Up for sale, a 1958 Fender “High Power” Tweed Twin 5F8-A in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This Twin features a very original circuit, rehoused in an replica speaker cabinet and loaded with a pair of era-correct Jensen P12N alnico magnet speakers. Occupying a very narrow window in Fender’s golden age, the 5F8-A Twin was the pinnacle of Tweed era evolution and unmatched in power and headroom, first available in late 1957 and retired by January, 1960. This example was made in January of’58, and the “High Power” iteration of the Twin is arguably the most highly sought after vintage Fender amp ever produced. A whole different animal than the “Low Power” iteration offered through most of the’50s, the High Power 5F8-A pushes 85 watts via a matched quad of 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes with a single GZ34 rectifier. Essentially the same animal as the 5F6-A Bassman, yet with four power tubes, more massive transformers and a 2×12 speaker configuration, the 5F8-A Twin has all the hallmarks of its Bassman brother, with a Mid control and four-input design, allowing both greater tailoring of the tone and the ability to jumper the channels for additional interactivity and gain. Incredible headroom, touch-sensitivity and rich, textured growl are hallmarks of this Twin. The trebles bite, yet with a smooth, harmonically-rich character, the midrange is gutsy, and the low end is broad and focused, with notable depth that interacts famously with a broad range of pickups. The circuit retains its original Triad transformers, and all of the original yellow Astron capacitors are intact in the preamp. The smaller electrolytics in the preamp have been upgraded with high quality Spragues, and the power supply has been recapped with Spragues as well. All of the original pots are present, and two additional 1/4 jacks have been added to the righthand side of the chassis. The inside of the chassis retains its “HA” date stamp from January of 1958. The tube complement includes a matched quad of Mesa-branded power tubes, with a Ruby rectifier and a couple vintage preamp tubes from the likes of Telefunken and Westinghouse. The speakers are a matched pair of vintage Jensen P12Ns with clean dark green frames and date stamps from’62. The cabinet is a modern replacement, faithfully replicating the materials and size of the original. The faceplate retains its bright chrome plating, and some of the original white silkscreen text is still present, along with all of the chicken head knobs.

Up for sale, a 1979 Sano 300R-12 combo amplifier in exceptional condition and in perfect working order with a complete vintage tube set. Manufactured in New Jersey, Sano is a hidden gem of vintage amp manufacturing. This 2×12 300R-12 comes from the final year of Sano production, just prior to the company’s dissolution in 1980. Tonally, Sano amps are widely considered to be quite balanced, with a relatively flat EQ response, and this 300R-12 is no exception. It’s undeniably beefy and rich, with ample headroom, perfect for articulate, complex chording, and the midrange is warm and harmonically complex. The footswitchable onboard Tremolo has great depth, and the Reverb is lush and atmospheric. This 300R-12 features a dual channel, dual input design, with a polarity switch and Stereo functionality on Channel One. Simple controls include Volume, Bass, and Treble knobs for each channel, with Bass Volume and Treble Volume controls for Channel One. Additionally, there is a knob for the Reverb, with a pair of buttons to engage/disengage the Reverb on each channel, and the Tremolo has Speed and Depth controls (as well as a pair of on/off buttons for the Trem on each channel). The point-to-point circuit is extremely elegant in its construction with high quality components used throughout. The amp has been serviced by our team of techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, with the majority of the original capacitors intact, and original Centralab pots that date to the 9th week of’79. The complete vintage tube complement features a pair of GE 7591 power tubes, a Westinghouse 6CG7, and a preamp section of four GE 12AX7s and one United Electronics (also from New Jersey) 12AU7. The original pair of Fane 12 speakers are present, rated at 4 ohms, and there is a 3/79 date stamp on each frame. Only one speaker retains the original plastic magnet cover. Cosmetic touches include a Sano badge with the later’70s-era block logo, black grillcloth, white piping, and a trio of handles (one on each side and one on top). The original casters are also present. Wear is limited to a handful of faint marks and scuffs on the black tolex; the graphics on the control plate are very clean, including the central atom design, and the original knobs are all intact.

Dates to the 1970s era. See pictures for condition. The amp powers on and is working. The electronics will need cleaning, the pots are scratchy. Reverb and tremolo working. It will need a new Fuse cap, the one on it works but is make/shift. Pretty cool old amp.

Designed to sound as close to the original as possible, the’65 Reissues are assembled in Corona, California and feature Jensen speakers (One C12K for the Deluxe and two C12Ks for the Twin, four P10Rs for the Super and one C10R for the Princeton), Schumacher transformers, traditional tremolo and tube-driven reverb to create that classic, “Blackface” sound so many players desire.
