Up for sale, a 1961 Magnatone Estey “Venus” Custom 480 vintage tube amplifier in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Fully serviced and extremely original with the original Oxford speaker and tweeter pair, this Magnatone is a studio-worthy example. Introduced as Magnatone’s flagship model to replace the earlier Magna Electric 280, the 480 adds tube driven spring reverb to the mix, the inclusion of which coincided with Magnatone’s sale to the Estey company. A true stereo amplifier featuring Magnatone’s legendary varistor powered true pitch vibrato, the Magnatone 480 sports two 12″ main drivers and a pair of 5×7″ midrange speakers as well for a very full and well-rounded tube tone. As the top of the line Magnatone amplifier, the 480 has one of the most complex true point-to-point hand wired circuit every conceived of for a tube amp, featuring thirteen tubes and one transistor. With all of the features on these Magnatones and a price point higher than the Fender Twin of the same era, very few were produced and even less show up on the market, let alone in perfect working order like the one offered here. The tone is just heavenly, with smooth tube breakup and two distinctly voiced channels, each with its own Loudness, Treble, and Bass controls. Add Magnatone’s distinctive sounding reverb on top of that swampy, thick vibrato and you’ve got a sound like no one else on your block. The circuit is freshly serviced, with a few new electrolytic caps as well as a few key swapped components in the preamp to ensure that everything is operating within factory spec. All of the original blue Ajax tone caps are intact in the preamp, and the CTS pots date to the 23rd week of 1961. The stock Schumacher power transformer dates to 1961, and the pair of output transformers have matching date codes from the 39th week of’61. The two primary speakers are the original Oxford 12L5N drivers with extremely clean frames and late’61 date codes. Which date to 1961. The two 5×7 midrange speakers (hidden by the chassis and not typically visible) are also original and still wired via the stock crossover. The cabinet retains the original brown textured bindery cloth, and this fragile covering is notably clean, with very limited wear on the edges of the enclosure. The original grillcloth has plenty of sparkle in the gold sparkle thread, and the original faceplace is nigh flawless with original silkscreen lettering. The faceplate retains a full compliment of stock knobs, and the two tone brown and gold faceplate is also in remarkable shape. The silkscreening is far thinner than Fender amps, so to find a 480 in this condition is quite uncommon in every respect. As Magnatone’s top of the line combo and an amp in production for less than two full years, this 480 is a studio and stage ready marvel, with the rich, three-dimensional vibrato and dynamic tone distinctive to this make and model. For sale is a very nice custom Magnavox 9300 Series Tube Amplifier. Several modifications and upgrades including. RCA inputs in the rear. Covers on output supplies (they just rest on the chassis and are not mounted). Power switch on front. Speaker jacks in rear. Power light / Green colored jewel light. Sturdy wooden base with handles. Four (4) tubes across the back are nice Mullard tubes. No trouble powering a set of large Advents or similar type of period speaker. If you only have one source, you could plug it right in to the amplifier and avoid the use of a pre-amp. I tested with both a pre-amp and a reel to reel player direct and the sound was the same. Note, you’ll want something with a volume control as there’s no volume control on the amp. This was recently serviced and is fully operational. Just changed the light bulb with a new bayonet style bulb. Re-soldered the right input connector. Repainted the wooden base in gloss black and touched up the Berry-colored chassis. Closest color match would be Revlon Baby Berry (I used nail polish to touch up). Amplifier will be professionally packaged to ensure a safe arrival. It will stay attached to the board, but all of the tubes and covers will be removed and packaged separately to avoid any breakage. This is a pair of vintage custom mono tube amplifiers from the 50s. I found each one about 5 years apart from different sources, but the chassis are virtually identical with slight differences in components. Both have Acrosound transformers. One a TO-300, the other a TO-305 which I believe is the same but has an additional 500 ohm out winding. They feature 7N7 front end tubes which are known in the DIY community to be wonderful tubes, basically 6SN7s with a Loctal base. Output tubes are each a matched pair of Gold Lion KT66s. These are plug and play. They have been serviced with essential required components replaced. I have had them playing in my system occasionally for the last year or so and are incredible sounding amplifiers. They will blow away anything you have with a similar topology – in and beyond a pretty modest price range. Put them up against your friend’s fancy boutique ridiculousness high dollar amps and watch their jaws drop. I hope to pass these on to someone who really likes listening to great sounding tube amps and doesnt really want to bother with the rest. 6CG7, (1/2) 12AX7 (260). 2x Oxford 12L5N 12. 2x 5″ or 2x 5×7″. 1959 Magnatone Custom 280 Tube combo amp. The top of the line offering of the late 1950s. Two separate output transformers with true stereo Vibrato. Original Oxford 12L5N speakers. Two 5 speakers also for four speakers total. Plugged in and tested and works. I would not say it was tested by a guitar specialist, but it was tested with a guitar and it did play. Cosmetically the unit is in great vintage shape when compared to other units of this age. This unit was filled with Church Hymns and Christian music from days gone by, telling me that this amp may have lived an easier life than some. Grill looks like it has some dirt on it, was worried it was a water line but the rest of the amp does not show that to be true. Please ask questions if you have any. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE.
