Vintage Sherwood S5000 Series I Tube Amp with Telefunken Tubes- Completely Updated

For Sale Vintage Sherwood S5000 Series I Tube Amp w/ Telefunken Tubes – Completely Updated. As I have stated previously, I think the S5000, both the first and second iterations, are some of the most underrated integrated amps out there. This must be the 5th or 6th I have located and have completely updated. All have turned out EXCELLENTLY. They are just an almost perfect vintage tube amp. Easy to work on. All the control you would need. They are smaller than most integrateds which can be a big help sometimes. This is perhaps the cleanest one I have seen in a long time. Just look at it! Even the faceplace is pretty darn good and those things are delicate. NOTE – If you ever clean the faceplace do so GENTLY, the lettering and paint on these is very easy to damage. This one is also noteworthy for the tubes that it is configured with. All of the 12ax7′s are 1959 Telefunken small diamond. All have been tested and all are within specs. This example is about as good as it gets. Controls are solid and quiet. Amp itself is very musical. Plenty of power for any efficient speakers. I had them hooked up to some 1959 University speakers and it sounded WONDERFUL and plenty loud. But MAKE SURE it has enough power for your needs (nominally this is a 20/20 wpc amp). NOTE – DOES NOT COME WITH A COVER. Most of these don’t have them as they were often console pulls. This went through a thorough, but respectful, upgrade. All the stupid or dangerous! Stuff was taken care of but the general nature of the unit was kept intact. Note, I never just say “recapped” or “updated” I tell you EXACTLY what was done. And my tech is top notch and only uses parts he likes and trusts. 5 1959 Telefunken small diamond 12ax7′s. 2 7199 matched vintage Sherwood. 1 5AR4 vintage Sherwood (I think). 4 New Russian 6p14p-EV Power tubes. All tubes are labeled for gm values. (LONG DESCRIPTION OF THE WEIRD BAR ON THE BACK- Short version, it is no longer connected/necessary). On power up the amp failed to hold steady AC voltage. Issue was traced to a faulty current limiter that appears to be a add on from the past. Was unable to get accurate readings as the switch bar has lost it’s ability to remain in the closed state due to years of on/off cycles. I don’t believe this was a OEM Part from Sherwood. I found no supporting photos on any S5000 models or any info per Service manuals to prove the item was OEM. This amp is equipped with a 5AR4 TUBE rectifier that has a built in slow turn on /current limiting feature so we really have no need at all for this added after market current limiter. However, We do have 3 holes. In this location and was for something. My guess would be the S5000 Very early models might have been equipped with a hum pot for the 9 tubes running AC filaments However, I as well believe this designed could have been canceled in favor of a center tap on this AC filament line. The holes resemble ones used on the early Sherwood 1000′s For a balance pot. At the end of the day I will leave it up to who-ever wants to research this matter. And come to his or hers conclusion. This added part was removed and AC was wired direct to main power fuse. Tightened fuse holder nut, re-flowed bad solder joints All electrolytic capacitors were replaced. One new 30 ohm 5 watt resistor replaced the original 45 ohm in the bias and phono tube filament section to retain spec voltage. All Pots and Switches was cleaned, flushed and lubed. All power rail voltage retained within service manual specs The amp was equipped with 4 New Russian 6p14p-EV Power tubes. Balanced current matched pairs. We now arrive at our safe 70% rule. All audio inputs and outputs was audio signal tested for 2hrs. All pots and switches function as should. A really great sounding amp that will provide trouble free enjoyment for many years to come. 1 CE 404X2 / 20X2 525VDC MULTI CAP. 1 ORIGINAL SHERWOOD CAP REBUILT. 50uf / 150uf / 250uf 50v. 1 original multi-cap sections wired. MOD 20uF 500v / UC 22uf 450v. 1 UC 4.7UF 450V. 1 MOD 50UF 100V. 1 30 ohm 5 watt. (2 resistor term strip N/C). Vintage Sherwood S5000 Series I Triode Strapped Tube Amp Completely Updated

