Vintage Tube Amp

Sherwood Model S-5500 Stereo Tube Amplifier. To my knowledge, it is in original condition. I have not removed the bottom cover to examine wiring, etc. Nor have I removed the existing tubes to examine their condition.

Recapped, retubed and volume knob has been added on left side for easier tone access. Light wear as pictured. Original Sherwood tube amplifier, this is working but needs to be rebuilt due to age. Both channels work, but there is a hum noticeable when no music is playing. Two of the controls are noisy, all should get some Deoxit cleaner. The other two are Mullard. The (4) 7868 tubes are GE. Around the phono gain button, some of the paint was worn off and has been reapplied. Included is the cover for the amp, no picture was taken of it though. This amp is intended as a project amp for an experienced person, and not as a first time amp to be used without being serviced. Up for sale here is this vintage Sherwood S-5500 IV tube amplifier. This is in extremely nice condition, with very little wear. Just look at those nice clean RCA jacks! The face does have a bit of wear, and the knobs are a little dirty–I didn’t want to clean them and risk damaging them. The cover is in really nice shape too. This is complete, with all the tubes. The 7868s look like RCAs to me. I think the 12AX7s are all newer Russian tubes, except one, which is a 5751 for some reason, Sylvania I believe. This was partially restored by a previous owner, who swapped some coupling caps but doesn’t appear to have done any other circuit changes. I do not know if this was biased. While I was looking at it, I noticed that the big 750 ohm 7W power resistor was badly heated and was cracked, so I replaced it with a 680 ohm 10W resistor, which was the closest one I could find. I also reflowed the solder joints that hold the 7868s’ shield down–they had both cracked. This is tested and plays well and sounds good. It has a tiny bit of background noise when you turn the volume up ALL the way, but otherwise is nice and quiet, with no hums or buzzes. The can caps stay nice and cool, though obviously the back of the amp gets really hot from the output tubes. The tubes are untested but since this works I would assume they’re fine. This is currently working well and sounds good, but I would STRONGLY recommend that you fully recap/restore this before regular use. Once restored, this will be an incredible amplifier.
