Blackstar wanted to produce a range of heads and combos, that were the lightest available while still retaining the essential element found in traditional valve / tube amps. Lightweight amps with no trade-off in performance and tone are something guitarists have been requesting for ages making it the forefront during the design process of the new ST. Thus making them the lightest valve amps in the world. James Series In Detail. James heads and combos are highly versatile amplifiers suited to a wide range of playing styles and situations. Channel I, all models. The valve/tube gain structure and voicing of this channel have been inspired by classic American amplifiers of the mid-’60s (Fender’black-face’). It is very clean and bright but with a solid low-end and controlled mids. Also, on this channel, the valve/tube power stage is set to be tight and relatively clean, and linear across the frequency range. This is one of the most popular choices for a’pedal platform’ as it provides a solid clean foundation to apply effects to. Channel II for 6L6 model. On 6L6 models this increases the gain into the valve/tube overdrive section pushing the saturation available from the GAIN II control even further. This is great for fluid’legato’ lines and sweep-picking techniques as well as aggressive alternate picking. On these models the power stage is tight with VOICE off and reconfigures to a looser, more resonant response with VOICE on, to provide the low end’chug’ of modern high gain amps. When the footswitch is connected then this switch is bypassed but the LED will still indicate the VOICE status. As with all Blackstar products the St. James amplifiers are designed for maximum reliability. All the amplifiers are thoroughly endurance tested on automatic test equipment to replicate many hours of real-life use in a few days of laboratory testing. CAB RIG is Blackstar’s next-generation DSP speaker simulator and begets a fundamental shift in the accessibility of professional recording and performing. Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Bassman head, freshly serviced and in excellent condition. Featuring the AB165 circuit, this amp delivers the rich and powerful tones associated with the Black Panel sound, and the cleans are robust and detailed. Pushing the amp past around 5 on the Volume dial of either channel coaxes shades of overdrive out of the circuit, with moderate compression and plenty of crunch and bite when diming the amp out. Perfect for guitar or bass, this amp is also an excellent pedal platform. The circuit is very original with stock Schumacher transformers (Fender’s primary transformer supplier in the Black Panel years) dating between 1964 and’65. The power amp has been professionally recapped, and the preamp has new electrolytic caps as well, ensuring reliable performance. The preamp retains a number of the original blue molded Ajax tone caps that are an essential part of the Black Panel era’s sweet, musical character, and a few Sprague Orange Drops have also been installed. The CTS and Stackpole pots have visible date codes that span late 1964 and early’65. The power cable has been upgraded to a modern three-prong variety. The tube complement includes a pair of matched Ruby 6L6s, with a Mojotone-branded phase inverter and three original RCA-branded preamp tubes. Present inside the head cab, the stock tube chart is present, with a “OH” date stamp which translates to August of 1965. While the tube chart touts the “AA” version of the Bassman circuit, the amp is wired for the “AB” configuration, which is extremely common in 1965-66, as the AA circuit was short lived and Fender used up all their remaining tube chart stock. Cosmetically, this amp is very clean, with original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth. All of the original hardware is present including the chrome piggyback clip bars, chassis straps, nickel-plated corners, handle caps, and sphinx glides (feet), and the hardware shows only light surface patina. The faceplate is in great shape, and all of the original witch hat knobs are intact.
