Supro Amplifier by Valco Chicago 51. Crank it up, this amp is ready to “wail”. This amps sounds great full-up. This amp has a new 10 speaker and. New JJ’s brand 6SL7 preamp tube. This 12 volt amp is clean sounding from 1 to 3. On the volume dial, then starts to break-up at 3.5 and becomes progressively more distorted as the volume is turned up. One Brand New Preamp 6SL7 JJ brand. Fourteen and a half inches tall. Seven a half deep. This amp is serviced and the old power cord is replaced. By a six-foot-long grounded cord. The Jensen speaker gives the amp a deeper bottom end with no brittle highs at all. The treble control knob is very responsive and provides a full pallet of tones from bass to treble. Up for sale, a 1967 Harmony model 525 tube amp in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Made in Chicago, USA by Valco (the parent company known for producing the Supro, National, and Airline brands among others), the 525 is essentially a Supro Thunderbolt with the added benefit of individual Treble and Bass controls. Rich, powerful, and nuanced, the 525 pushes 35 watts through a pair of original RCA 6L6GC power tubes and an original Jensen C15P speaker. For everything from rich cleans and wooly rhythm tones to saturated tube overdrive further up on the volume dial, this Harmony delivers a pure sound with a simple yet ingenious circuit. The signature sizzle, drive, and subtle compression of Valco/Supro’s preamp design offers a very dynamic and articulate signal balanced by the warmth and fullness of the single 15 speaker. The circuit is very original, with CTS pots that date to 1967 and original impressively sized transformers as well. The faceplate retains its original gleaming chrome plating, with all of the original black silkscreen graphics and lettering, as well as a minty trio of chrome insert knobs. The Jensen C15P speaker has a near mint black speaker frame, gold foil label on the ceramic magnet, and date code from’67. The original black ostrich tolex is extremely clean and the grill cloth retains its vivid red racing stripes. The Valco-made Harmony 525 is a classic, oft-overlooked model with the same preamp, tube and speaker compliment, and rich tone as the Supro Thunderbolt. Up for sale, a 1960 Gibson GA-80T Vari-Tone tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. An early example of one of Gibson’s rarest amps with date codes spanning late 1959 and very early’60, the GA-80T was produced only from 1959-61 and only roughly 600 were produced total across all three years. A true tonal powerhouse with a preamp that boasts a pair of the revered 5879 pentode tubes, this amp is particularly rich, detailed, and dynamic sounding. Essentially the 5879 is a more stable and less microphonic version of the EF86, and paired with a 6L6 output section and Jensen P15P alnico speaker, the tone can be glassy or gritty, chiming or guttural with the twist of a knob. Of course at the heart of the circuit is the six position push-button Vari-Tone circuit, which lifts the same sweet, scooped, and distinct tones found in the ES-345 and 355 of the era. Activating a Varitone setting disengages the pedestrian Tone knob and the way this tone circuit shapes the sound of the guitar is truly astounding. Many of these settings really highlight Chicken Pickin’, with a musical twang and quack, and the often robust and unique nature of these tones really makes the Varitone settings stand out in a mix. The Tremolo is also one of the most pronounced and throbbing circuits we’ve ever heard on a vintage tube amp. The pulse of the trem is strong without being too choppy, and for an effect that essentially is just volume modulation, it really has a three-dimensional quality. The circuit has just been throughly serviced and recapped, and both original transformers are intact. A three-prong power cord has been installed, and the amp has in short been meticulously gone through to retain the integrity and power of this circuit. The original CentraLab pots date to the 20th week of 1960, while the date stamp on the speaker frame is from the 52nd week of 1959. The speaker has as particularly clean frame and original foil label on the magnet bell, and the speaker has just been professionally reconed. Cosmetically, the original tweed and oxblood grillcloth are both intact, with a minty and stock raised “Gibson” logo on the face of the amp. The tweed does show some modest staining and its fair share of scuffs, but overall is remarkably intact (always a rarer feat the larger the tweed amp). All of the stock knobs are present, including the chicken head knobs for Volume and Tone and the dark burgundy caps for the Vari-Tone push-button controls. Some of the original black silkscreen lettering is present on the faceplate as well which has plenty of sheen on the chrome plating. Other original features the original brown rubber feet and the original luggage-style handle with matching “Gibson” logo and tweed material in a lucite frame. The original wooden wedge footswitch is included to activate the Tremolo. This Gibson GA-80T Vari-Tone amp is very original, thoroughly serviced, and a true force to be reckoned with, standing up to the Fender competition of the era with an incredible array of on-board features. 