Up for sale, a 1968 Sunn 2000s vintage tube bass amplifier head paired with a Sunn 2×15 speaker cabinet in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The brainchild of Norm Sundholm, bass player for the Kingsmen, and his brother Conrad, the Sunn company was birthed out of the need for gear that reproduced powerful, rich clean tones that could compete on the world’s largest stages (not the least of which was Woodstock, where Sunn supplied the backline). The Sunn 2000S led that charge in the bass world, and the hi-fi clarity and sweet warmth of this all tube bass head is oft-copied but rarely replicated. With absolutely massive transformers and a dual rectified four 6550 powered circuit, this 2000S head powers a vintage Sunn 2×15 speaker cabinet with a pair of Gauss drivers. These highly efficient and powerful speakers do a great job of amplifying that signature Sunn sound, and the thick, clear low end reproduced by these speakers is a known quantity in the bass world. The list of Sunn bass amp users is prolific and includes Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, and Noel Redding. This 2000s head has been recently serviced, with a complete and professional recap of the power supply, as well as a modern three-prong power cable. The power tubes are a fresh quad of Tung Sol 6550s which been properly biased for optimal headroom and life. The rest of the tube compliment consists of a pair of NOS 5V4 rectifiers and dual triodes from the likes of Amperex and General Electric. The original CTS pots and pair of chokes have date codes from early 1968, and both transformers are made by Dynaco. While the output transformer is the more conventional Dynaco style seen in Sunn amps, the power transformer is an arguably earlier example that could very well be original as well, although the cosmetic differences between the two transformers are notable. Regardless, the 2000s is designed to be powered by Dynaco iron, and these transformers sound incredible. The speaker cab was produced a few years later than the head, with a slightly different style of original grillcloth, although it pairs very well with the head and features the same rough, dark gray tolex. This is the later iteration of the 200s cab, with the larger side port and front mounted speakers. Both the head and cabinet retain their original hardware including handles, corners, and casters. Cosmetically, both head and cabinet have been thoroughly cleaned, with only light scuffs and nicks on the two enclosures, and moderate aging of the grillcloth. The original metal Sunn logos are both present as well. This stack is massive, classic, and ready to head back out on the road or find a home in the studio! These Mark III’s have just been completely gone through and had numerous updates to improve reliability, but these amps have not had any audio path mods, hacks, or “hot rods”, and remain true to the original Dynaco sound and character. The Quad caps are brand new, replaced with the upgraded versions from Dynakit, The coupling caps and bias caps were replaced. The old selenium rectifiers were updated with modern parts for better reliability. The rectifier circuits have had updates to extend the life of the rectifier tubes. The input jacks were replaced with new jacks and the old screw terminals were upgraded to binding posts. These amps have also been upgraded with bias balance controls. This update allows the bias to be setup properly for each tube and eliminates the need to have perfectly matched output tubes, allowing for greater flexibility if you want to experiment with different tubes. Amps come with: New 5AR4 Shuguang rectifier tubes (arguably the best new rectifier available today). 1 amp has a vintage National 6AN8 and the other a Dynaco branded 6AN8. The output tubes in both amps are vintage RCA 6550′s. They sound, and work, great. Cosmetics are very nice, I would say above average. There is some small pitting on the chrome chassis of both units, but overall the chrome still looks very good and has a nice shine. The cages look great. The cages are included, so is the original manual. I have the original “Black Cat” coupling caps I will include if you want them. I was aware that this is a sought after tube amplifier when I acquired it, but I had no way to use it with my system or test its working condition. I requested a technician test it and fix anything that needed fixing! The list of repairs made by the technician are as follows: The Stereo / Mono switch was not working so it was hard wired Stereo. Rectifier tube was replaced by a SOVTEK GZ34. 5408 1000V-4A pretection diodes added to tube rectifier socket. Four EL34s were replaced with JJ E34Ls. Two EL34 cathode resistors were replaced with Dynakit 1% 15.6 ohm resistors. If you require additional technical information about this amplifier, feel free to ask. This is a Great Vintage Pair of Dynakit Mono Tube Amplifiers. They both have upgraded power supplies and Bias. They have 4 KT-88 Tubes, 2 are Mullard and 2 are International, 2 Mullard GZ34 marked made in Great Britain, 1 is marked clearly 1 is not and 2 Heathkit 6AN8A, they all tested strong.
