Up for sale, a 1960 Magnatone Custom 280 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The 280 was the top of the line 200 series amplifier developed my Magna Electronics in the “Pre-Estey” days of the company, and this amp is often considered the pinnacle of golden era Magnatone design and tone. Both Buddy Holly and Neil Young are notable users of the Magnatone 280, and the rich overdrive and stereo vibrato are unlike anything you’ve ever heard on another tube amp. Complete with the a matched RCA power tube quad and tube set replete with all vintage USA-made valves, this circuit pushes a pair of stock Oxford 12L5N alnico speakers and a pair of 3 tweeters as well! Featuring two channels, point-to-point circuitry and dual output transformers for true stereo operation, the Magnatone 280 was ahead of its time, and an amp that cost a good 20% more in its day than the most expensive Fenders! The circuit is extremely original, with new filter caps to keep everything operating within original factory spec, and new caps in the crossover as well. The amp retains all of the original Ajax blue molded tone caps that are essential to the tonal sweetness of the amp and also the range of the EQ controls. The original output transformers date to 1957 and 1959 respectively, while power transformer dates to late’59 and the stock CTS pots date to the 44th week of 1959. Of course the hallmark of any Magnatone amp is its true stereo vibrato, and this amp delivers the classic effect with a depth and width that’s hard to believe. The pulse and warble of the vibrato is vibrant and lush, operating either in mono or stereo, bouncing between the two Oxford speakers. The 3 tweeters also do a great deal to accentuate the top end swirl of the vibrato, and these speakers were only available in the very last 280 amps. The Oxford 12L5N-1 speakers both have clean white/silver frames with early 1960 date codes. The small “Magnatone – High Fidelity” stickers are also intact on the horseshoe alnico magnets as well. The faceplate of the amp is surprisingly clean, given how lightly these were originally screen printed, and all of the text and graphics are present. The original white knobs are all present, and there are some small scuffs and hash marks on the faceplate denoting a previous owners favorite settings. Cosmetically, the cab is in great overall condition, especially given the fragile brown leatherette bindery cloth used to cover the cabinets and the squarish shape of the cabinet edges which were more susceptible to nicks and dings. Aside from the expected wear along the lower edges of the cab in particular, the amp is very presentable and complete with the gold Magnatone logo on the face and both’V’ badges. Up for sale, a 1960 Magnatone Custom 250 tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A rarity in any condition, this vintage Magnatone is 100% original aside from a couple capacitors swapped to keep everything operating within original factory spec. Even the tube set is a complete vintage compliment from the likes of RCA, General Electric, Amperex, and Sylvania. One of the cooler and less common mid-size Estey-era Magnatone amps, the 250 boasts a single 12 alnico Oxford 12L5N speaker powered by a pair of 6973 power tubes. The characteristics of the 6973 valve are similar to the more common EL84, with a smooth midrange character and dynamic breakup at higher volumes with perfect top end bite. Whether you’re looking for surfy hollow twang or surprisingly thick overdrive, this Magnatone easily supplies a range of classic tube driven textures. Magnatone’s legendary frequency modulated pitch shifting vibrato effect is present on the Custom 250, with a width and warble unequalled in tube amp design. This vibrato circuit is in one word “lush, ” and while it functions in mono inside the speaker cabinet, a 1/4 extension speaker jack allows the effect to bounce back and forth between two cabs if desired. The vibrato can be engaged via the included original “doorstop” footswitch. The point-to-point circuit boasts the original Schumacher transformers which date to the 34th and 36th weeks of 1960. The original blue molded Ajax capacitors in the preamp have a smooth and musical character, and are the same caps at the heart of Fender’s Blackface era circuits. Other date codes of note include CTS pots which date to the 31st week of’60 and the original Oxford 12L5N speaker which dates to the 40th week of 60. The faceplate is notably clean, with all of the stock knobs and graphics present. The original smooth brown leatherette covering is in remarkable shape, and while the corners show some customary light wear and scuffs, the amp presents very well. The brown and gold grillcloth is similarly clean, and the original Magnatone logo is intact with a slightly bent chevron wing. Up for sale, a 1947 Magnatone Troubadour model M-192-5 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. A very rare first year production model, this 1×12 tube amp is extremely original and has been thoroughly gone over by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar to ensure optimal playability. With a preamp driven by octal tubes, the amp has a complex, sweet, and harmonically rich tone that sounds very natural and dynamic. The amp lets the voice of your guitar’s pickups shine through and has a distinctly different response with every guitar that’s put in front of it. Single coils can sound jangly and clear, while P-90s and humbuckers can push the circuit into rich overdrive. The circuit retains the original generously-sized. Transformer which dates to the 2nd week of’47, and the original output transformer is intact too, mounted to the speaker frame. The circuit retains the original pots in the true point-to-point wired circuit, with new signal and filter caps as necessary to ensure optimal performance. The speaker is the original alnico magnet Rola with a clean silver frame and date stamp from the 4th week of’47. The speaker has