1963 Fender Bassman 6G6B Blonde Brown Panel Vintage Piggyback Tube Amp, Oxfords
Tuesday, December 14th, 2021

Up for sale, a 1963 Fender Bassman in excellent condition and in perfect working order, featuring the original matched pair of Oxford 12M6 speakers. An early iteration of the “Piggyback” Bassman with rough blonde tolex and wheat grillcloth, this Brown Panel-era Fender drives two Sovtek 5881 (6L6GC) power tubes for 40 powerful watts of pure tube goodness. Like the Tweed amps that preceded it, the Brown Panel circuits respond well to picking dynamics with Fender’s hi-fi, glassy clean tones. The EQ controls have a huge sweep, and after around 5 on the Volume dial the amp cascades into rich tube overdrive that compresses noticeably and is particularly roaring and thick. It’s the kind of natural tube saturation that only comes from pushing a well-designed Fender circuit to its limit. A Pre-CBS Fender Blonde Bassman was used on more Beatles recording sessions than the Vox AC30, was a particular favorite of Pete Townshend, and has become the amp forever linked with Brian Setzer’s classic Rockabilly tones. It’s hard to beat this particular Bassman circuit for a tone that bridges the gap between the dynamic grit of the Tweed circuits and the shimmery cleans of the Black Panel line. The circuit is very original and has been well-maintained and recently serviced with fresh F&T filter caps. A few new smaller electrolytics in the preamp, and a modern three-prong power cable. All of the famed blue molded Ajax capacitors are intact in the preamp, an essential part of the sweet, musical character of Fender’s Brown Panel circuits. With stock Stackpole pots, carbon comp resistors, and cloth-covered leads. All of the Schumacher-made transformers are intact, with date codes that span late 1962 and early’63. The tube chart is intact inside the head cabinet. The tube complement includes a pair of Sovtek power tubes that have been properly biased, and the preamp tubes consist of a combination of vintage and modern valves. The cabinet retains the original matched pair of Oxford 12M6 speakers, with date stamps on the edges of the frames from the 43rd week of’63. Both speakers also boast professional recones, ensuring a particularly clear sound with refined, tight bass response. The cabinet is missing its internal central divider, of virtually no sonic consequence. Both the head and cabinet retain their original rough blonde tolex and wheat grillcloth. The tolex exhibits some various marks commensurate with age, with a couple spots of light staining where sap in the knots of the pine cabinet has made its way through the tolex. Both flat Fender logos on the head and cab are original, and the clean faceplate retains its full set of cream barrel knobs. The hardware includes the original piggyback clip bars, nickel corners, sphinx glides, and tilt-back legs, with a new pair of leg stops. The dogbone handle on the head is original, and the one on the cab is a modern Fender replacement. 1965 Fender Bassman Black Panel Piggyback Vintage Tube Amp Head & 2×12 Cab AA165
Saturday, October 16th, 2021

Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Bassman head and matching 2×12 cab in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This vintage Black Panel Fender amp is very original, and the grillcloth on the head and cabinet is among the nicest we’ve seen. For clarity, warmth, and headroom, this Bassman excels at delivering sweet and articulate Fender clean tones. Once you reach about 5 on the volume dial, the circuit starts to overdrive smoothly and compress a bit, for a raw, thick sound that’s perfect for guitar or bass. It’s a simple and pure vintage Fender “piggyback” head and cab setup that provides a perfect platform for effect pedals and is ready for stage and studio use. Arguably the circuit available for the briefest period of time in the Black Panel era, the AA165 circuit designation is seen on many tube charts (Leo Fender was never one to waste anything), but under the hood, the actual AA165 circuit was only seen for a number of months in’65 before transitioning to the AB165 that would be seen through 1968. This amp is one of few to retain the original AA165 guts. The circuit retains all of the original transformers which date to early 1965 along with the CTS pots and chassis stamp. Both the preamp and power amp have been thoroughly maintained, with new Sprague Atom main filter caps and smaller Mallory caps in the preamp to ensure that the amp is operating within original factory spec. The amp features a modern three-prong power cable as well. On the inside of the head cabinet, the original tube chart is present with an “OG” date stamp which translates to July of 1965. The speaker cab is loaded with a pair of vintage Utah 12 speakers. These speakers are detailed, clear, and quite punchy, overdriving with very rich and balanced overtones. Tested against vintage pairs of Oxfords and Jensens, these Utahs were a surprise favorite, and the original black frames are quite clean, retaining the blue foil Fender labels on the magnets. Cosmetically, this is a clean and well cared for Bassman with original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth. All of the original hardware is present, including the tilt-back chrome legs, nickel corners, handles, sphinx glides (feet), and raised Fender logos. The original faceplate is also quite clean and complete with original witch hat knobs. There’s a bit of patina on the hardware, and some expected scuffs and minor wear around the edges of the enclosures, but as the photos show, this Bassman presents very well and would look great in a studio collection. This Bassman is clean, complete, and works exactly as intended for delivering powerful Fender cleans and thick overdriven textures. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely. 1968 Fender Bassman Vintage Tube Amp Head Silverface Drip Edge, Serviced
Monday, September 20th, 2021

