Vintage Tube Amp

Made in England vintage 1970′s Sound City 120B 120 Watt bass amplifier head. This head is a BEAST. Have built a loyal following over the years. He was afraid to plug it into a cabinet for fear that this mighty head might blow the speakers! I have since tested it out, plugging it into a Peavey 4×12 guitar cabinet. To my ear it sounded pretty good, and did not blow any speakers in the cabinet despite its power. Having been in storage for years I’m sure it could use some work. It has six (count’em six) EL34 power tubes providing the 120 watts, three of which of the legendary vintage Mullard EL34 power tubes, which I believe to be the original tubes. Of the 3 additional replacement EL34′s one is a vintage RCA, one a vintage GE and one a vintage Sylvania, all well respected tubes in their own right. All of the preamp tubes are Brimar (again, probably the original tubes). Two Partridge Transformer, which is what these heads originally came with. One does look newer so I don’t know if that might be a replacement. I can see that at least 3 of the pots have been replaced as they don’t match the rest. Some scratchiness in some of the pots. One of the knobs in the front was missing so I replaced that one with a “chicken head ” knob, which is the style of knob used on some Sound City heads. I used to sell a lot of guitar amps on here and in the past I would have taken a head such as this to an amp tech and would have paid hundreds of dollars to have them go through the amp and restore it prior to listing it. I will guaranteee it will power on. The general consensus (from what I’ve read in online threads) regarding these heads is that they could use some mods to improve their sound and playability, although there is some dispute as to the optimum mods that might be performed. Cosmetically this head is (in my opionion) in pretty good shape for a 40+ year old head. One small nick in the front bottom left section of the tolex but otherwise no rips or tears in the original tolex. Some wear in the top tolex and elsewhere. The white plastic “grounding” switch on the left portion of the back panel looks a bit stumpy–I don’t know if there was more there at opne time. I have priced this head taking into account the need for resoration and repair and would be listing it for MUCH more were it already restored. Heres a demo of what this amp sounds like. Made in Torrance, California, by Magnatone/Estey Electronics in very late62, this is an Ariatone 810 amp with a single original Oxford 8 speaker, dating to the 46. The Chicago Telephone Supply (CTS) volume pot is from the 51. My guess is the model name/number refers to an 8 speaker and perhaps 10 watts? This amp requires two 50C5, one 12AX7 and one 12AV6. This is a VERY simple amp offering an adequate clean sound, and an absolutely killer tube crunch that would be welcome in any studio. With the classic Maggie pitch shift vibrato, this would also make a great amp for all you slobbering harp players out there. Youll probably want to upgrade to a grounded plug. GIBSON GA-15RVT VACUUM TUBE GUITAR AMP. This Gibson GA-RVT guitar amp works and sounds great. The amp is used and is approximately 65 years old with normal signs of wear and tear but not any mistreatment. The amp puts out around 15 watts. The circuit was refurbished. New filter capacitors were installed. Out of tolerance resistors were replaced. All capacitors in the signal path were replaced with modern and fresh capacitors. Everything is there with the amp such as the original working foot pedal, working reverb and tremolo, a new 10″ “Real Vintage speaker that was a major improvement over the original, worn-out factory speaker. The tolex is heavy-duty and shows some normal wear for a 60+ year-old amp. The handle was built to last and is very robust. The back brace is missing as well as the insert on the on/off knob. All the vacuum tubes are US made except one and all tested and sound great. This amazing amp works anywhere in the world, as it has a voltage selector. The prices for these amps, mine or others, will only increase in the future. They will NOT get cheaper. So if you are waiting, you are waiting for nothing, my price now is already higher than the one a month ago. SUPERB vintage VOX amp, good working condition, biased correctly etc, SOUNDS GREAT. This amp has the multivoltage type of transformer, and it thus can be used anywhere in the world. They don’t make them like this anymore…. Mullard caps, turret board, top notch workmanship, dual bias pots,’overrated’ transformers (meaning they have been built with higher specs than really needed) etc. Recapped (this has to be done every 20 years or so, or the amp’s sound will degrade and noise will increase). It has also been revalved and biased correctly. I will include all the original caps. This amp will do ANY STYLES superbly, from Chuck Berry to Gilmour to Hendrix to Clapton to AC/DC to EVH and beyond. If crank it up and you give it a decent boost, you will hear the most roaring metal sound to be found anywhere. None of that wasp in the jar, fizzy and thin preamp distortion….. This is how a guitar would sound during the 1970′s. Crank it up and be astonished at the wonderful harmonic crunch and notes so thick you can cut with a knife. In one or two pictures it looks like theres a lot more rust than there really is, it is mainly oxidation. It looks a lot worse in the pics than it is in reality. The amp will be EXPERTLY packed. Leave it to me and don’t worry about a thing. Of course, the amp will be sent fully tracked and insured. I leave nothing to chance. Made in England 1989 (inspection sticker on side of chassis dated “20-1-89″) AOR Series Pro-50 50-watt Tube head. These are great sounding, well built heads, similar in. Design to Marshall, their British counterparts. Founded in the 1960′s by Lyndon Laney (who used to jam with Robert Plant and John Bonham) they are. Not as well known as Marshall but they built a loyal following over the years including Tommy Iommi (for whom they built a special model/series) Randy Rhoads, Vinny Moore, George Lynch, Ace Frehley, Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons, George 5 and Joe Satrianni. This should speak of their quality. I could see why as this is a more versatile amp, with a push-pull boost knobs on the bass, middle and treble knobs and also on the preamp knob. No tears in the tolex, minor wear, one foot missing and a little waviness in the label behind the pre-amp knob but overall in great shape for a head that is over 30-years old as the prior owner took excellent care of it. Additionally, in full disclosure the potentiometer shaft on the preamp knob was broken at some point in the past about halfway out. I was able to insert a shim into the knob and screw it down and the knob turns smoothly and functions properly including the push-pull feature. The tubes have not been changed for years as they sound fine and make no microphonic noise. After you receive it. I did open this amp up to spray out the potentiometers and took some pics while I was in there. See how nice and clean it is inside and h. Ow clean the Sovetek 6550WA and ECC883 preamp tubes are with plenty of silver left on top. Hard to date these amps based on serial numbers but these are known to be 80′s amps and the “Skot” output tranformer has a “89″ date code. The head could be more recent but (with some exceptions) amplifier manufacturers don’t usually stockpile a lot of transformers so the amp was most likely built in 1989. I also have a matching cabinet listed separately. Will pack well in a guitar box. Note my +1000 perfect feedback so you do have the option of returning.
