Up for sale, a 1958 Guild Masteramp model 66-J, recently serviced and in perfect working order. One of the earliest tube amps produced by Guild, this tweed wonder shares many similarities with the narrow panel Fender Deluxe, with a dual 6V6 output stage and 5Y3 rectifier, dual triode preamp tubes, four input design, and alnico Jensen 12 speaker. The tone is warm, dynamic, and clear, with a surprising amount of headroom and just enough overdrive to deliver ideal bite and smooth saturation when you dime it out. The bias-based tremolo circuit has a nice strong pulse as well, and the original wedge footswitch for activating the effect is included too! Produced for only a few short years when the Guild guitar company first came into existence, the Masteramp 66-J is quite rare and was made in-house at their factory in Hoboken, New Jersey. While there is some credence to reports that Ampeg supplied Guild with certain elements of their amp builds, the tonal response is more analogous to Fender amps of the era. The circuit is very original, with stock transformers, and a complete recap of the main power supply as well as a few caps in the preamp to keep the amp operating within original factory spec. The stock Centralab pots are all intact and date to the first weeks of 1958. The power tubes are a fresh pair of Electro Harmonix 6V6s, along with a vintage USA-made 5Y3 rectifier and combination of modern and vintage preamp tubes. The speaker is an era-correct Jensen P12Q that has ideal headroom and a near mint blueish green speaker frame with the original Jensen foil sticker on the magnet bell. The original two-tone tweed and brown leatherette covering is intact, with wear along the edges of the enclosure and on the bottom of the cab in particular. The original oxblood grillcloth is intact too, with distinctive “spaghetti” swirls, and a modern leather handle has been installed. The chrome chassis retains the majority of the white silkscreen lettering, the chrome still has plenty of shine with minimal pitting, and the stock Dakaware knobs are present.