been reconed in the amp’s lifetime, and new leads from the output transformer to the chassis were cleanly soldered to the original leads post-recone. The faceplate is remarkably clean with all of the original graphics as well as the trio of white chicken head knobs. The amp is stocked with a complete compliment of vintage tubes including a 5Y3 rectifier and matched RCA 6V6 power tubes. The cabinet is wrapped in the original lightly textured brown material, not dissimilar from the bindery cloth used on later Magnatone models. The original brown and gold grillcloth is in remarkable shape, and the amp even retains the original metal “MEC-Magna Electronics Co” logo on the amp’s face as well as the stock leather handle. There’s a bit of light scuffing and wear on the edges of the enclosure, yet for a Magnatone that’s practically a prototype, it’s sure to satisfy discerning collectors and studio players alike. Up for sale, a 1961 Magnatone Estey “Venus” Custom 480 vintage tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Fully serviced and extremely original with the original Oxford speaker and tweeter pair, this Magnatone is a studio-worthy example. Introduced as Magnatone’s flagship model to replace the earlier Magna Electric 280, the 480 adds tube driven spring reverb to the mix, the inclusion of which coincided with Magnatone’s sale to the Estey company. A true stereo amplifier featuring Magnatone’s legendary varistor powered true pitch vibrato, the Magnatone 480 sports two 12″ main drivers and a pair of 5×7″ midrange speakers as well for a very full and well-rounded tube tone. As the top of the line Magnatone amplifier, the 480 has one of the most complex true point-to-point hand wired circuit every conceived of for a tube amp, featuring thirteen tubes and one transistor. With all of the features on these Magnatones and a price point higher than the Fender Twin of the same era, very few were produced and even less show up on the market, let alone in perfect working order like the one offered here. The tone is just heavenly, with smooth tube breakup and two distinctly voiced channels, each with its own Loudness, Treble, and Bass controls. Add Magnatone’s distinctive sounding reverb on top of that swampy, thick vibrato and you’ve got a sound like no one else on your block. The circuit is freshly serviced, with a few new electrolytic caps as well as a few key swapped components in the preamp to ensure that everything is operating within factory spec. All of the original blue Ajax tone caps are intact in the preamp, and the CTS pots date to the 23rd week of 1961. The stock Schumacher power transformer dates to 1961, and the pair of output transformers have matching date codes from the 39th week of’61. The two primary speakers are the original Oxford 12L5N drivers with extremely clean frames and late’61 date codes. Which date to 1961. The two 5×7 midrange speakers (hidden by the chassis and not typically visible) are also original and still wired via the stock crossover. The cabinet retains the original brown textured bindery cloth, and this fragile covering is notably clean, with very limited wear on the edges of the enclosure. The original grillcloth has plenty of sparkle in the gold sparkle thread, and the original faceplace is nigh flawless with original silkscreen lettering. The faceplate retains a full compliment of stock knobs, and the two tone brown and gold faceplate is also in remarkable shape. The silkscreening is far thinner than Fender amps, so to find a 480 in this condition is quite uncommon in every respect. As Magnatone’s top of the line combo and an amp in production for less than two full years, this 480 is a studio and stage ready marvel, with the rich, three-dimensional vibrato and dynamic tone distinctive to this make and model. Up for sale, a 1962 Magnatone Giulietti S-9 vintage tube amplifier in exceptional, collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. Complete with the original footswitch, the S-9 is virtually identical to the 260 model, with a 2×12 speaker configuration and lush pitch shifting vibrato. Produced in the Magna Electrics era (pre-Estey), this Magnatone features two channels with individual Volume and EQ controls as well as a bright switch. Driven by a pair of Wing C Svetlana 6L6 power tubes, the amp has a rich, lush sound capable of delivering both articulate cleans and overdriven roar. Of course at the heart of any Magnatone is their varistor-based true pitch shifting vibrato circuit, which is thick and watery, with a Leslie-esque swirl and unequalled. As a top of the line Magnatone amplifier, the Giulietti S-9 has a complex true point-to-point hand wired circuit which has been recently serviced to sound its best, balancing originality and functionality. The circuit retains all of the original blue Ajax molded caps in the preamp and CTS pots that date to the 32nd week of 1962. All of the original Schumacher transformers are intact including a power transformer that dates to the 47th week of 1961 and an output transformer that dates to the 22nd week of 1962. The power tubes are a pair of Wing C Svetlana 6L6s which are properly biased and have plenty of life. The amp retains its original speakers, which are a pair of Oxford 12K5s that date to the 32nd week of 1962. The original black speckled covering is extremely clean with only a few small scuffs and light wear on the bottom corners of the cabinet, and the faceplate is remarkably well kept as well with vibrant silkscreened graphics and all of the original knobs. Recently serviced Magnatone 410 amplifier. The electrolytic capacitors were replaced but the can cap was kept in place for looks (new caps were installed in the chassis). The tone signal caps are original as well as the speaker and transformers – the amp sounds incredible and has a great overdrive when pushed. There is one replacement knob. There is a very collectible and amazing sounding 1960′s guitar amp that should only go up in value.