For Sale Vintage Sherwood S5000 Series I Triode Strapped Tube Amp – Completely Updated. This one is a bit different in that it came to me configured in a Triode Strapped config. In talking with my tech we decided to leave it that way. If you know and understand the conversations around Triode strapping, read ahead, otherwise I would strongly suggest you do some outside reading. There are ALOT of opinions out there as to the pro’s and con’s. Here’s what I have to say, this amp sounds AMAZING. Has a very balanced sound. I REALLY like it, I was kind of surprised just how good it sounds. NOTE – As I understand it, Triode Strapping costs some WPC. This was NOT a high WPC amp to begin with, probably around 20-22 WPC. So take that into consideration. You will need to be using this with fairly efficient speakers. I had them set up with a pair of vintage Dynacos and it had plenty of power. Cosmetically this unit is in really good shape. There is a little spotting on the inside frame (pictured) and one of the left push buttons is not original (the top one). The faceplate is in really good shape. NOTE – These are DELICATE, many of them have much of the lettering and paint worn away. If you clean it at any point DO SO GENTLY. The 7189′s are matched vintage RCA. The 5AR4 is a vintage GE (I think). The 7199′s are matched vintage Sherwoods. Here’s a detailed summary of the work done. Basic bench test showed No issues in main or output transformers. X3 can capacitors will be replaced as will small caps. Stock rectifier was faulty and unable to provide correct stable bias voltage and filament voltage provided to 2 12ax7 tubes. Wired in series for pre section. Stock rectifier was removed and replaced with 1N4007 diodes and a 3/4 watt pot for adjustable Neg. Pots and slide switch was checked and are in working order. The two rotary switches was lubed as was the three push button switches. All tubes was tested and shows marked value on tube top. The power transformer was missing all 4 washers on the main transformer bolts. These washers are needed or the bottom holding buts will slip through the chassis hole. Power rail voltage tested and retained service manual specs Power tube bias was set to -20v. Running 430 plate voltage, Amp was tested for audio signal on all inputs and outputs and showed no issues. Listening test passed with flying colors, 100%. This amp was bought in with power tubes. Strapped, I was asked to leave in this config. Beside the wires it’s labeled BU-1. BR-2 this is,,,, BLUE 1, BROWN 2 One and two are for the power tube numbers that these wires go to on 7189 tube pin 9 They are clearly marked as well. The above is for one channel only and will need to be repeated for the other channel. 1 CE MULTI CAP 40/40/20/20uf 500v. 1 original can cap stuffed 250/150/50uf 50v. 1 original can cap stuffed 20/30 400v. 1 Standard UC 4.7uf 350v. 1 Standard UC 50uf 100v. 1 5 WATT 56 ohm resistor. 1 3/4 watt 50k pot. That should cover it. This is a great amp, sounds great, now in great shape, and is probably the only Triode Strapped S5000 out there. So kind of weird as well. A Special Amplifier for a Special Discriminating Owner. This McIntosh MC275 is from the 1960s and has been played and treated with the utmost care during its lifetime so far. One would be hard pressed to find another example in as lovely a condition as this amp. It has just now undergone a complete restoration from the countrys premier McIntosh Factory Restoration Center, Absolute Sound Laboratories in Minnesota www. Their work is not only electrically perfect but, as the last three photos in the series show, executed with exceptional craftsmanship and beauty. Absolute Sound Labs has been an authorized McIntosh Service facility since 1969. Recently, McIntosh has limited their own in-house factory servicing of older tube and early solid-state equipment. Absolute Sound Labs was selected as one of a very limited number of McIntosh Service Clinics to handle these issues. Absolute Sound Labs is proud to be so highly regarded by the McIntosh company. We have the necessary technical information, parts and test equipment to restore your McIntosh equipment to like-new condition. A detailed description of their restoration process is presented on their website and includes. Removal of any non-factory modifications to restore the equipment to the condition it was initially designed so that a restoration can be started. Replacement of all electrolytic capacitors with Panasonic FC Gold or