I discovered this beauty while renovating some custom cabinetry in my late relative’s downtown Chicago apartment. He had impeccable taste and finding this was very much in keeping with my boyhood impressions of his high style. The Craftsmen 500 was produced in 1951 in Chicago, and this unit has a relatively low serial number (3638). I have not tested this unit but I believe all appears to be in good working order, with the exception of one of the two larger tubes (as seen in pictures). Hickok TV-3A/U TV-3 Tube Tester for Vintage HiFi Stereo or Guitar Amp or Radio. This is a genuine Hickok tester, serial number 819. It was owned by a gentleman who tinkered with radio and audio repair, but now needs to thin out his collection. It appears to be all original. We tested a metal 6L6 tube, and found the tester to be relatively accurate with great meter movement. However, we strongly suggest replacing all capacitors and other critical components for optimal performance. This is a vintage piece of equipment, and unless specifically noted above, it has not been fully restored with new components. It will inevitably need maintenance, however it’s impossible to know whether that will be next week or a few years down the road. Unless you are capable of doing this work yourself (or have access to someone who can), we suggest you revisit the idea of whether this is the right equipment for you.
