Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Vibroverb in excellent condition, recently serviced and loaded with a vintage JBL 130A speaker. A very original and clean example of Fender’s rarest and most desirable Blackface amp, the Vibroverb was only made in the Pre-CBS Fender era, lasting from late 1963 through’64. Best known for its association with Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Vibroverb delivers 40 all-tube watts with a dual channel design and tube rectifier. The amp is loaded with a pair of vintage JAN/Phillips 6L6 power tubes, and the JBL speaker has been professionally reconed. The tone is clear and powerful, with dynamic Fender cleans that sparkle and twang. The highly efficient JBL speaker keeps the signal and tight, with very little speaker cone distortion even at high volumes, letting the light compression and velvety tube overdrive of the circuit be heard with stunning clarity when you push the amp near 10 on the volume dial. The Reverb has plenty of splash and dimension with a long decay, and the Vibrato (technically tremolo) has a strong, smooth pulse. The circuit is extremely clean and stock, with all of the original Schumacher-made transformers dating between the 7th and 27th weeks of 1964. All of the original CTS pots are intact as well, dating to early’64. The preamp retains its full compliment of original blue molded Ajax caps, a key ingredient of the sweet, musical sound of Fender’s Blackface circuits. The power supply features a professional recap of the main filters, and the smaller bypass caps in the preamp have been replaced too. A three-prong power cable has also been installed. In addition to the pair of properly biased USA-made JAN/Phillips 6L6GC power tubes, the amp is loaded with a Sylvania GZ34 rectifier and a host of new and vintage tubes in the preamp as well, all of which function as intended. The tube chart is intact and very clean, with crisp corners and an “NJ” date stamp for October of 1964. The vintage JBL 130A speaker has a professional recone and proper aluminum dust cap, and this speaker is a particularly early JBL, predating the D130F. The speaker has a full, robust sound with no voice coil rub and incredible articulation. Cosmetically, this amp retains its original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth, with some light edge wear and a few small spots of missing tolex on the bottom edges of the cabinet. The original hardware is all intact, with some scuffing on the original nickel corners, and modest patina on the original Pat. Pending tilt-back legs, sphinx glides, and handle caps. The original two-button Reverb/Vibrato footswitch is included. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely. The speaker will be removed and packed separately due to the weight, ensuring the safest transit for both the baffle and speaker cone and voice coil. Up for sale here is this vintage Philips A3X95A powered speaker, I believe from the late 1950s or early 1960s. This is basically a wood cabinet with a small tube amplifier and a speaker (close to 6×9, possibly alnico) inside. I couldn’t find much about this on the net–it’s apparently pretty rare. It has 3 inputs in the back–an RCA jack and two bi-pin jacks. This is a really neat little powered speaker, and you could use it as a guitar amp with just a bit of tinkering. I brought this up on a Variac, and it does play fine and sounds good. I didn’t hear any noticeable hum or buzzing, but as this is over 50 years old I would strongly recommend recapping and rebuilding it. This uses 3 tubes–an EZ80 rectifier tube, an EL86 output tube, and a 12AX7/ECC83 tube. They are all included, but are untested, though they presumably work, since the amp works. The EZ80 and EL86 appear to be original, but the 12AX7 is a GE, replaced by a previous owner. As far as I know this is original otherwise–I don’t think this was recapped or had other work done. Cosmetic condition is pretty rough. The wood cabinet is in bad condition, and this is missing a knob. The emblem is missing from the upper left, and the grillcloth is torn a bit. The light does work. The power cord has some electrical tape on it and may have been spliced. I would recommend replacing it. This looks pretty cool–it has a nice “rat rod” appearance. This is tested and plays fine, but it doesn’t have a ton of power. This would probably be pretty easy to convert into a guitar amplifier, and I’m sure it would do amazing things. I believe you’d need to add a gain stage, or change things around a bit. This is currently working, but I would strongly recommend rebuilding it. Please see my pictures for details. If you have any questions, please ask. I have a number of other tube items, collectibles, and vintage electronics listed–feel free to take a look!
