Up for sale is a A-323B 1940′s era tube amplifier from the Altec Lansing Corporation of Hollywood, California in original untouched condition. It has a six tube compliment consisting of 2-6J7′s, 1-6J5, 1-6L6GA’s, 1-6E6GA’s and a 5U4G rectifier. These Altec amps are phenomenal in that they have a flat frequency response of + or – 1db from 20 cycles to 20000 cycles and full rated power output within 1db from 35 cycles to 12000 cycles! It has two inputs, one for phonograph (high gain) and one for radio (low gain). It has three outputs for speakers 2.5-6 ohms, 8-12 ohms, and 16-24 ohms. When plugged in, the tubes light up, no other testing has been done on the amp. It’s cosmetically in good shape for its age with 70 years of dust. It is dusty with some dirt. The corners have light rust and the edge tips of the cover are bent. The knobs are original. These beautiful Altec 872a “Madrid” are from about 1974. Part of the 870 series from the era. The original Spanish style. Lattice grills were broken so custom grills have been added. Guilford of Maine “Crosstown” Fabric. Grill cloth, acoustically transparent. The original dust screens are still intact behind the new grills. The cloth color is “graphite”, the grill frames were made from new 1/4 birch plywood. The grills are removable (8 stapled on velcro squares each) however service is performed out the rear of the cabinet. The Original Altec badges were retained and used on the new grills. The cabinets have been hand oiled and rubbed out several times then hand waxed for durability and protection of the wood. One cabinet has a few scars, “character” as they say, on the top, please see photos. The bases have some edge wear. One corner on the bottom back of one has had a small repair and a replaced foot. From any angle these just look amazing. Dean Martin would have loved these. The original 420Y Biflex woofers and the crossbar mounted tweeters are all working beautifully. All of the insulation is original and complete and intact. The backs of the cabinets are as nice as the front, the terminals are in perfect condition. Original factory stickers still in place with each speakers serial number, only two digits apart, these are a true pair. The speakers have only been auditioned by ear, no electronic testing has been performed. These have that true classic Altec vintage sound and I think they have just a great look. These probably weigh in at over 50 lbs each, 21 wide x 24 tall x 17 deep… They aren’t perfect but they are very nice and hard to come by. Receiver, Turntable and other items in the photos are not included. I don’t mess around. Sale is final once they leave my property. This mono tube amp would be a great project for anyone who knows how to work on tube amps or wants something to learn on. Great if you have one already and need another for stereo! Altec Lansing is known in the studio and in the hi-fi world for their quality craftsmanship and stellar audio equipment. Serial number looks like 2404 but it’s hard to read on the chassis. The unit powers up and the visible tubes begin to glow except for the 6CG7. I haven’t tested it any further. Please see photos for the specific physical condition of the unit. All of the lights on the front panel light up when switching to their respective source. I wish I could fix it up myself but I don’t have the wherewithal.
