I think that’s why user reviews vary so much — the amps themselves varied. The founder said the power output spec was under-rated and the output section was nowhere near clipping at rated output. A big part of why the Legends had the reputation of being as loud as similarly rated tube amps. It may have been the G12-80. Both how it responded to sub-watt inputs, and because it was so efficient that I could barely crack open the volume knobs at sub-eviction levels. Never had the chance to dime any of them (Legend amps). With all the volume knobs at 7 they kept up with a cranked [Ampeg] SVT. They are great rock and roll amps. If you can find one with the original Celestions and play rock and roll, get one. They are handmade and were very expensive when new. One of the secrets on these is to run a patch cord between the effects loop, which has it’s own attenuator. Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Vibrolux in excellent condition and in good working order. This rare 1×12 “Brownface” version of the Vibrolux is a bridge between the Tweed and Blackface models in both specs and tone, with a glassy, touch sensitive quality, robust cleans, and rich overdrive characteristics when you dime it out. Pushing 35 all tube watts through a vintage Oxford alnico 12LN speaker, there’s plenty to love about the versatility and tone offered by this Fender. The amp has plenty of clean headroom and the sweet sag of a tube rectifier, and when pushed above 5 on the volume dial, things start to compress slightly and cascade into sweet overdrive with just enough bite. The bias-based tremolo circuit also has a very strong, thumping pulse that’s notably deeper than later Fender circuits, with a wide range of speeds. The circuit is freshly serviced and largely original, retaining the original Schumacher output transformer and choke which both date to mid-1961. The power transformer is a properly spec’d replacement for this amp with a blank black bell cover. Many of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps are intact in the preamp and an integral part of the sweetness and clarity of the circuit. All of the stock pots are intact as well (dating to’61) with largely original solder joints and cloth covered wire. The power supply has been recapped, and the bias cap also has a small trim pot piggybacked on it to perfectly dial in the bias of the matched pair of vintage small bottle USA-made 6L6 power tubes. The amp has also been fitted with a modern three-prong power cable. The preamp tubes are a mix of modern and vintage valves from the likes of Sylvania and RCA. The speaker is the right make and model for this amplifier (Oxford 12LN) and era-correct, although it dates a bit earlier than the amp with a code on the edge of the frame which translates to 1957. Cosmetically, this amp would look great in a studio, with original rough brown tolex and wheat grillcloth. The leather handle is a modern replacement, as is the upper back panel, while the lower back panel is original. The faceplate retains all of the original brown barrel knobs. This Vibrolux is a rare, thoroughly serviced, and largely original vintage Pre-CBS Fender amp that’s ready for stage and studio use. Vintage Univox ULM-6 1×10 5-watt tube combo. Works well, but cuts out occasionally when driven hard. Looks like the speaker may be a replacement, maybe wrong type and why the amp is cutting out. Sounds awesome when it works. Doesn’t cut out when playing at lower volume, works fine then. Someone painted the tolex, you may want to change that. Looks to be original 2 prong cord. First off, this amp is amazing, it has been serviced. I had the caps and tremolo looked at, repaired, and 3 prong cord installed. Unfortunately, the reverb is not really working. The reverb signal is very faint. I have tried different tanks but no such luck. The tremolo is 100% and trippy as hell. It goes from vintage smooth to hard square-rhythmic chopping. WARNINGDaisy chain this amp and it WILL melt faces! The alnico CTS speaker looks original, or at least within the decade. Either way, like I said great sounding amp. A classic all tube vintage monster at a great price. Point to point, easy to access and repair, mod, whatever. Weighs around 35 pounds. The leather handle is a replacement.
