Up for sale, a 1960 Magnatone Custom 250 tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A rarity in any condition, this vintage Magnatone is 100% original aside from a couple capacitors swapped to keep everything operating within original factory spec. Even the tube set is a complete vintage compliment from the likes of RCA, General Electric, Amperex, and Sylvania. One of the cooler and less common mid-size Estey-era Magnatone amps, the 250 boasts a single 12 alnico Oxford 12L5N speaker powered by a pair of 6973 power tubes. The characteristics of the 6973 valve are similar to the more common EL84, with a smooth midrange character and dynamic breakup at higher volumes with perfect top end bite. Whether you’re looking for surfy hollow twang or surprisingly thick overdrive, this Magnatone easily supplies a range of classic tube driven textures. Magnatone’s legendary frequency modulated pitch shifting vibrato effect is present on the Custom 250, with a width and warble unequalled in tube amp design. This vibrato circuit is in one word “lush, ” and while it functions in mono inside the speaker cabinet, a 1/4 extension speaker jack allows the effect to bounce back and forth between two cabs if desired. The vibrato can be engaged via the included original “doorstop” footswitch. The point-to-point circuit boasts the original Schumacher transformers which date to the 34th and 36th weeks of 1960. The original blue molded Ajax capacitors in the preamp have a smooth and musical character, and are the same caps at the heart of Fender’s Blackface era circuits. Other date codes of note include CTS pots which date to the 31st week of’60 and the original Oxford 12L5N speaker which dates to the 40th week of 60. The faceplate is notably clean, with all of the stock knobs and graphics present. The original smooth brown leatherette covering is in remarkable shape, and while the corners show some customary light wear and scuffs, the amp presents very well. The brown and gold grillcloth is similarly clean, and the original Magnatone logo is intact with a slightly bent chevron wing. I have for you a genuine ESTATE item… Please note the photographs. Marantz Model 8 Stereo Power Amplifier. Two-channel/stereo vacuum tube amplifier, 30 watts per channel, Serial No. 1954, built by the original (Saul) Marantz Company, Long Island City, New York. Based-on what Ive been able to find out. Essentially this Model 8 is two Model 5s on the same chassis. From the estate of the original owner, who, incidentally, was the son of a McIntosh executive; this unit was found alongside another Marantz tube amplifier, a Model 5, in a New Jersey estate. This Model 8 was subsequently taken to noted Marantz authority/repairer Bristol Electronics where it was vetted, tested, evaluated and sympathetically gone-over in general. It was brought-up very slowly on a Variac for 8 to 10 hours. Tubes were checked, tube pins and the bias tests switch were cleaned. RCA jacks were tightened, adjusted, etc, etc. Overall it was tested and gone-through to a point. A set of four (4) rubber feet were replaced (now black). 2 1/2A Slo Blo Fuse replaced. A used, nicely matched EL34 Tube fitted. Replaced original parts (the old brown broken feet and fuse, etc) were kept and will accompany the unit for the sake of originality. While this unit has been tested and works, there are some items that were recommended. A new selenium rectifier, possibly of modern-type silicon diode variety; and a new rubber power cord, of the same style, should be fitted if you intend to use this piece and expect top performance, to the best of its potential. This Model 8 is a testament for what it is. A nice, original American tube amplifier thats highly sought after today. Its for the collector, is the better part of 60 years old and should be looked-at and used as such unless youre full aware of how to care for, tune and restore/enjoy these precision units. This amplifier looks pretty good. The faceplate looks great with practically no wear, and the cabinet looks good with only a few scuffs and a bit of white paint on the top above the transformer (see photos). The chassis is a little dirty, but would clean up well. All controls turn smoothly. This will make an excellent candidate for a electronic restoration! For sale: one vintage Altec 129A tube amplifier. This amplifier features Peerless input, output and power transformers: models 4665, 16441 and 6302, respectively. The 4665 input transformer (a K-241D mounted on an octal tube base) in particular is highly sought after, considered a “holy grail” among vintage audio transformers. The amplifier itself is in so-so condition. A few wires inside the chassis have been cut, volume knob is frozen in place, lamp missing, etc. The transformers all test good, however, no shorts. The plastic key on the 4665 transformer octal base is broken, but still visible to ensure proper orientation. Amplifier was briefly powered on and tested for operating voltages, B+ and filament voltages successfully detected. No further testing was performed.
