Vintage Tube Amp

This listing is for a Vintage original 1965 Fender Showman (8-ohm version) amplifier. This model of amplifier was used by pretty much everyone back in the 1960s. Represented historically in photographs you can see that The Beatles had them in Abbey Road studios, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and many more. The amp was Fenders top-of-the-line and most expensive. Its basically a head version of a Twin Reverb, but without the reverb. It sat upon a large 1×15 cab in which the single JBL 15 speaker was mounted to a baffle that was equipped with a tone ring. Reverb would have been achieved by adding a Fender reverb unit to the mix. The cab in the photos is of the same time period but from a Dual Showman, which is a 4-ohm cab, and although it is also for sale, it does not run with this head. Its just there to show the look of the head on a similar cab. This particular head has had some restoration cosmetically but the electronics look to be mostly original, see photos of the inside. The handle, corners, and knobs seem original but the grill cloth and Tolex covering, face plate and piggyback mounts are new. I dont know the amplifiers personal history so Ill just explain what I can. It does turn on and function. I didnt notice any scratchy control pots, but it does appear that the overall volume is a bit low for an 85-watt, all-tube amp. Ive had other Showmans and Twins and know it should be a lot louder. It sounds nice, just not as loud as one would expect. Im not an amp technician or capable of making a judgement call as to whether it is the tubes, biasing, or whatever more elaborate explanation it may be. The tremolo works if you have a footswitch, but I think the intensity has to be turned up about halfway before it kicks in. Speed dial works fine. Anyway, this is all I know, really. Just a nice-looking, partly-restored vintage Showman that may need a visit to an amp doctor for a tune up, but would probably be well worth the extra attention. All sales are final. I have completely gone through the amp and recapped the entire power supply and replaced all the tubes with new or NOS parts. It originally had the old school screw on mic connectors but I have replaced them with locking neutrik parts for 1/4 input. This is about a 30 watt amp using two 6L6 tubes. I built a cabinet for it out of two old 15 Baldwin organ speakers and it gets plenty loud. Anything over about 2/3 volume starts to get muddy. It has a single knob for the tone control. Speaker impedance is changed with the terminals on the back. I did not modify the circuit from stock, I just replaced anything that had failed or was close to failing and changed the input jacks. Here is a Beautiful Vintage Original McIntosh Industrial type MI-200 / A-109 / K-107 Mono Monoblock Tube Amplifier with Power Supply. Amplifier A-109 Part of K-107 Serial Number 554. It comes with M-149H & M-168 transformers and the following tubes 2- 8005, 2- 6BX7, 2- 6AU5, 12AX7 and 12AU7. The MI-200 power supply is D-106 part of K-107 Serial Number 579. It comes with M-147C & M-148A transformers and 4- 5U4 and a solid state 5Y3 as shown. These came out of a Tektronix lab and were in operation until fairly recently. I brought them up slowly on my variac and it passed audio fairly well. There is some minor hum and a little distortion at higher volumes so I’m sure they will need a full tune-up. The power supply AC cord should be replaced as well. This will make a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection. I will also be listing an additional MI-200 Power Supply. Up for sale, a 1973 Sound City 120, new old stock and stunningly clean with the original transparent factory slip cover, extra Sound City badge and a couple accompanying factory tags. From the private collection of revered amp builder Mike Soldano, this Sound City originally surfaced via a buyout of NOS Sound City stock courtesy of Angela Instruments. Produced by Dallas Arbiter in the UK, and perhaps a brand best known for the early career of Dave Reeves before he founded Hiwatt, the Sound City 120 is an absolute powerhouse with a sextet of EL34 power tubes and massive Partridge transformers. This two channel (Normal and Brilliant) design features Standard and Attenuated inputs feeding independent Volume knobs and a global three-band EQ circuit which is entirely active. Unlike the EQ stages of most amps, each EQ knob in this lineup is active, and as you turn up Bass, Middle, or Treble respectively, you add gain precisely to that portion of the frequency spectrum, courtesy of an ECC83 (12AX7) triode attached to each stage in the circuit. It’s a unique system and a powerful sound sculpting tool not found on your conventional Marshall or Hiwatt. Beyond the EQ section the Presence knob governs high-end content at the output stage. The circuit is virtually untouched, and the turret board design retains all of the original mustard capacitors. The sextet of EL34 power tubes comes via a variety of manufacturers (Telefunken, Mullard, and Sylvania among them), yet all tubes were carefully matched and perform beautifully in the circuit. The preamp tubes are the original compliment with clean silkscreen graphics on the glass. Cosmetically, the amp is stunningly clean, and not to say that it hasn’t incurred a couple minor scuffs and nicks on the edges of the cabinet in the last four decades, but as the photos attest, this is an immaculate vintage example. All of the original knobs are intact with their transparent skirts, and the faceplate is clean as can be, accented by silver piping on the face of the enclosure.
