Vintage Tube Amp

This is an MRA5-L6 tube amplifier. These were HiFi amplifiers (Ultra-linear type) which came out of Seeburg Juke boxes in the USA from the 1950′s era. This one was re-tasked in the past to be a Guitar practice Amp in the USA, but it is just as readily a mono HiFi amp. The oddity about these is that their power transformer never had the facility to run the tube filaments, these were powered by a separate transformer in the Juke box. However this amplifier has had its power transformer replaced in the past with an American unit which does run the tube filaments. But it makes it a 115V line powered amplifier, fine for the USA but to run it here in AU you would need a 230v/115v step-down transformer from Jaycar. The type that passes the Earth through, so the chassis remains Earthed. Other interesting features, the amplifier has an optional automatic volume control, this was to level the volume of many different songs from 45 RPM records. The amp has had some parts replaced in the past, currently it has a good set of electrolytic capacitors. I powered it and played my guitar through it, it works with good sound output. It may require some future repairs, for example I can see that there are a few original capacitors that have not been replaced yet. Tube amplifiers, such as this, or any Tube guitar amplifier, have very high voltages inside, at least 400V as well as the line voltage and are dangerous. There is nothing dangerous on the top, electrically at least, though the tubes get quite hot. And as noted above, the chassis should be earthed.

Vintage Harmony Model H 400 tube guitar amplifier “TESTED & WORKING”. Here is one very good. Harmony Model H 400 3 watt tube guitar amplifier. Is complete and in ready to use condition! It is quiet (no hum). All tubes have been tested for shorts, emissions and grid leakage and all test very well. The cabinet is in good condition with very few cabinet blemishes and no major tears, the grill cloth is in good original condition! . The carry handle is also in very nice condition as shown! The whole unit seems all original with no modifications. It was missing the volume knob so I added one that fit. I have also cleaned the volume control which delivered noise free use at the time of testing! Take a really good look at the pictures and ask any questions you may have. It performs best when each channel has its own rectifier tube. The lifespan of the tube is directly related to how hard the tube is operated to its maximum specifications. If used within its design parameters, it will be a super reliable tube, much like vintage 5U4 tubes have proven to be. Now that I have about ten hours of playing time on them, I’m confident in saying that they are exactly what I was hoping for. The Sophia blue glass 5U4G tubes are now in my Cary SLI-80 integrated amp featuring all factory upgrades. They replace nos RCA 5U4G rectifier tubes. When I need additional tubes, I will think of Sophia first. I’m using it it in the power stage of my Woo Audio headphone amp, and out of the box it sounds truly amazing. Currently, I have a quad of Sophia Electric EL 34s in my tube amp, your rectifier tubes in my preamp and headphone amp, and a 6SN7 in the preamp. I also have the incredible Magik Box.

Excellent sounding vintage tube amp. Has built in reverb and tremolo. 12″ speaker and 8″ speaker. Has input for foot switch but switch broke. All vintage, all original parts. Has wear and tear from use, but otherwise in good condition.
