Up for sale, a 1962 Fender Bassman in excellent condition and in perfect working order. An early iteration of the “Piggyback” version of this amplifier with rough blonde tolex and oxblood grillcloth, this Brownface Bassman drives two vintage General Electric 6L6GC power tubes for 40 powerful watts of pure tube goodness. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brownface circuits respond well to picking dynamics with Fender’s hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a huge range and after around 5 on the volume dial the amp cascades into very rich tube overdrive that compresses noticeably and sounds great. It’s the kind of natural tube saturation that only comes from pushing a well designed Fender circuit to its limit. A Pre-CBS Fender Blonde Bassman was used on more Beatles recording sessions than the Vox AC30, was a particular favorite of Pete Townshend, and has become the amp forever linked with Brian Setzer’s classic Rockabilly tones. It’s hard to beat the Bassman for a tone that bridges the gap between the warmth and nuance of the Brownface circuits and the shimmery cleans of the Blackface line! The circuit is very original and has been well maintained and recently serviced with fresh filter caps and a modern three-prong power cable. All of the famed blue Ajax tone caps are intact in the preamp, with stock Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and cloth wire. All of the Schumacher transformers are original with mid 1962 date codes. The output transformer dates to the 17th week of’62, while the power transformer dates to the 20th week of that year. The tube chart is mostly intact too. The tube compliment includes a pair of vintage General Electric 6L6GC power tubes that have been properly biased, and the preamp tubes are mostly vintage valves as well from the likes of RCA and General Electric. The speaker cabinet is a rare transitional small box design that has the same dimensions as the 1×12 Tone Ring cab that preceded it, along with the internal “fins” on the back panel and a partial central divider on the original baffle. Fitted with a pair of vintage Jensen C12N speakers, these drivers are an optimal pairing for the 6G6B Bassman circuit, and while these speakers aren’t original, they do date to early 1964 and are the same make and model used in many’60s Bassmans. Cosmetically, this is an excellent and well kept example of one of Fender’s most desirable Pre-CBS circuits. Both the head and cabinet retain their original rough blonde tolex and oxblood grillcloth. In terms of hardware, the plastic “dogbone” handle on the head is original, while the handle on the cab is a modern replacement. The original faceplate is intact and quite clean, complete with original white barrel knobs. All other hardware is 100% stock, with original tilt-back chrome legs and stops, sphinx glides (feet), flat metal Fender logos, nickel corners and piggyback clip bars. Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Showman Brownface tube amplifier head and 1×15 Tone Ring speaker cab in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Along with the Twin, the Showman was the flagship of the early 1960s Fender tube amp lineup, featuring a whopping 80 watts of power, and boasting Fender’s unique “Harmonic Vibrato” circuit. While the Showman may best be known as Dick Dale’s amp of choice for his classic surf sound, this circuit can offer much more, with incredibly rich low end and EQ controls that have an extremely wide sweep for everything from punchy cleans to raucous overdrive. The perfect middle ground between the dynamic, saturated tones of the earlier Tweed era amps and the clarity and shimmering cleans of the later Blackface line, this Showman has a very warm and nuanced sound, with absolutely giant transformers that keep the low end thick and focused. Perfect for guitar, bass, or keyboards, this is a versatile head that pairs well with just about anything from the era! Restored to original spec, the head features new rough blonde tolex and original oxblood grillcloth, while the speaker cabinet is a brand new solid pine reproduction from Mojotone fitted with a genuine vintage JBL D130F speaker. One very unique and desirable feature of the Showman is the ported Tone Ring speaker cabinet. This large 1×15 enclosure was designed to deliver the clearest, most pure Fender tone with a stock JBL D140F speaker, and as such utilizes a dual baffle board design in which the speaker floats between the baffles, mounted to a metal tone ring. This elegant design makes the Showman cab work as a closed back, ported enclosure and you’ll notice greater range of your EQ controls, ample bass response and an overall sweeter, balanced tone that you simply can’t get with any other Fender cabinet. Plus it just looks so darn impressive! The circuit has been fully serviced and recapped, with new Sprague Atom bypass capacitors and new filter caps as well, all sleeved in the original Minimite wrappers. The original famed Ajax blue molded tone caps are intact, providing the sweetness, clarity, and balance found with vintage Fender preamps. All of the stock pots and carbon comp resistors are present as well, along with original cloth wiring. The amp boasts a quad of vintage USA-made Tung Sol 5881 (6L6GC) small bottle power tubes as well as a host of vintage valves in the preamp. The original transformers are all intact, with the absolutely massive output transformer often known as the “Dick Dale” transformer, spec’d to be cleaner and more powerful than any Fender transformer that preceded it. The power transformer dates to the first weeks of’63, while the tube chart has an “LG” date code which translates to July of’62. Along with the new rough blonde tolex on the head, all of the hardware is new as well, with modern Fender dogbone handles, chassis straps, and corners. The Showman faceplate is original and fitted with new cream barrel knobs. When Mojotone made the speaker cabinet, they placed the handle in the wrong location, something which has been rectified, and the tolex has been patched to cover the handle mounting holes on the cab for the cleanest possible look. With original transformers, a fully serviced and very stock circuit, a full compliment of vintage valves, and a vintage JBL D130F speaker too, this restored Showman is a Pre-CBS Fender classic. Up for sale, a 1967 Fender Twin Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order. One of the last amps from’67 to retain the Blackface AB763 circuit, this amp has been thoroughly serviced in-house here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and is studio ready. The very original’67 chassis has been matched with a vintage pair of Jensen C12N speakers and a new Mojotone solid pine speaker cabinet with