Vintage 1961 Magnavox 8103 Dual Tube Amp Stereo Amplifier Project Great. The amp is completely original and is over 50 years old. There is some rust that I cleanded lightly as well. Other than that every thing is sound and all vacuum tubes light. I was able to jumper the power to test the amp. I was able to hear music out of both sides of the low frequency amp. The sound indicates its time for new coupling capacitors and probably most of the other capacitor for top rate sound. This amp will require modification to play directly from a wall outlet. The circuit will need to be checked and caps and resistors replaced as needed. They are great amps after being refurbished. That is why this is being called a project. Magnavox amps are easy to access and refurbish. There is a lot of information on line and Magnavox amps sound great after refurbishment. The amp is really two separate amp sections, a low amp and high amp. The lower-end stereo amp uses four 6V6 power tubes, two per side, in push pull configuration. Each side is 12 to 15 watts into 4 speaker loads. The higher end amp uses two 6V6 power tubes, one per side, in a single-ended amp arrangement. The load is around 3W into 16 Magnavox tweeters. This amp uses 11 vintage tubes. All tubes are branded Magnavox, and are original to the amp. They have not been tested. This is Vintage Stereo Magnavox tube amplifier. What you need to do is just Plug & Play and enjoy it! The out put tubes uses 2 x 6BQ5 for stereo and preamp tube uses 12AX7. Its sound is very sweet. As you can see, it is very nice tube amplifier. Original Magnavox logo was attached. 2 output tubes 6BQ5/EL84 are RCA brand. Please see the last photos. Please note that this is about 50 year old amp so nothing is guaranteed. It may be changed for recap, resistors, tubes, wires…. Inputs and outputs terminals are added for convenience. I have had these two Magnavox 138 mono-block amps for years. The output of each amp is 10 watts and the output impedance is 4 ohms. A few years ago, I refurbished the amps and painted the chassis. The amps are dead quiet and sound great. A preamp is highly recommended for volume and tone control. There are some scratches in the paint. Heres what I did when I refurbished the amp. I replaced the coupling caps with Mallory and Sprague capacitors. I replaced out of tolerance resistors. I added a grounded power cord, a 2 amp slo blo fuse, an on/off switch, an on/off lamp, three-way speaker connections for either bare wire, spade ends or banana plugs and rubber feet. The filter can capacitor is still original to the amp and is still dead quiet as mentioned. The chassis are slightly different model 138 amps. But both amps use the same tube configuration, one 5Y3GT, two 6V6GT power tubes and a 12AX7 preamp tube. One amp has a Hytron 5Y3GT, two RCA smoked black plate tubes and an Audio Research 12AX7. The other has a GE 5Y3GT, one RCA smoked black plate and one Sylvania smoked 6V6GT power tubes and an RCA 12AX7. All from the golden age of tubes from the mid-century era. All were made in the US except maybe the Audio Research 12AX7/ECC83. More in other locations. Even the multi-section electrolytic filter capacitor (the tubular aluminum can visible on top of chassis) is brand new. This console Maggie has been modified to be a stand alone, fully integrated audio amplifier. It not only includes the original 9302 power amp, but the original Magnavox pre-amp as well, with all the associated controls, including volume. It has been thoroughly tested to ensure that all operating parameters are within proper specifications. All tubes are either brand new, or new old stock (NOS) and test accordingly. As is usually the case, the console’s pre-amp and tone controls (including the volume), were located inside the tuner chassis, not the amplifier chassis. Nlike most typical console amplifier restorations, this 9302 has been reunited with it’s matching pre-amp circuit formally located in the tuner. Since the original Maggie 9302 chassis is oversized and already had an empty tube socket hole labeled “6EU7″ (for use in other equipment that Magnavox manufactured), the extra pre-amp tube, controls and circuitry, were easily accommodated. It’s all “under the hood” of this now fully integrated, high fidelity, stereo tube amplifier. This beautiful Maggie is plug and play and ready to go. Just connect the speakers of your choice. The 9302 was designed for 4 ohm speakers, but works very well with a pair of 8 ohm, high efficiency speakers (above 90dB), like Klipsch, or even a quad set of 8 ohm speakers where each pair is connected in parallel (4 ohms total) to each stereo channel. This fully integrated Magnavox 9302 not only sounds great, but it looks great too. A front panel plate and bottom panel have also