RARE 1967 Hilgen Challenger R2024 Tube Amp 112 Combo 7591 Guitar Sano Vintage
Sunday, May 10th, 2020The Hilgen amps are very hard to come by as they weren’t really mass produced and were only made for three years. This one is fully serviced with no issues or weird quirks, and ready for years of enjoyment! The Challenger is an 18W all-tube point to point handwired 112 combo with two channels that each have individual volume and tone controls, with onboard reverb and tremolo. The first channel is more Fender-y and has guitar and bright inputs. The second channel is a bit richer and reminds me of vintage Ampeg (which Jack also supposedly helped with designs as they were both New Jersey companies), and has instrument and accordion inputs. All jacks and controls work as should. I replaced the electrolytic caps and one out of tolerance wax & paper capacitor with new audio grade caps. All of the original Mullard mustard caps are still intact!! I also removed the death cap and installed a grounded power supply cable for safety. I cleaned all pots, jacks, and power/rectifier tube sockets. This uses a 6X4 (reverb driver), two 12AX7, and two 12AU7 in the preamp. It also uses a pair of 7591 power tubes and a 5U4GB tube rectifier. This comes with the original CTS 12 speaker that still sounds great also! The reverb is pretty unique as it’s a shorter and slightly brighter one, although it sounds great and works really well with the circuit. The tremolo is currently in Off position and the previous owner couldn’t find the footswitch. Any standard two button footswitch with a 1/4 jack should do the trick though. Cosmetically it’s in pretty great shape for being a little over fifty years old! The original grill cloth and tolex are both fully intact and the faceplate still looks great! One of the rubber feet is partially broken off and it does show some minor wear from age though. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. I will remove the power and rectifier tubes and package them separately inside the amplifier. The item “RARE 1967 Hilgen Challenger R2024 Tube Amp 112 Combo 7591 Guitar Sano Vintage” is in sale since Tuesday, March 24, 2020. This item is in the category “Musical Instruments & Gear\Guitars & Basses\Guitar Amplifiers”. The seller is “new_old_noise” and is located in Bay City, Michigan. You are looking at a Vintage 1990 Seymour Duncan 84-40 2-Channel 2×10 All Tube Combo Amp. This is the notorious 84-40 combo, often compared to the Vox AC-30 with all the drive of a Mesa Boogie. Made in either the late 1980′s or the early 1990′s, this 84-40 features an all tube pre-amp driving 4 EL-84 power tubes. Two channels, switchable via the panel, or with a footswitch (not included). This is a small powerful channel switching amp with multiple boosts for a very clean, to an over-drive monster. The amp performs very well at low volumes. 40 Watts into 2 10 speakers. There are some scuffs, scratches and minor tears in the tolex. Instrument Control Bezel has a few scratches. All lettering is legible. Overall, a really nice amp. Look at the pictures closely. Vintage 1990 Seymour Duncan 84-40 2-Channel 2×10 All Tube Combo Amp! 4 EL-84′s
Saturday, April 18th, 2020Who knew that Duncan designed great amplifiers too! A simple valve amp, yet with many features! It’s got two channels with a shared parametric EQ set of bass, mid and treble. Got a nice sounding onboard TRUE spring reverb with a large, long tank! Send and return jacks for effects loop. Also a footswitch (not included) jack. But there is also an onboard channel selector switch, which is really convenient. 2 10 custom made speakers round out the fairly stout feature set. But back to the 2 channels of this unit, as I’m guessing that the SOUND of this box is what you are wondering about. Channel one, which has a volume and overdrive knob that have “pull bright” and “pull boost” functions, is definitely your clean platform. I think the “overdrive” function is really a misnomer. Because even if you max out that knob and additionally pull out the boost, you will NOT get overdrive. What you DO get is a nice, shimmery V-x AC style “crunch” that sounds like the amp just crested the point over the edge of breakup. Makes sense since this machine has 4, count em’ FOUR EL-84 tubes! SD should really have called the overdrive knob on the 1st channel something more like the “grit” control! Now, channel two, you WILL get overdrive. It gets progressively dirtier. Not gonna get you into distortion territory, but pull out the boost and I feel that the amp goes into turbo overdrive! I really like the way the 84-40 sounds in this mode! Just make sure to turn down the gain when you do so, unless you want to get some gnarly fuzz…. You CAN get a version of it with the control set high and the boost pulled out. Makes this a very versatile sonic tool for you to paint your tonal landscapes! And Blues Rock phenom Joe Bonamassa LOVES these Seymour Duncan Amps, too! Check out youtube videos to see Joe gushing over the Convertible model! Grab this rare gem now before someone else does!
