Very cool-looking little Grommes LJ-2 mono vacuum tube amplifier from mid-1950′s, sounds sweet! Supplied with full tube complement and Howard Sams Photofact Folder, this “Little Jewel” (that’s what “LJ” stands for) could use a little TLC, mainly from a full power capacitor replacement. All tubes tested good, except one section of the 6SL7 was slightly low (did not appear to affect sound). Brought up very slowly with a variac, the unit did not misbehave, and drove an 8-ohm speaker nicely with about 10 watts, just a little scratchy on the volume control. This listing is for 2 Grommes Monoblock Amplifiers. They were just gone through and had a couple mods made. The powers supplies were just rebuilt and the selenium rectifiers were removed. A self-biasing circuit was also installed. The gain, DC balance and dampening adjustment are all working as they should. I had just had these amps running on the bench and they sounds great. The amps are guaranteed not to be DOA but due to their age they can not be warrantied beyond that. Power Tube(s): 2X 6550. Preamp Tube(s): 12AU7 (one uses 2 and the other uses 3). Operational condition is untested, as I do not have the equipment to test vintage tube gear safely and I do not plug it in to avoid damaging it. About 12-15 watts per channel. One of these amplifiers belonged to my father. I had planned to do a tone control bypass and set these up as power amplifiers only. My friend Kara Chaffee, chief engineer at deHavilland Electric Amplifier Co, did the preliminary wiring to bypass the tone controls already. If you want integrated amplifiers, it is easy to reverse. What is left to do is change the power supply can capacitors, and probably the coupling caps, etc. Included is a schematic with Kara’s hand-written instructions on how to complete the mod. The power tubes are not pictured, but I will include a full set of vintage tubes with each amplifier. These amps are not functional in their current state. I guarantee that the transformers are good as they have been tested by Kara. Rest assured these will be safely packaged. Thanks and good luck!
