EICO HF-81 Integrated Tube Amplifier – Restoration Candidate – Working Iron. Some units are plug-and-play. This is not one of them. This EICO HF-81 is a largely original example and should be viewed as a restoration project. The transformers appear healthy, but the amplifier will require electronic servicing for stable, long-term operation. This is for someone who will selectively change parts for stability but retain the sonic character the HF-81 is famous for. Operational Status (Please Read Carefully). Powered up slowly on a Variac. Output transformers pass signal. Video included demonstrating that both channels produce output. One channel is weaker and exhibits distortion. The stronger channel distorts at high volume. Power switch (integrated into treble knob) does not function properly. Unit is likely running on original capacitors. Given its age, full recap and restoration is recommended before regular use. Tube Complement (Installed & Working). The original Eico factory installed tubes tested weak or shorted and were replaced with. Quad Sylvania EL84 / 6BQ5 – New old stock (NOS) and new in box (NIB). Tubes are functional, but the distortion issue suggests underlying circuit components (likely caps or resistors) require attention. Classic gold faceplate with vintage wear. Appears largely unmodified internally (based on current inspection). Why This Is Worth Restoring. The HF-81 is widely regarded as one of the most musical EL84 integrated amplifiers ever made. Properly restored examples command strong market value and are known for. Balanced push-pull EL84 output. Highly respected transformer set. The transformers are the heart of these units – and this one passes signal. Collector seeking original platform for rebuild. If you’re looking for a fully restored, daily-use amp, this is not that listing. If you want a strong foundation with working iron and upside potential, this is an excellent candidate. Will require recap and service. Distortion present in one channel. Power switch requires repair. See video for operational demonstration.

The output transformers are the sough-after Acrosound TO-330 As far as I can tell, they are in original configuration. I hooked them up on a variac, set up to 80v. Both powered up OK. One amp generated hum sound but did pass music through to the connected speaker. The other didn’t produce music nor hum. On this amp, the connected speaker did produce cracking noise as I wiggle the small tubes. So, at least, the output and power transformers are all good. By visual inspection, I can tell they are reasonably nice; no signs of abuse, burn, damage. Shot me any questions and I’ll try to answer. I have other audio equipment, like. Type: Vacuum tube hi-fi components. Condition: Untested / As-Found. Included: Amplifier + Tuner only (no accessories). Stereo (2-channel integrated amplifier). Country of Manufacture: United States. Some machines are built to be used. Others are built to be. This pair belongs to the latter. The EICO HF-32 is a well-regarded integrated tube amplifier from the American hi-fi era, appreciated for its musical warmth, straightforward design, and the unmistakable character that early tube circuits deliver. It is the sound of living rooms where jazz records spun late into the night, where voices came through the air with presence and humanity, not compression. Paired beside it is the EICO HFT-90 FM Tuner, a companion piece that completes the picture – a reminder of a time when radio was not background noise, but an event. Together, they form a visual and historical symmetry that collectors seek but rarely find intact. Look closely and you’ll see the story written in metal and paper: the perforated steel cages, the understated typography, the surviving schematic labels still clinging to the underside like handwritten notes left behind by the engineers who built them. They are the difference between equipment and artifact. This set has not been powered on. Tube audio collectors understand that preservation comes before assumption, that restoration is a personal journey best left to the next steward. What is offered here is honesty – untouched, unaltered, and ready for the hands of someone who understands what they are holding. This is not a shortcut to sound. It is an invitation to history. Professionally packed with care appropriate for vintage electronics. The HF-32 occupies a respected place in EICO’s tube amplifier lineup for a reason. HF-32 is often spoken of in reverent tones for a reason. It occupies that rare intersection of engineering excellence, musicality, and aesthetic restraint that modern equipment rarely attempts. When paired with its matching tuner, it transcends utility and becomes a statement – a moment frozen in the golden age of American hi-fi. Opportunities to acquire a matching EICO amplifier and tuner pair, preserved in this state, do not present themselves often. This is a piece for the collector who values authenticity over convenience, and legacy over immediacy. Collectors familiar with EICO’s lineup will recognize exactly where this piece fits.