Up for sale, a 1968 Fender Bassman head in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This clean and well maintained vintage Fender head has transitional “drip edge” aluminum trim and an early Silverface faceplate, as well as the AA568 circuit. Recently retubed and biased with a pair of Sovtek 6L6 power tubes, this amp has a clear, powerful Fender tone that’s ideal for use with guitar or bass. The perfect platform for players who use a variety of pedals, the Bassman delivers a robust and dynamic tone, and after around 5 on the Volume dial the amp starts to push into smooth, lightly compressed tube overdrive. The circuit features original Schumacher transformers that both date to 1968, along with original CTS pots which also date to’68. The circuit features a professional recap of the power supply, as well as a new bias capacitor and a couple new caps and resistors in the preamp to ensure everything is operating within original factory spec. An additional knob was at one time added to the faceplate and subsequently removed, filled with a clean chrome plug. A three-prong power cable has been installed as well. The chassis itself is quite clean, with a stunning silverface faceplate, turquoise lettering, and original black witch hat knobs. The original tube chart is also present inside the head cabinet, with only the light wear on the top left edge. The original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth with turquoise stripe are intact and in great shape, and the stock aluminum trim is present as well. The stock corners, handle caps, and sphinx glides (feet) are also intact, while the piggyback clip bars are no longer present. Cosmetically, there is very little wear to report, with a few tiny scratches near the input jacks and a light scuff or two on the enclosure, but as the photos show, this is an extremely clean and well cared for vintage Fender Bassman head! Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! 1964 Fender Bassman Black Panel Piggyback Vintage Tube Amp Pre-CBS AA864 Circuit
Wednesday, September 1st, 2021

Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Bassman head and matching 2×12 speaker cab, recently serviced and very original. This vintage Pre-CBS “Black Panel” Fender amp features the AA864 circuit, the earliest and most coveted circuit used throughout this era of production. It’s a simple and pure vintage Fender “piggyback” head and cab setup that provides a perfect platform for effects pedals, and is ready for stage and studio use. It’s worth noting that with Black Panel Bassmans, three distinct circuits were used, and more often than not the circuit noted on the tube chart isn’t the same as what’s “under the hood, ” yet with this particular Bassman it does indeed come as advertised and is a true AA864 model. All of the original blue molded Ajax capacitors in the preamp are intact, and these caps are an essential part of the sweet and musical sound of the Black Panel amps. Both the main filter caps and smaller bypass caps have been replaced with high quality Spragues to keep the amp operating within original factory spec. The stock CTS pots date to between late 1963 and early’64, and the stock Schumacher transformers at the heart of the amp also date to 1964. On the inside of the head cabinet, the original tube chart is present. The tubes consist of a pair of properly biased Sovtek 5881 (6L6) power tubes, along with a host of modern preamp tubes from Electro Harmonix. The speaker cab is loaded with a pair of era-correct ceramic magnet Oxford 12T6 12 drivers, and these speakers have both recently been professionally reconed and feature bronze frames. Oxfords provide a very balanced and warm tone for Black Panel Fenders, and this pair keeps the bass response rich and dynamic, offering a sound both tight and warm with sparkling trebles. Cosmetically, this Bassman retains the original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth on both the head and speaker cabinet. The grillcloth has darkened significantly on the head and cab, and all of the original hardware is present including Pat. Pending tilt-back chrome legs, nickel corners, handle caps, sphinx glides (feet), and the stock pair of raised Fender logos. The faceplate is complete with original witch hat knobs and retains the Fender Electric Instrument Co. Text indicative of a Pre-CBS Fender amp. This Bassman is complete, recently retubed, and works exactly as intended for delivering powerful Fender cleans and thick overdriven textures. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! 1973 Fender Bassman 50 Vintage Silverface Tube Amp with 2×15 Speaker Cabinet
Wednesday, July 7th, 2021

Up for sale, a 1973 Fender Bassman 50 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The direct descendent of the “Bassman” model, the Bassman 50 was introduced in 1972 to differentiate it from Fender’s expanding Bassman lineup (including the Bassman 100 and Bassman 10). This amp has a clear, powerful Fender tone that’s ideal for use with guitar or bass. Delivering enough headroom, muscle, and clarity to be a perfect pedal platform when paired with the included 2×15 enclosure, the amp stays clean until around 5 on the Volume dial when it cascades into smooth, lightly compressed tube overdrive. The circuit is very original, with a preamp that’s untouched save for a new resistor on the bias pot. The original compliment of Schumacher-made transformers date to 1973, and visible date codes on the CTS pots also date to’73. The power supply has been recapped, and the amp functions as it should, with some surface rust on the bottom of the chassis. The amp boasts a full vintage tube compliment, with 6L6s that bias well together (branded Magnavox and GE), and preamp tubes from the likes of RCA. The tube chart is also intact inside the head cabinet. The speaker cabinet is the correct 2×15 used on both the Bassman 50 and Bassman 70 models, dating to 1975. The cabinet is extremely clean, complimenting the head well and loaded with the original Utah-made speakers with heavy duty square ceramic magnets, blue foil Fender labels, and dates on the edges of the frames from the 39th week of’75. Both the head and cab retain their original tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth, with the earlier turquoise stripe on the head and orange stripe on the cabinet cloth. All of the original hardware is intact including the corners, handles, and casters. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
