Up for sale, a 1965 Kay Bass Amp model 720 in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. A rare vintage Kay all-tube design loaded with a single 15 alnico speaker, the 720 model is as straightforward and simple as vintage tube amp tone gets. The amp has a single channel with Volume and Tone knobs, and the tube rectified circuit is loaded with the original pair of RCA 6L6GC power tubes which deliver roughly 35 all-tube watts. This is a particularly dark sounding amp even with the Tone control pegged, and as such it’s a viable option for bass tracking in a studio at low volumes for a rumbly and thick sound. With guitar, the amp has a bold roar that overdrives smoothly with churning drive. Put a treble booster or any overdrive with an EQ section in front of the amp and this Kay responds beautifully with extra top end sizzle and dynamic range. The tube compliment, cabinet size, and speaker also lend themselves to a comparison with the Supro Thunderbolt, and it’s a fair comparison, as the two amps have much in common structurally and sonically. The circuit is virtually untouched with original transformers and a two-part chassis design that leaves the preamp mounted to the top of the amp and the power amp located in the bottom of the enclosure. The RCA 6L6GC power tubes sound great and have plenty of life, and the amp boasts a matching RCA rectifier as well. The stock Fisher 15 alnico speaker retains its original cone, with a clean frame and 1965 date stamp on the magnet bell. Cosmetically, the amp is extremely clean and the polished brass faceplate retains the original knobs as well as all of the black silkscreen text. The two-tone brown and blonde enclosure shows very little wear with the original handle, rubber feet present, and raised plastic Kay badge on the grillcloth. It’s as complete and well preserved example as we’ve ever seen of this model, or any vintage Kay amp for that matter! Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely. Here’s what I’ve done. 1 Installed new KTLA25 Authenticaps in the power supplies (increasing filter capacitance for better bass). 2 Upgraded the original 16uf power supply cap to a 33uf 600v solens cap. 3 The amp originally ran EL-37s, but those are out of this world expensive. So, now the amp is set up to run 6L6GCs. To do this, you must change the cathode bias resistors accordingly. I installed high quality Ohmite resistors and now the amp runs 6L6GCs at about 60% of their Max Dissipation=longer tube life. 4 Installed 100ohm screen resistors to better preserve tube life and prevent arcing at startup. 5 The original way to bias the amp required you to use a 1/4 jack connected to your multi meter. When you inserted it to test the MA, you essentially closed the circuit. I’ve installed 10ohm resistors across each jack so that when a 1/4 is inserted, the resistor sees the voltage instead of the partnering tube getting all of it. To bias the amp now, you insert a 1/4 (not connected to your multi-meter), and then measure the voltage across the resistor, and then balance the tubes accordingly. Hopefully that makes sense. It is very important that you take note of this modification before purchasing the amp. 6 Upgraded power cord, which includes a very nice Marinco connector. 7 Replaced the bias pots with high quality CTS pots. 8 All coupling caps (which the signal goes through) have been upgraded to the very, very nice (and semi-expensive) Jupiter Red Astrons. I’m a guitar player and I strongly believe in the tone of caps. These things are killers. 9 I also upgraded some other caps on the board to Obbiligato PIOs. 10 The 12AX7 sockets have been replaced with Belton 9 pins. The originals weren’t in great shape. I stripped it down and repainted it. These cages are rare FYI. That’s a long list, but pretty much, anything I replaced, I replaced with the best quality stuff I could afford. And it really shows in this amp. A Matching quad of Tung Sol 6L6GC STRs (my favorite of new production 6L6GCs). I don’t have a tube tester so I can’t test them, but I do know they have about 1000 hours on them. Should provide service for some time longer. C NOS Hammond Mullard EF86s. These should provide service for quite a big longer too. D Brand new JJ GZ34s. Couple of last notes for prospective buyers. Tube amps require love, care, and maintenance. NEVER turn the amp on before the input sourceyou risk blowing the output transformers by doing so. This amp produces significant heat and should be used in a really well ventilated area. Speaking of heat, I’ve exclusively used this thing with my variac set at 117Vs instead of the normal line (122 in my area). This is HIGHLY recommended. However, it will be in the condition I’ve described; it will be in the condition shown in the photos; it will produce sound and music; and thus it won’t be DOA. FYI, mono switch and monitor gauge button have been disconnected. Link to actual youtube video of the amp from last year. LAST NOTE: I’ve owned two Dynaco ST-70s. It maintains the tube tone, but has much better dynamics and detail. Plus, the actual circuit of the knight is much more stable, using TWO rectifiers at appropriate voltages, whereas the Dynaco destroys new production rectifiers because it just simply works them too hard. This is well documented on the forums. Photos demonstrate the physical condition. I’m in Glendale, CA 91205. Up for sale here is this gorgeous vintage Sears Silvertone 1483 tube amplifier. This is in great condition, with light to moderate wear overall and very light rust/corrosion on the face. It’s not mint, but is definitely in good shape. The cabinet is nice and solid. This has the original Silvertone-badged RCA 6L6GC output tubes, dated 1967, and has the original Silvertone 6CG7 and 5Y3GT tubes. The 12AX7s are vintage US-made, I think GE. Both tube shields are there. This is missing the rear ID badge that would normally be riveted in on the right side. This only has two bolts holding it in from the bottom, and no bolts from the back–I’m not sure why those are gone. The electronics appear to be 100% original–all the caps look like they are untouched. The 6L6GCs are dated 1967, so this amp is from around that year. All the original knobs are there. This has four 1/4″ input jacks on the front and two 1/4″ output jacks on the back. I do not know if this normally has one or two rear output jacks. It has a nice long power cord, and has another cable sticking out of the back. That second cable is shorter, maybe a foot long, and has what appears to be an odd-looking AC plug on the end, but I’m pretty sure it’s an output cable and is not an AC cord. I brought this up on a Variac, and it does play fine and sounds good. I didn’t hear much background noise, just a tiny bit of it in the background. I did clean the 12AX7 sockets and potentiometers with Deoxit, but otherwise I have not updated this or anything. This is tested and working, but because this is a vintage tube amplifier, I would strongly recommend that you recap/restore this before regular use. This is just an amp–there is no speaker cabinet included. Please see all 12 of my pictures for details. If you have any questions, please ask. I have a number of other tube items, collectibles, and vintage electronics listed–feel free to take a look!