been custom fabricated. All controls use a standard 1/4 diameter shaft, so you can inexpensively change the knobs to whatever style you like. The professional restoration of this Magnavox 9302 includes the following repairs, upgrades and modifications. Remove 12 pin molex connector (umbilical connection to console tuner). Rewire power supply circuit to allow amplifier to operate as a stand alone unit. “Across the line” filter capacitor replaced with 2 new Y2X1 safety capacitors. Modified chassis to remove unused terminals and accommodate new switches, connectors and controls. Grounded 3 prong IEC connector installed at rear of chassis (3 wire grounded power cord is provided). Line fuse holder installed (2A slow blow) at rear of chassis. Install green neon pilot lamp at front panel of chassis. Eight (4 pairs) gold, rear panel mount, RCA audio input connectors mounted at rear of chassis. Four (2 pairs) gold, 5 way, speaker binding posts mounted at rear of chassis. Added a third 9 pin tube socket (for pre-amp tube) into pre-existing empty hole in chassis. Replaced one existing 9 pin tube socket. Integrated entire 6EU7 pre-amp circuit from console tuner, including. 6EU7 pre-amp tube. Volume control mounted to front panel of chassis (with K4 tone compensation circuit). Treble control mounted to front panel of chassis. (with K5 tone compensation circuit). Bass control mounted to front panel of chassis. (with K6 tone compensation circuit). Installed illuminated power switch on top of chassis. Installed a 4 position rotary selector switch mounted to front panel of chassis. Replaced multi-section electrolytic capacitor can with brand new CE Manufacturing Mallory FP type can. Install F & T multi-section tone capacitor into new pre-amp circuit. Replaced all paper capacitors with metal film tone capacitors. Tested all resistors and replaced any that were out of tolerance. Rewire as needed to create a fully integrated, multi-input amplifier. Fabricate wooden side boards and secure to chassis. Fabricate custom face plate and secure to front panel. Mount left and right stainless steel side rails, using four (4) threaded rods. Fabricate and Install chassis bottom, securing with four (4) stainless steel feet (1 standoff). Trim potentiometer shafts and mount new control knobs on all controls. Replace all eight (8) vacuum tubes. (1) 5U4GB rectifier tube (NOS American made). (3) 6EU7 amplifier tubes (NOS American made). (4) 6BQ5/EL84 beam power tubes (brand new, quad matched Sovtek). This Maggie is a rare beauty that doesn’t come up for sale very often. Don’t let it get away. A lot of man hours have gone into this amplifier and everything used in the restoration is of the highest quality. A schematic diagram will be provided. For sale is a very nice custom Magnavox 9300 Series Tube Amplifier. Several modifications and upgrades including. RCA inputs in the rear. Covers on output supplies (they just rest on the chassis and are not mounted). Power switch on front. Speaker jacks in rear. Power light / Green colored jewel light. Sturdy wooden base with handles. Four (4) tubes across the back are nice Mullard tubes. No trouble powering a set of large Advents or similar type of period speaker. If you only have one source, you could plug it right in to the amplifier and avoid the use of a pre-amp. I tested with both a pre-amp and a reel to reel player direct and the sound was the same. Note, you’ll want something with a volume control as there’s no volume control on the amp. This was recently serviced and is fully operational. Just changed the light bulb with a new bayonet style bulb. Re-soldered the right input connector. Repainted the wooden base in gloss black and touched up the Berry-colored chassis. Closest color match would be Revlon Baby Berry (I used nail polish to touch up). Amplifier will be professionally packaged to ensure a safe arrival. It will stay attached to the board, but all of the tubes and covers will be removed and packaged separately to avoid any breakage. This 1956 Magnavox mono tube amplifier model 128E includes its matching phono preamp control and. The original L-shaped wooden control panel overlay from the Magnasonic phonograph console it came from. The big 128E amp contains four 6V6 tubes and two 5Y3GT tubes, as well as a 12AX7. The original power indicator light is still wired in. The preamp contains a single 6AV5 tube and has three knobs that control volume, treble, and bass. The bass switch also turns the power on and off. Preamp has a mono phono input and a hard-wired rca cord that connects to the main amplifier. The small 12AX7 and 6AV5 tubes are from Sylvania and Motorola, the rest are all Magnavox brand. The amp platform measures 13 inches x 11 inches x 2 1/8 inches (side mounting fins are 3/4 inch each).
