Vintage Tube Amp

Made in England vintage 1970′s Sound City 120B 120 Watt bass amplifier head. This head is a BEAST. Have built a loyal following over the years. He was afraid to plug it into a cabinet for fear that this mighty head might blow the speakers! I have since tested it out, plugging it into a Peavey 4×12 guitar cabinet. To my ear it sounded pretty good, and did not blow any speakers in the cabinet despite its power. Having been in storage for years I’m sure it could use some work. It has six (count’em six) EL34 power tubes providing the 120 watts, three of which of the legendary vintage Mullard EL34 power tubes, which I believe to be the original tubes. Of the 3 additional replacement EL34′s one is a vintage RCA, one a vintage GE and one a vintage Sylvania, all well respected tubes in their own right. All of the preamp tubes are Brimar (again, probably the original tubes). Two Partridge Transformer, which is what these heads originally came with. One does look newer so I don’t know if that might be a replacement. I can see that at least 3 of the pots have been replaced as they don’t match the rest. Some scratchiness in some of the pots. One of the knobs in the front was missing so I replaced that one with a “chicken head ” knob, which is the style of knob used on some Sound City heads. I used to sell a lot of guitar amps on here and in the past I would have taken a head such as this to an amp tech and would have paid hundreds of dollars to have them go through the amp and restore it prior to listing it. I will guaranteee it will power on. The general consensus (from what I’ve read in online threads) regarding these heads is that they could use some mods to improve their sound and playability, although there is some dispute as to the optimum mods that might be performed. Cosmetically this head is (in my opionion) in pretty good shape for a 40+ year old head. One small nick in the front bottom left section of the tolex but otherwise no rips or tears in the original tolex. Some wear in the top tolex and elsewhere. The white plastic “grounding” switch on the left portion of the back panel looks a bit stumpy–I don’t know if there was more there at opne time. I have priced this head taking into account the need for resoration and repair and would be listing it for MUCH more were it already restored. Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Pro Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order, freshly serviced and complete with the original two-button footswitch. Providing the general tonal character of a Twin Reverb, but boasting a tube rectifier and more manageable 40 watts of power, the Pro Reverb is a 2×12 amplifier with enough volume for large ensemble situations and the perfect balance between shimmering Blackface cleans and smooth, touch-sensitive overdrive. A great platform for effects pedals too, the cleans on this Pro are balanced, clear, and warm. Of course once you reach around 5 on the volume dial, things start to compress slightly, and you get that dynamic, glassy sound that adds just the right amount of grit to your tone. The tube-driven Reverb has plenty of splash and dimension, and the Tremolo has a strong, smooth pulse and wide range of speeds. The circuit has just been freshly serviced by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, and the preamp is extremely original, retaining nearly all of the original blue molded Ajax capacitors which are a hallmark of the sweet, musical character of the Blackface-era amps. The preamp features new small bias and bypass capacitors, and the stock CTS pots are all intact as well, dating to late’65. All of the original transformers are intact, manufactured by Schumacher, dating to the last weeks of 1965. The power supply has been freshly recapped with Sprague Atoms, and a modern three-prong power cable has been installed. The tube compliment includes a pair of JJ 6L6 power tubes, along with a Sovtek 5AR4 rectifier, and an assortment of modern valves in the preamp from the likes of Sovtek and JJ. The speakers are the original pair of Utah-made and Fender-branded 12 ceramic drivers with matching date codes from the 18th week of’66. The original speaker harness is intact too. The tube chart is fully intact with crisp corners. The original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth is intact, with some modest edge wear and a couple bald corners on the enclosure, as well as aging of the grill. The stock hardware includes the original tilt back legs, chassis straps, corners, handle, and sphinx glides (feet). This Pro Reverb has freshly biased tubes and sounds every bit as good as a Blackface Fender should. The original two-button footswitch for engaging the Reverb and Tremolo is included. Marshall’s meticulous recreation of their original and highly coveted 30 watt circuit, the JTM45 is a two-channel four-input affair, driving a pair of 5881 (6L6) power tubes and boasting a GZ34 rectifier. Yielding plenty of volume and punch, this pure and dynamic Marshall circuit really shines when jumpering the two channels for cascading gain and fine-tuned overdrive textures. It’s a straightforward, top-tier Marshall circuit, virtually untouched since it left the factory save for a pair of more recent, properly biased power tubes. The smooth black tolex is practically perfect save for one small scuff on the back panel and a tiny bit of wear on one back bottom corner. HIFI – Classics QUAD II. Quad II: Peter Walker and the Acoustical Manufacturing Company. But what kind of devices are actually setting the tone? The English Acoustical Manufacturing Company from Huntingdon, near Cambridge, was founded in 1936 by Peter Walker. In order to better address the emerging market for high fidelity equipment, the brand name QUAD was chosen for Quality Unit Amplifier Domestic. Back then the world was still playing mono and so the first product was the tube-based one. Single-channel QA12 Pre Amplifier from 1949, soon followed by the QC II Pre, and the “Tube Power Amplifier”. This power amplifier was replaced by the 15 watt Quad II amplifier in 1953 and remained in the range until 1967. In terms of circuitry, wide tolerances in the tubes and components are compensated for in a very clever way. Distortions of the output signal are greatly reduced by including the windings of the transformer. The possible power of the output tubes is also not fully used, which makes the amplifier very reliable and durable.
