The vintage 1964 Vox AC30 is universally considered one of the most legendary in holy grail amplifiers from the past 50 years – a true British icon! The AC-30 helped define the sound of the British invasion, and remains one of Vox’s most important models – for iconic tone reference.. You can listen to the likes of Brian May, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page & Rory Gallagher (to name a few). This particular amp sounds nothing short of spectacular, it chimes and barks with the incredibly dynamic, touch sensitive responsiveness, smooth tube saturation and glassy clarity that has made this amp one of the most sought after of all time. An additional volume knob has been added internally (to the left of the 1st speaker), which acts as a really cool attenuation feature for when you want those massive tones.. This unit is in very good condition for it’s 50+ years of life, with various minor wear & tear to the exterior including a few scuffs that have been very neatly patched up professionally. The combo appears mostly all original (including transformers), except from 2 upgraded Celestion G12s-50 speakers & a changed logo / tone knob along with potentially changed minor service components. There’s no footswitch included in the sale & I believe the trem/vib effect is not quite functioning right (to my ears) – it’s either on (fast) or off & the speed knob doesn’t currently change the speed.. Though the footswitch might simply be required for this feature to function correctly. VOX AC30 HEAD CLONE PROJECT. I PICKED THIS UP FROM A GUITAR STORE AND THEY DID NOT KNOW WHO BUILT IT. IT WAS IN NON-WORKING CONDITION WHEN I BOUGHT IT, SO I BROUGHT IT HOME, FIXED SOME BROKEN SOLDER JOINTS, REPLACED THE FUSE, REPLACED THE WEBER COPPER CAP RECTIFIER (THOSE SUCKERS NEVER WORK RIGHT ANYWAY) WITH A RUSSIAN GENALEX GZ34 AND GOT IT TO FIRE UP. THIS AMP SOUNDS REALLY GOOD, VERY SIMILAR TO MY 62 AC30, BUT A BIT BRIGHTER (WHICH ISN’T NECESSARILY A BAD THING). PLENTY OF VOLUME AND IT BREAKS UP BEAUTIFULLY. THIS WOULD BE A PERFECT AMP TO GIG WITH SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAUL YOUR PERSNICKETY VINTAGE VOX AC30 AROUND TO GIGS. THE REASON I’M LISTING IT AS A PROJECT IS BECAUSE IT IS OVERHEATING AFTER 5 – 10 MINUTES OF USE. WITH WORK, FAMILY AND OTHER PROJECTS, I JUST DON’T HAVE TIME TO GO THROUGH THE CIRCUIT AND FIGURE OUT WHAT THE ISSUE OR ISSUES ARE. I SUSPECT THAT THE ISSUE IS NOT A VERY DIFFICULT ISSUE TO FIX. THERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL SOLDER JOINTS THAT COULD BE CLEANED UP, BUT OVERALL THE PERSON WHO WIRED THIS AMP DID A PRETTY SOLID JOB ON A FAIRLY COMPLEX BUILD. THE CABINET AND PARTS ARE GOOD QUALITY AND THE FITMENT ISN’T BAD. NICE LEATHER HANDLES AND BRASS VENT COVERS. IT HAS AN INTERNAL SELECTOR FOR 4 OR 8 OHM OUTPUTS, WHICH IS NICE. THE POWER AND PREAMP TUBES APPEAR TO BE ALL JJ TUBES. THE REPRODUCTIONS ARE BUILT IN CHINA WITH PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS, WHICH MEANS THEY ARE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO FIX WHEN THEY BREAK. IT’S A MUCH BETTER INVESTMENT THAN ANY CHINESE REPRODUCTION! NO SPEAKER OR SPEAKER CABINET IS INCLUDED, JUST THE HEAD. LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. OTHER LOCATIONS WILL BE MORE. An excellent original amp in working order but obviously as it is nearly 60 years old it will require minor servicing. All the transformers including the RS choke are original. One or two components have been changed but overall it has been untouched. The footswitch and grill cloth have been changed and it appears the rexine has been painted. It sounds absolutely amazing and the vibro works and sounds great. One speaker is slightly later than the other and both work well with no cone rub. Up for sale, a 1963 Vox AC30 in exceptional condition, complete with “Top Boost” circuitry. This early AC30 sounds nothing short of spectacular, and the clean tone is particularly robust, rich, and nuanced. Few amps sound as classic and familiar as an early JMI AC30, and this example excels with the incredibly dynamic, touch sensitive responsiveness, smooth tube saturation, and glassy clarity that has made this amp one of the most sought after of all time. One of the earliest AC30s we’ve ever had in the shop, the amp head boasts smooth black (pre-basketweave) tolex, brass vents, no corners, and a copper control panel. The list of AC30 enthusiasts is endless, with a story that began with the Shadows and quickly grew to include players such as the Beatles, U2, Queen and countless others. This amp delivers both the detailed cleans and midrange rich tube overdrive that are the hallmarks of the AC30 tone, not to mention providing fantastic vibrato and tremolo on the third pair of inputs! Fully restored, this head has been recovered with smooth black tolex and the cabinet is a new, factory spec reproduction courtesy of North Coast Music with black basketweave tolex. The chrome trolley is also a virtually new modern reproduction, and the cab is loaded with a fresh pair of Celestion Blue alnico speakers. The serial/model # plaque on the back of the head is also newer along with a Korg-era SBU-style handle on top. The Top Boost module is itself the stuff of legend, and this aftermarket module is authentic to the original design, with Bass and Treble controls powered by an additional 12AX7/ECC83 that really helped push the AC30 into new and uncharted tonal territory. Married specifically with the Brilliance inputs, the Top Boost module was reverse engineered from the tone stack of a Fender Twin Reverb and provides a musical and familiar EQ sweep in addition to an extra gain stage that helps coax rich harmonics, incredible cut, and more drive out of the amp. This amp boasts a very original and freshly serviced circuit, with stock Albion transformers. The circuit has been partially recapped, and the preamp features the vast majority of the original Wima tone capacitors. The pots have a “DK” date stamp which translates to April of 1963. The chassis itself is quite clean with a vibrant reddish copper faceplate that retains all of its lettering in addition to original chicken head knobs. A previous owner has also put a few hash marks for specific settings adjacent to a few of the knobs. The amp sports a set of newer JJ EL84 power tubes which sound fantastic and deliver an authentic British tone. The preamp tubes consist of mostly newer valves as well. Cosmetically, you won’t find a more squeaky clean looking amp, and this Vox present particularly well and deserves to be seen on stage or in a studio. This AC30 with Top Boost circuitry is the pinnacle of the Vox sound, and the amp that chimed its way into the hearts of millions on your favorite early Beatles records. Don’t miss out on this gem!