1961 Fender Super Vintage Tube Amp Pre-CBS Brownface 2×10 Jensen P10Q, 6G4. 1961 Fender Super in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This Brownface Pre-CBS tube amp was produced February 1961 with original transformers, a very original and freshly serviced chassis circuit, a full compliment of vintage tubes/tube shields, brown foot switch, and a pair of vintage 1958 blue frame Jensen P10Q alnico speakers with fresh recones. The rough brown tolex is intact along with the original oxblood grillcloth. As the photos show, the tolex and grill are particularly clean, and both back panels are present too. All hardware is stock and accounted for including the dark brown plastic “dogbone” handle, corners, sphinx glides (feet), and flat “Fender” logo on the amp’s face. The circuit has just been thoroughly tested by the Amp Guys (maker of Valve Train amps in Orlando/ invoice included) and the original yellow Astron capacitors in the preamp are all intact. Aside from replacing the two bias caps, adding a bias trim pot, as well as the vibrato caps, the preamp is untouched. The original CTS pots are all intact too. The power amp has been recapped with new F&T caps (encased in the Astron cardboard covering) to ensure reliable, trouble-free use for years to come. 3 prong grey power cord. The tubes consist of a matched pair of USA 5881 RCA along with a host of vintage preamp tubes by RCA and General Electric. The speakers are an original pair of Jensen P10Qs (though non original to the amp). Both speakers have clean frames with only light speckles of rust and clean Jensen labels. A direct descendant of the Tweed era Super amp, this early Brownface example sports the same transformers and speakers as its close predecessor, delivering hi-fi clarity and sparkling, robust clean tones. Turning the amp up past 5 on the volume dial yields thick, chewy overdrive with great touch-sensitive responsiveness and EQ controls that have an incredibly wide sweep. And of course this is the most compact Brownface-era amp to feature the “Harmonic Vibrato” circuit. A true pitch shifting vibrato (not the tremolo found on most Fender amps), the Harmonic Vibrato sound has a thick, Leslie-esque throb and warble, with a three-dimensional quality and depth that is perfectly suited to the speaker compliment and cabinet size. Whether you want a slow, undulating swampy sound or faster, pulsating vibrato, this Super delivers the goods. Up for sale, a 1954 Fender Super, complete a pair of Jensen P10R alnico 10 speakers. A “Wide Panel” Tweed amp, this particular iteration of the Super is one of the earliest examples of the 5D4 circuit, only available from 1954-55. The Tweed Super is the baby brother of the Bassman in many respects, offering the same harmonic rich, dynamic tones in a more studio friendly and portable enclosure. The low end is wooly and thick, the midrange has just the right amount of punch, and the top end is classic’50s Fender with detail and balance that few other amps can match. Clear and present, with incredible low end response even at low volumes, the Super allows you to easily dial in the right amount of bite and a touch of overdrive when you dig in. After around 4-5 on the volume dial, the amp cascades into full tube saturation, with sweet, singing overdrive. Thoroughly maintained, this Fender Super sounds every bit as good as vintage amp lore would suggest. The circuit has just been gone through by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, and the preamp boasts a bevy of original Black Cat tone caps as well as the original trio of Stackpole pots which date to’54. An original Astron “dynamite” cap is coupled to the Tone control, and the majority of the original resistors are intact too. The power amp has been professionally recapped with Sprague Atom capacitors to ensure optimal performance and stability. The power transformer is the original Triad, and the open bell output transformer appears original or at least era-correct, dating to 1954 although the leads have been spliced. On the faceplate, the stock chicken head knobs are intact and a modest amount of the original white lettering is present as well. The 5D4 circuit was also the first Super to feature a Standby switch, like the example seen here. The amp is fitted with a pair of vintage Jensen P10R speakers with very dark green frames and professional recones, dating to the first weeks of 1960. The stock tube chart is present and quite clean, denoting the 5C4 circuit, but also modified by hand at the factory to reflect the updated tube compliment of the 5D4 circuit (a common occurrence given how quickly circuits changed in the’50s and Leo Fender’s propensity to not waste anything). The amp has an older and extremely well executed retweed, very faithful to original spec and lightly aged. The lower back panel, in contrast, does have its original tweed covering. Comparable only to the Bassman in terms of Fender’s tweed dual 6L6 offerings, the Super is a standout favorite among collectors and players alike!
