffle has been regrilled with vintage-style oxblood/gold stripe cloth. As the cabinet’s face was altered from the TV front design to a more squared off appearance, the baffle is mounted to the cabinet by a number of L-shaped brackets.

Vintage 1963 Fender Champ 5F1 in perfect working condition. It has all the right markings as noted in the pictures, and from my research and comparing the stamps, this amp would be 1963. It shows it’s age, but it’s not beat up or tore up. It sounds great as noted in the video and pretty clean for it’s age. I bought it around 1984 and been hanging on to it all these years. I figure it’s time for someone else to enjoy it or for a collector to have it. I will package it with care and lots of love and cushion.

Up for sale, a 1959 Fender Bassman featuring the 5F6-A circuit, re-tweeded and loaded with a vintage quartet of Jensen P10P alnico magnet speakers. A professionally serviced example with a very original circuit, this Bassman boasts 45 all tube watts driven by a pair of Tung Sol 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes. And while the 5F6-A circuit was originally engineered for bass as the name would suggest, guitar players quickly gravitated to it for its muscle, headroom, and rich overdriven grit. It’s a pure, straightforward circuit, with individual Volume knobs for the two channels and a global Treble/Middle/Bass three band EQ, as well as a Presence knob. Bridging the two channels with a small 1/4 jumper allows for interactivity between the two Volume knobs for even thicker roar and sizzle. The circuit retains all of the original Triad and Schumacher-made transformers, and the original CTS pots have visible date codes from the 37th week of’59. The preamp retains all of the stock yellow Astron capacitors, and even a few of the smaller Minimite electrolytics are still viable. The power supply has been recapped with high quality Sprague Atoms, and new smaller Sprague electrolytic caps have been installed in the bias supply. The result is a Bassman that runs extremely reliably with a notably low noise floor, delivering all the power, grit, and nuance for which this circuit is known. A modern three-prong power cable has also been installed. The amp is loaded with four era-correct Jensen P10P alnico magnet drivers with dark blue frames, and these speakers offer more headroom and bass register kick than the smaller magnet P10Rs loaded in Bassmans from the factory. All four speakers have been freshly reconed, with date stamps on the edges of the frames from’61. The original tube chart is no longer present inside the cabinet. The original cabinet has been professionally re-tweeded, and the oxblood/gold stripe grillcloth is modern as well, matching vintage spec. The chrome-plated chassis retains the majority of the original white silkscreened text, and there is some lacquer overspray across the control plate. The amp boasts a full vintage set of black chicken head knobs, and the molded dogbone handle is a modern Fender replacement.

You are looking at a Harmony H205 amplifier. The original 12 in Rola speaker ein code dates it as either August of 1953 or 1963. These first appeared in the 1950′s, so I’m guessing 1953. The overall condition of the amplifier is very good considering the age. There are small scuffs here and there and the grill is somewhat faded. When I bought it a few years ago, I had the cord changed to a three prong, replaced the handle and replaced some capacitors. It has been played in my studio since then. It has two 6V6 tubes and puts out 10 to 15watts. It has 2 guitar inputs and a microphone input or for third guitar. There are 2 volume controls and a tone control that also turns the amp on and off. There is some 60 cycle hum with higher volume which is common in these amps. The amp has a nice overdriven tone when cranked. There is a schematic stapled to the inside of the amp. Check out this mid 50′s Magnatone Starlet amp that I hot rodded into a Fender narrow panel tweed champ! Originally the starlet is an ACDC amp with no power transformer. These typically sound kinda weak, SO I gutted the circuit and added a vintage new old stock stancor power transformer from the 50′s, kept the original speaker and output transformer and built a narrow panel 5f1 champ circuit inside! The results is a super hot rodded maggy! TONS of hot gain and sounds fantastic with every single guitar. Great for low output guitars too like a kay thin twin etc because it has so much gain! The video I made with les paul is only on 3! Grounded cable ALL new caps and resistors. Original cab is in fantastic shape and even has most the original waterslide decal on the front. I have never seen a starlet in this nice of shape. Lots of natural wear and tear. Original button alnico speaker that works great but I cannot promise how long it will uphold if you abuse the amp with pedals or put a metal guitar through it.