Nichicon UUV or UUW, 105 degree devices. Replacement of all coupling capacitors with Panasonic or Secor metal, poly type capacitors. Replacement of all compensating capacitors with Panasonic, Nichicon or Secor Polyfilm devices. Replacement of active semiconductors, where applicable, with new, updated OEM style devices. These devices are specified by several design engineers, such as James Bongiorno, who have experience in the design of audio equipment. Replacement of any other devices deemed to be out of specification. All circuit boards are cleaned of excess rosin and contaminates using industrial grade printed circuit board chemicals to insure the best possible operation of the circuitry. The complete interior is cleaned to remove dust and other collected matter. All mounting screws, where electrical conduction is used, are replaced with new screws to eliminate any possible or intermittent circuit problems caused by oxidation or other contaminates. All applicable adjustments, i. Balance, offset and bias are set to applicable factory specifications where applicable. All cosmetic parts are removed and cleaned, using an ultrasonic cleaning process and/or various, special, industrial cleaning products. Where applicable, panel assemblies and cabinets are sealed in a commercial ultra-thin, clear, unique Hydrophobic Polymer compound to insure that additional deterioration of lettering and detail is minimized. The unit is then re-assembled and all functions are verified to ascertain full functionality. The unit is then placed into a burn-in period which varies from 24 to 48 hours, depending on the type of equipment. Certain equipment is also operated on our Cycler for more intensive burn-in. After burn-in the equipment is then re-assessed to insure that all adjustments and alignments are correct and have not changed. In both operations all replaced, defective parts and a detailed explanation of the work performed are supplied to the Client for the Client’s inspection and review. The technician who restored this amp commented that this is the nicest, cleanest MC275 hed seen in years and that hed rate it a 9/10. There is the normal deterioration of the chrome along the creases in the metal chassis that plagues all Mac amplifiers of this vintage, some lettering on the rear panel has been rubbed off, and a very minor scratch exists on top of one of the transformers. The lettering on the front panel is 100% perfect. Electrically and mechanically it is definitely a 10/10 having had the restoration work done and is good to go for another twenty or thirty years of flawless performance. Included is a lovely selection of audiophile tubes that have plenty of life remaining. Thank you for looking and considering this exemplary McIntosh MC275! Completely restored 1948 Gibson GA25 vintage tube amp combo. This amp sounds truly heavenly! Original Jensen 12″ and 8″ alnico speakers have been reconed by the good guys at the Circuit Shop. Both have early’48 date codes. All out of spec parts have been replaced with highest quality parts. Red Jupiter coupling caps. Sprague Atom and CE electrolytics. Carbon comp resistors on the few that were actually out of spec. Both pots have been opened and thoroughly cleaned and lubed. Still has the screw on shield for the inputs that most of these are missing. The wiring going to the speaker mounted output transformer was starting to crack in places, so I covered the 3 wires with heat shrink tubing for safety. 3 prong power cord. All vintage tubes, two-6J5s and 5Y3GT which I believe to be original RCAs, RCA 5693, which is the ultimate 6SJ7, and two Sylvania 6V6GTs. All test very good on my calibrated Hickok 6000A. The 6V6s are perfectly matched in circuit. Amp will be professionally packed up by UPS Store. First half of video is with volume halfway up, second is fully cranked. 2 Mono Blocks of Scott 240 tube amp power. Very close serial numbers: # 9918 and # 9928. Both were completely restored. One of the mono blocks acquired some water damage along the front skirt. But it has been dosed with rust neutralizer. These were made in the mid 50′s when mono was the only rage. So, to get a pair together with such close serial numbers is unheard of. These are plug and play. The power supplies were recapped with F & T caps and Allen Bradley resistors. The item “Stereo Tube Amp Pair H. H.
