Why Small Tube Amps Are Better
Saturday, December 25th, 2021Fender Vibro Champ Reverb Vs Pro Jr Why You Need A Small Tube Amp
Tuesday, November 30th, 20211955 Fender Deluxe Tweed Small Box Narrow Panel Vintage Tube Amp 5E3 Circuit
Thursday, September 2nd, 2021Up for sale, a 1955 Fender Deluxe in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This first-year iteration of the narrow panel 5E3 Tweed-era circuit has the distinctive “small box” cabinet seen only on Deluxes produced in’55, notably more compact than the cabinets used from 1956-60 and significantly rarer. Few circuits are more desired and emulated than the narrow panel Tweed 5E3, and this amp delivers everything you’d expect from a classic and well cared for amp from the last iteration of the Tweed line. Incredibly dynamic and harmonically rich, the Deluxe can be glassy and clear at low volumes, but for most players the magic is in this amp’s overdrive capabilities. Especially when connecting the two channels with a small jumper 1/4 cable, the interactive pair of Volume controls can dial in everything from fully saturated roar and snarl, to the particular sweet buzzy qualities with ideal midrange bite that you often times can’t coax out of any other Tweed circuit. This amp reacts well to a host of effects pedals and different guitars, but truly shines with the guitar plugged straight into the amp, using your volume knob to coax clean rhythm tones and singing leads with the twist of a knob. The circuit is extremely original, boasting both stock Triad transformers. The amp has been freshly serviced by our techs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with new Sprague Atom filter caps and smaller electrolytics. The amp is loaded with red Astron-style modern Jupiter caps in the preamp, with two newer CTS pots and one original Stackpole pot which dates back to the 51st week of’54. The Stackpole Tone pot also retains its original yellow Astron capacitor and distinctive “domino” Cornell Dubilier resistor. Tubes include matched RCA 6V6 power tubes, a vintage 5Y3 rectifier and one vintage RCA preamp tube paired with a complimentary modern Groove Tubes-branded valve. The speaker is the original Jensen P12R alnico 12 driver with a recent recone. This speaker dates to the 31st week of’55 and retains the original Jensen foil label on the magnet bell as well as the speaker harness with cloth-covered wire and stock 1/4 input. The tube chart is intact with a handwritten serial that matches the chassis and an “EH” date stamp which translates to August of 1955. The chassis itself retains the identical “EH” stamps. The chrome on the chassis is incredibly clean, shining like few Tweeds still do with all of the original white text present along with stock chicken head knobs. The original tweed shows deep ambering and some light wear on the enclosure edges. The original oxblood grillcloth with gold stripe is also intact and in great shape. The leather handle is a modern replacement, and the back panels are custom made to fit the unique small box cabinet, both featuring new tweed aged to match the otherwise original covering on the cabinet. The stock badge on the amp’s face simply says “Fender, ” a holdover from the earlier Tweeds before the longer “Fender Deluxe” badge that would be seen in subsequent years. 1955 Fender Princeton Tweed Small Box Vintage Class A Tube Amp 5E2, 1×8 Jensen
Sunday, May 9th, 2021Up for sale, a 1955 Fender Princeton in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This narrow panel Tweed amp is the particularly rare “small box” example only offered in 1955, with a more compact enclosure identical to the Champ. The flawless tube chart and matching two digit P00057 serial stamped on the chassis speak to the early nature of this model, being the 57th narrow panel Princeton ever produced. The original tweed is uniformly ambered and very well-kept, and is one of the rarest and most unique golden-age Fender amps to come through our shop of late. The circuit couldn’t be more simple and pure, with single Volume and Tone knobs and a Class A circuit design, powered by a single 6V6 power tube. The tone is articulate, dynamic and commanding, with the sizzle and churning overdrive of a Champ, but greater ability to sculpt the tone. The top end response is just right, and the amp doesn’t get too trebly, with a nice wooly warmth and reconed original Jensen 8 speaker, making the Tone control quite usable and giving the circuit the ability to handle ample low end without sounding loose or over-burdened. The circuit is 100% original, with untouched solder joints save for a substituted era-correct two-prong power cable The circuit retains its original Triad transformers, and the original Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and red “dynamite” Astron capacitors are intact. Visible codes on the Stackpole pots dat3 to the 43rd week of 1954. All of the original caps both in the preamp and power supply are still functioning as intended, a testament to the longevity of Fender’s amps and component choices. The tubes are all vintage valves include a vintage RCA 5Y3, Hytron 6V6 power tube, and a UK-made 12AX7. The speaker is original and a particularly rare alnico Jensen, stamped “EE” just to the right of the magnet, matching the identical stamps on the chassis and tube chart. The tube chart is notable for its well-preserved condition, with perfect corners, handwritten serial number, and “EE” date stamp which translates to May of 1955. The tweed is 100% original with light, uniform ambering, and some minor staining below the grillcloth, attributable to “bleed out” from the original rivets pinning the tweed. There are also two small holes on the upper back panel from a removed, non-original cable wrap. The original leather handle is intact and incredibly clean, as is the gleaming chrome faceplate with original silkscreen text and chicken head knobs. This amp is a true rarity given its condition, and this particular example has been carefully tested and inspected to ensure originality and ideal functionality.
