Up for sale, a 1967 Fender Vibro Champ, freshly serviced, very original, and quite clean cosmetically. This little Blackface-era Fender wonder delivers five watts of pure Class A tube tone. A surprisingly loud amp with the original alnico 8 speaker, this Vibro Champ has just the right amount of glassy, sparkling clean tone before pushing into smooth, lightly compressed tube overdrive at about 4 on the volume knob. Dynamic, responsive, and absolutely huge sounding when you put a microphone in front of it, it’s hard to beat the Vibro Champ for pure simplicity and great tone. And of course, Fender’s lush sounding tremolo circuit has a strong pulse and wide range of speeds, perfect for subtle shifts in volume or machine gun chop. The circuit is very original, with only a few new Sprague electrolytics in the preamp to keep the amp operating optimally. The stock Schumacher-made transformers date between late 1966 and early’67, and the CTS pots date to the 42nd week of’66. The tube chart is clean and intact with a “QH” code which translates to August of 1967. The tube compliment includes a vintage USA-made (likely GE) 6V6 power tube, Sylvania 5Y3 rectifier, and a couple vintage 12AX7s. The speaker is the original Fender-branded Oxford 8 with a clean blue Fender label on the alnico magnet. The original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth are quite clean. The faceplate has only one visible scuff, complete with its full compliment of witch hat knobs. The stock handle caps, sphinx glides (feet), and chassis straps are all intact, and the hardware shows only light surface patina. Both back panels are original, and the tolex shows only light wear on a couple of the corners. This Vibro Champ is an ideal example of Blackface tone that sure to delight both discerning collectors and serious players. Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Deluxe Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Widely considered to be one of the greatest tube amps of all time, this Deluxe Reverb has a very original circuit that has been freshly serviced by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar. Stocked with new properly-biased EH 6V6 power tubes and a full compliment of new JJ preamp tubes, this Deluxe delivers the shimmering, balanced clean tone that has made these amps a mainstay in studios and on stages for decades. The amp has a clear and dynamic sound, delivering sparkling cleans that are a great effects pedal platform. The amp starts to saturate with smooth tube overdrive after about 5 on the volume dial, cascading into rich, lightly compressed crunch as you push the volume to 10. The Reverb is very lush with a long decay, and the tremolo has a strong pulse with an almost three-dimensional quality to the effect when you increase the intensity. The circuit is very original, with all of the stock Schumacher-made transformers (Fender’s primary transformer supplier in the Blackface era) dating to late 1965. The preamp is loaded with the full compliment of the original blue Ajax molded capacitors, a key ingredient in the dynamic, musical tone of Fender’s Blackface amps, and all of the original CTS pots are intact as well, with date codes from 1965. The power amp has been professionally recapped with F&Ts, and the preamp features a new bias cap and smaller bypass caps to ensure the amp is operating within original factory spec. All new caps have been carefully sleeved in their original Minimite wrappers for a flawless vintage look. A three-prong power cable has been installed as well. The original Oxford 12K5-6 12 speaker is intact, freshly reconed and a very rare speaker, used only in the Deluxe Reverb. The speaker has a clean black frame, Fender blue foil sticker on the magnet, and 1966 date stamp on the frame. Inside the cabinet, the original tube chart is mostly intact too. Cosmetically, the amp is very original, with stock smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth. The amp was at one time fitted with tilt-back legs, and the small mounting holes for this hardware have been cleanly doweled on the sides of the cabinet. The lower back panel is original, while the top panel is a modern factory-spec replacement. All of the original hardware is present including the chassis straps, handle caps, sphinx glides (feet), corners, and raised Fender logo on the baffle. The original faceplate also shows sparingly little wear with bold graphics and stock witch hat knobs. The original two-button footswitch is included. Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Bandmaster head in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This Pre-CBS Fender piggyback amp features original smooth blonde tolex and a AA763 circuit, typically only seen on the very first Blackface amps. The rare combination of cosmetics on this amp was only seen from the last months of 1963 through mid-64, and this amp sounds particularly good with a matched pair of brand new and freshly biased Tung Sol 5881 power tubes. This Bandmaster delivers the incredible cleans which are a hallmark of the Blackface tone, with sparkle, clarity and definition unlike any amps before or since. Pushing the amp beyond 4 on the Volume dial on either channel yields natural grit and tube breakup, overdriving hard when you dime the controls. The tremolo has a nice strong pulse and a very dimensional sound with a wide range of speeds. The circuit is very clean and original, with the stock Schumacher transformers dating from late 1963-64. All of the original blue molded Ajax capacitors are intact in the preamp and an essential part of the Blackface Fender tone, while the main filter caps have been upgraded to Sprague Atoms to ensure that the circuit is working optimally. The original CTS pots are all intact too, with visible date codes from the 40th week of 1963. A three-prong power cable has also been installed. In addition to the Tung Sol power tubes, the amp features a pair of USA-made General Electric 12AX7 preamp tubes along with modern valves from the likes of Mullard and EH. The original tube chart is mostly intact inside the head, with an ML date stamp that translates to December of 1963. The original smooth blonde tolex shows some scuffs and light signs of wear on the edges of the enclosures, and the baffle has been freshly regrilled with wheat grillcloth and fitted with the original raised Fender logo. The back panel is a modern replacement with matching smooth blonde tolex. The hardware shows its fair share of surface patina yet is all accounted for including the corners, handle caps, sphinx glides (feet), and piggyback clip bars. Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Pro Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original Jensen C12N speaker pair and two-button footswitch. Providing the general tonal character of a Twin Reverb, but boasting a tube rectifier and more manageable 40 watts of power, the Pro Reverb is a 2×12 amplifier with enough volume for large ensemble situations and the perfect balance between shimmering Blackface cleans and smooth, touch sensitive overdrive. A great platform for effects pedals too, the cleans on this Pro are balanced, clear, and warm. Of course once you reach around 5 on the volume dial, things start to compress slightly, and you get that dynamic, glassy sound that adds just the right amount of grit to your tone. The Reverb has plenty of depth and splash, and the Tremolo has a nice deep chop. Very original and well maintained, this Pro Reverb is ready for stage and studio use. The circuit is extremely original, with the original compliment of Schumacher transformers (Fender’s largest supplier of Blackface-era transformers), dating between late 1965 and the first weeks of’66. The stock CTS pots are all intact as well, dating to late’65, and the chassis stamp notes a 1966 build date. The preamp is untouched save for a few small electrolytic capacitors, and the amp retains all of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps which are a hallmark of the Blackface sound. The power supply has also been professionally recapped. A modern three-prong power cable has been installed, and the amp is loaded with mostly vintage valves including a pair of likely original RCA 6L6GC power tubes. The speakers are the original pair of Jensen C12NA 12 ceramic drivers, and the speakers date to the 30th week of’65 with original foil stickers on the magnets and clan black frames. The tube chart is also fully intact inside the cabinet with crisp corners and a PB stamp which translates to February of 1966. The original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth is intact and in great shape, showing only light wear and still looking surprisingly clean after half a century. The cloth has only faint aging, and the tolex shows only some minor scuffs and nicks on the edges of the enclosure. The stock hardware is in great shape including original tilt back legs, chassis straps, corners, sphinx glides (feet), and handle. The faceplate is extremely clean, with a full compliment of witch hat knobs. A clean and early Blackface example with a Fender Electrical Instrument Co. Faceplate and no-logo cabinet, the Princeton Reverb is the perfect amplifier for small club gigs and studio sessions, delivering both well-balanced, sparkling cleans and smooth, harmonic rich overdrive at higher volumes. The Reverb is extremely lush and the Tremolo has a nice pulse with a wide range of speeds. The chassis retains all of the original Schumacher-made transformers (Fender’s primary transformer supplier in the Blackface era), with date codes from the 2nd to 28th weeks of’65. Aside from a modern three-prong power cable and new bias capacitor, the circuit is virtually untouched, boasting all of the famed blue molded Ajax tone caps which are an essential part of the sweet and musical character of Fender’s Blackface preamps. The original CTS pots are all intact as well, with visible date codes from late 1964. The power tubes are a pair of matched Groove Tubes 6V6s, and the preamp tubes are all matched Groove Tubes valves as well. The faceplate is clean, with the Fender Electric Instrument Co. Text that would disappear mid-year with Fender’s CBS buyout. The knobs are mostly original as well, with two slightly newer knobs for the tremolo controls. The original Oxford 10J4 ceramic magnet speaker is intact, with a clean black frame, Fender blue foil sticker on the magnet, and date stamp on the frame from the 15th week of’65. The tube chart is completely intact and quite clean too, with a “OH” date stamp which translates to August of’65. As the photos show, the original black tolex has weathered the decades well, with only a few very minor nicks and scuffs and wear on the two front bottom corners. The amp has a brand new birch ply baffle, replacing the original MDF, and this new baffle has been fitted with genuine’60s Fender silver sparkle grillcloth. All of the original hardware is present including the chassis straps, handle caps, and sphinx glides. The original two-button footswitch is included. The caps have not been updated so depending on who you are, they might need to be replaced soon. I can’t guarantee how long they will last, being older than 50 years. The amplifier has been turned on and outputs what seems to be a good signal with the typical guitar amp hum. My standards are different than those of experts. To clarify, what has been updated is the tweed cover, the grill cloth and the handle. All the parts shown in the last photos are original to the amplifier. The wood encasing/box is original.
