Up for sale, a 1957 Fender Princeton in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This narrow panel tweed amp has absolutely stunning and virtually un-ambered original tweed, and is one of the more impressive golden-age Fender amps to come through our shop of late, complete with the original Victoria Luggage brown canvas cover. With its narrow panel configuration, this Princeton is considered the “big box” version, with a cab that’s far larger than the single 8 alnico speaker requires, and the resulting sound is deceptively round and rich for the relatively small speaker size. The circuit couldn’t be more simple and pure, with single Volume and Tone knobs and a Class A circuit design, powered by a single 6V6 power tube. The tone is articulate, dynamic and commanding, with the sizzle and churning overdrive of a Champ, but with more tonal range and fuller low end. The top end response is just right, and the amp doesn’t get too trebly, making the tone control quite usable for dialing in exactly as much zing and snap as you desire. The circuit is very original and only serviced as necessary for optimal functionality, retaining the original Triad transformers. The original Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and yellow Astron capacitors are intact, with the pots dating to the 41st week of 1956. The power supply caps and smaller electrolytics have been replaced with high quality modern Spragues. The tubes are all vintage valves with a “coke bottle” Westinghouse 6V6, Phillips 5Y3 rectifier, and UK preamp tube of indeterminate origin. The speaker is an era-correct Oxford 8 driver which has been professionally reconed and dates to’59 with a very clean gray frame and stock wiring harness with RCA end. The tube chart is notable for its well-preserved condition, with perfect corners, handwritten serial number, and “GG” date stamp which translates to July of 1957. There is barely any ambering of the original tweed, with only a few minor scuffs on the bottom corners. The faceplate is extremely clean, with all of the white silkscreened font, shiny chrome, and a pair of original chicken head knobs. This amp is a true rarity given its condition, and this particular example has been carefully tested and inspected to ensure originality and ideal functionality. The original brown canvas Victoria Luggage cover is included. The cover has some loose stitching and isolated spots of missing trim, but still presents well. Supro Amplifier by Valco Chicago 51. Crank it up, this amp is ready to “wail”. This amps sounds great full-up. This amp has a new 10 speaker and. New JJ’s brand 6SL7 preamp tube. This 12 volt amp is clean sounding from 1 to 3. On the volume dial, then starts to break-up at 3.5 and becomes progressively more distorted as the volume is turned up. One Brand New Preamp 6SL7 JJ brand. Fourteen and a half inches tall. Seven a half deep. This amp is serviced and the old power cord is replaced. By a six-foot-long grounded cord. The Jensen speaker gives the amp a deeper bottom end with no brittle highs at all. The treble control knob is very responsive and provides a full pallet of tones from bass to treble. Manufactured by Stackpole Electronics. 304-303 = 3rd week of 1943 or 1953. 304-707 = 7th week of 1947 or 1957. Actually a pairing of two different tweed-era Princetons, the exceedingly clean cabinet with original lacquered tweed, leather handle, logo, oxblood grill, and tube chart dates to 1956, while the chassis itself has components dating from late 1959-early 60. The circuit couldn’t be more simple and pure, with single Volume and Tone knobs and a Class A circuit design, powered by a single 6V6 power tube. The tone is articulate, dynamic and commanding, with the sizzle and churning overdrive of a Champ, but with more tonal range and fuller low end. The top end response is just right, and the amp doesn’t get too trebly, making the tone control quite usable for dialing in exactly as much zing and snap as you desire. The circuit is completely untouched, and the original Schumacher transformers which date to the 44th week of’59 (output) and 12th week of 1960 (power). The original Stackpole pots, yellow Astron capacitors, and even the original filter caps are all present. As a testament to the construction of these amps, it has never needed to be serviced. The power tube and 5Y3 rectifier are both Sylvania valves, while the single 12AX7 in the preamp was manufactured by Tung Sol. The original two-prong gray power cable has been upgraded to a black, grounded three-prong. The speaker has a very clean gray frame, original cone, and stock cloth wiring harness with RCA end. The tube chart is notable for its well-preserved condition, with perfect corners and clearly written serial number. There is light ambering of the tweed, with a few exceedingly minor marks and scuffs, and wear mostly relegated to the bottom corners of the enclosure. On the bottom, there is some staining from the rubber feet in a ring around the sphinx glides. The faceplate is very clean, with all of the white silkscreened font, shiny chrome, and a pair of original chicken head knobs. This amp is a true rarity, given its condition, and this particular example has been carefully tested and inspected to ensure originality and ideal functionality. Up for sale, a 1960 Gibson GA-80T Vari-Tone tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. An early example of one of Gibson’s rarest amps with date codes spanning late 1959 and very early’60, the GA-80T was produced only from 1959-61 and only roughly 600 were produced total across all three years. A true tonal powerhouse with a preamp that boasts a pair of the revered 5879 pentode tubes, this amp is particularly rich, detailed, and dynamic sounding. Essentially the 5879 is a more stable and less microphonic version of the EF86, and paired with a 6L6 output section and Jensen P15P alnico speaker, the tone can be glassy or gritty, chiming or guttural with the twist of a knob. Of course at the heart of the circuit is the six position push-button Vari-Tone circuit, which lifts the same sweet, scooped, and distinct tones found in the ES-345 and 355 of the era. Activating a Varitone setting disengages the pedestrian Tone knob and the way this tone circuit shapes the sound of the guitar is truly astounding. Many of these settings really highlight Chicken Pickin’, with a musical twang and quack, and the often robust and unique nature of these tones really makes the Varitone settings stand out in a mix. The Tremolo is also one of the most pronounced and throbbing circuits we’ve ever heard on a vintage tube amp. The pulse of the trem is strong without being too choppy, and for an effect that essentially is just volume modulation, it really has a three-dimensional quality. The circuit has just been throughly serviced and recapped, and both original transformers are intact. A three-prong power cord has been installed, and the amp has in short been meticulously gone through to retain the integrity and power of this circuit. The original CentraLab pots date to the 20th week of 1960, while the date stamp on the speaker frame is from the 52nd week of 1959. The speaker has as particularly clean frame and original foil label on the magnet bell, and the speaker has just been professionally reconed. Cosmetically, the original tweed and oxblood grillcloth are both intact, with a minty and stock raised “Gibson” logo on the face of the amp. The tweed does show some modest staining and its fair share of scuffs, but overall is remarkably intact (always a rarer feat the larger the tweed amp). All of the stock knobs are present, including the chicken head knobs for Volume and Tone and the dark burgundy caps for the Vari-Tone push-button controls. Some of the original black silkscreen lettering is present on the faceplate as well which has plenty of sheen on the chrome plating. Other original features the original brown rubber feet and the original luggage-style handle with matching “Gibson” logo and tweed material in a lucite frame. The original wooden wedge footswitch is included to activate the Tremolo. This Gibson GA-80T Vari-Tone amp is very original, thoroughly serviced, and a true force to be reckoned with, standing up to the Fender competition of the era with an incredible array of on-board features. Chrome control panel is in very good shape, still shines, little pitting or rust, all graphics still very good condition. The cabinet is original, new rubber feet.
