Up for sale is a terrific little tube amplifier from the 1960′s with a 12 speaker by Univox…. This hard to find gem is worth every penny we are asking! It is a full tube amp…. The power tubes are 6BM8′s , which are typically used in hi-fi stereos. And you all know how good those can sound! What I really love about this amp is how it overdrives. It has no gain knob or control, just a master volume. So like many class A, single ended one channel amps, this guy gets dirtier as you turn the master volume up. And of course, like any very good tube amp, your sound cleans up with a twist of your guitar’s volume knob downward! But dime this thing and it comes up with a very smooth and pleasing sounding overdrive, just like a tube amp should! As a matter of fact, this amp sounds great throughout the whole master volume range! I have a modded Epiphone Valve Jr. Head that starts to get loose and lose it’s smoothness and tightness when you turn it up all the way…. The speaker is super old and I’m going to guess original to the amp. It looks like one of those old Utah speakers and/or those vintage Fender alnico speakers. If I was going to replace anything on this amp, that would be the only thing, as it is very old after all. Add to all this that the amp has on-board tremolo! Man, this aspect of the amp sounds so good, it alone is worth the price of admission! It has such a huge and use-able range. You can go from really subtle / barely there when it’s engaged and turned down low. All the way to crazy fast tremolo mayhem when turned up all the way! Just an amazing feature that I love on these older tube amps! This amp has been serviced every year by one of the best, if not THE best amp tech in the Metro Charlotte, NC area. No scratchiness in the pots or wierd-ness in the sound. Tubes are fairly new so the amp is at full power and it sounds like it is! Tremolo has no issues and works perfectly! Sounds great on rhythm or lead guitar too, even with my novice abilities. The more I play it, the more I want to keep it. I only hooked up an Xotic RC Booster and an EHX Cathedral pedal to it in the last few months with a cheap strat copy and I’m still in disbelief of the tones I was getting, I didn’t want to stop playing. It was very inspiring. On with the listing. I’m guessing whoever replaced the power cord forgot to put the plastic shroud on the fan but it doesn’t affect it working properly and is included. I’ve misplaced the screws for the back over the years but have found some that do the job nicely. Has new knobs on the front. Tested everything but the external amp and external speaker jacks and seems to be working great. I’ve never had any issues with it so far. Hasn’t been used much in the last 8-9 years but has been stored in my pet and smoke free home just mostly collecting dust as you can see from the pics. Sounds awesome although it looks rough. 6550 tubes glow nice and I think have plenty of life left. Has the appropriate 10 amp fuse which has never blown. Looks like the original schematic is tucked away inside the head. The power cord is old and worn and should probably be replaced. Wonderful, estate fresh pair, original condition. Highly regarded Karlson design cabinets in solid pine (you could veneer or paint them, doesn’t look like a major project). Early, made in NY, University 6303 15 Diffaxial 3 way drivers and tone control. Other than missing one control knob, complete, excellent vintage condition, but did notice a couple cuts, they’ll need a fresh set of cables. Easily driven with tube amplifiers. Put them up against Altec, JBL, Klipsch, etc from the golden era. Recently picked up a nice NAD set up with a CD and a 533 Turntable, wanted to test them, these speakers were nearby. Up for sale, a 1960 Gretsch Electromatic Twin Model 6161 amplifier in excellent condition and in good working order. Virtually identical to the famed Gretsch “Roundup” amplifier and the National branded “Trem-o-Tone” except for the cosmetics, this USA-made Gretsch amp was produced, like every vintage Gretsch amp, by the Valco company in Chicago (home of Supro, National, Airline and more). For sweet tube saturated overdrive, you simply can’t beat these early Valco circuits. Tube rectified with a pair of 6973 power tubes and approximate 15 watt output, the preamp has a focused, midrange rich quality that is articulate, dynamic and just plain fun to play. With dual 6×11″ speakers and an original tweeter, the voicing is different than any amp with a standard 10″ or 12 speaker compliment and this amp is the perfect secret weapon for you studio! The circuit is a true representation of point-to-point wiring, with original solder joints and a partial recap to keep the amp running within original factory spec. The circuit is otherwise stock and untouched, with 6973 power tubes, paired with a trio of 12AX7 preamp tubes. The Rola 6×11 speakers sound great with their original cones and have clean’60 date stamps on the frames. The power cable has been upgraded to the modern three-prong variety. The original deep navy blue covering on the cabinet is in great shape, with stock white piping and even the original “Gretsch” logo still on the grillcloth. The small Valco serial number plaque is present, along with only light aging on the control panel and original knobs.