new smooth blonde tolex and gold sparkle grillcloth, reminiscent of Fender’s transitional’64 specs. The tone is full on Blackface power and sparkle with rich cleans that exemplify the kind of clarity and sweetness for which the AB763 circuit is known. The reverb has a particularly lush sound and strong decay, while the tremolo throbs with the best. A perfect platform for pedals and ideal for amplifying everything from a guitar or pedal steel to your favorite Fender Rhodes or vintage combo organ, this Twin Reverb is dialed in to sound its best. The circuit is very original, retaining all of the stock transformers with 1967 date codes, and the CTS pots date to late’67 as well. The preamp has been thoroughly serviced with new Sprague Orange Drop tone caps and smaller bypass caps, and the power amp has been freshly recapped as well to ensure stable, reliable use. The speakers are a matched pair of Jensen C12Ns from early’68. Both of these speakers have been freshly reconed and sound great with tight, focused tone and plenty of power. Cosmetically, this amp is near mint as one would expect, given the brand new tolex and grillcloth on the new Mojotone speaker cab. The faceplate is a new reissue Blackface-style plate paired with all of the original witch hat knobs. The chassis straps are original, while the corners and sphinx glides (feet) are modern. Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Bandmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This Pre-CBS Fender piggyback amp features original smooth blonde tolex and a AA763 circuit, typically only seen on the very first Blackface amps. The rare combination of cosmetics on this amp was only seen from the last months of 1963 through mid-64, and this amp sounds particularly good with the original pair of Oxford 12L6 ceramic speakers. This amp delivers the incredible cleans which are a hallmark of the Blackface tone, with sparkle, clarity and definition unlike any amps before or since. The tremolo has a nice strong pulse, with a wide range of speeds from swampy and slow to machine gun fast chop. The circuit is very clean and original, with the stock Schumacher power transformer dating to late’63 and an era-correct Bandmaster output transformer also produced by Schumacher and dating to early’66. All of the original blue molded Ajax capacitors are intact in the preamp and an essential part of the Blackface Fender tone, while the main filter caps have been upgraded to F&T caps to ensure that the circuit is working optimally. A three-prong power cable has also been installed. The CTS pots date to the 34th week of 1963. In terms of the tube compliment, the amp is outfitted with a vintage pair of General Electric 6L6 tubes which have been properly biased, along with a vintage preamp tube assortment including RCA and General Electric valves. The original tube chart is mostly intact inside the head and, the cab retains the original Oxford 12 ceramic 12L6 speakers with clean black frames and pristine model and date codes. All of the stock cabinet hardware is intact including pat. Pending tilt back legs, corners, jack, sphinx glides and piggyback head inserts. The original smooth blonde tolex shows some scuffs and light signs of wear on the edges of the enclosures. Both the head and cab have new gold sparkle grillcloth and the original pair of raised Fender logos are present. The back panel on the head is a modern Mojotone replacement, and all of the original fiberglass baffling is included in the speaker cab. The power tubes consist of a pair of vintage 6L6s, and in the preamp, this Bassman boasts three original matching RCA branded 12AX7s and a Telefunken 12AT7 phase inverter. The original smooth blonde tolex and gold sparkle grillcloth are intact and quite clean. There is a bit of light staining on the top and sides of the cab, where sap from knots in the pine cabinet has seeped through the tolex, as well as a few small cigarette burns. The faceplate is quite clean with original white barrel knobs. The original chassis straps, corners, and raised”Fender” logo are also intact, along with the piggyback clip bars. The tube chart is completely intact inside the cab too, with a “LJ” date stamp which translates to October of 1962. Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Tremolux in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This is one of the earliest Fender amps to boast a Blackface circuit, and the transitional cosmetics also reflect this amp’s early production run, with smooth blonde tolex and wheat grillcloth! Powered by a pair of NOS RCA 6L6GC power tubes, these vintage USA made valves deliver a sweetness, power, and harmonically rich overdrive at high volumes. Of course the real draw of the Tremolux is its ability to produce those shimmering Fender cleans with rich, balanced tones that work great with a host of effect pedals. The tremolo has a nice, deep pulse as well, with a wide range of speeds. The circuit is very original, and has been properly maintained with the highest quality components. All of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps are intact in the preamp (a huge part of the Blackface sound), in addition to the original pots and cloth wiring. The main filter caps and smaller bypass caps have been replaced with a combination of factory spec Sprauge Atoms and F&T capacitors. All of the original Schumacher transformers are intact, and date to fairly early in’63, and the serial number on the chassis is notable for its very early number, A002XX! The speakers are a pair of era correct Jensen C10Q speakers that sound fantastic with great punch, warmth, and clarity. The speakers date from later in’66, yet are the right wattage and style of speaker seen in a Blackface Tremolux and are a great match for this amp. The tube chart is unfortunately mostly gone from inside the head cabinet, and this is a fairly common occurrence, but thankfully all other date codes on the amp are legible. The original smooth blonde tolex is intact on both the head and the speaker cab, along with the original wheat grillcloth, which has been bleached almost white by decades of exposure to the sun and has some light staining as well. The cabinet has its stock pat. Pending tilt-back legs and piggyback inserts, while the head has the corresponding piggyback clip bars. Both logos on the head and cab are original, and the early Blackface faceplate features the original black skirted witch hat knobs. Overall, this is a very clean and well cared for Tremolux, and the blonde tolex is in truly remarkable shape. Aside from light surface rust on the hardware, a few light scuffs on the enclosures, and some wear along the edges of the faceplate, there’s truly very little to mention about this classic, Pre-CBS Fender amp!
