1964 Fender Concert Amp. Electric Guitar / Bass Amplifier Head. Comes with homemade denim cover. It had a badly damaged termite eaten wood cabinet that I felt was too far gone to refurbish, so I kept the amp on the side. Recently (Sept 2024) I took it to my current amp tech and he replaced the filter caps, power cord, lubricated the pots. Powered it for an hour and checked operation. He says it’s now in great shape and mentioned it’s a particularly good sounding amp with balanced power tubes and a perfectly set bias operation. What I decided to do a few years ago was use a leftover Bandmaster amplifier head cabinet for this amp because it fit it perfectly. What I wanted to do was re-create Leo Fender’s prototype piggy back head cabinet that he first began to develop in 1959. In the same year he began developing his new cabinet design for the entire amplifier line by moving the amplifier control panel to the top front of the cabinets for both the combo and piggy-back amplifier designs. The Fender Concert (model # 12) was the very first amplifier he designed with the control panel facing the front. Instead of using aircraft luggage linen (tweed), he used a rubber infused vinyl developed by General Tire called Tolex. For the grill cloth he used the acoustically invisible material called Saran developed by DuPont Chemical in 1955. This is the same tweed style grille cloth material he used throughout the entire amplifier line since 1955. I decided to recreate a replica of this prototype amp. I didn’t have the exact Tolex material but I used a close copy of Rough Chocolate Brown. I also used a re-issue Fender flat logo, all new hardware throughout with the exception of the piggy-back slide brackets, and a brown strap handle on the top. I read somewhere that Fender’s piggy-back prototype amplifier head was presented to the instrumental band, The Champs, (recorded the hit song “Tequila”) in 1960. Serial # A 05409. Tube Chart Stamp – Can’t Read. (26th week of 1964). Silver Stamp Inside Chassis. (45th week of 1964). (34th week of 1964). (36th week of 1964). Red number 16 stamp. It might serve the buyers purpose to bring up the power slowly with a variac since these used amp heads are over 50 years old and have not been used for a few decades. Our amp tech has only replaced the needed parts -(filter caps & power cords as specified) to just get them turned on and running for an hour. Please see a skilled amp tech before extended use. The operation of the amps requires that they be regularly serviced for optimal performance. Please remember these are vintage pieces, we cannot guarantee that they will not need service or more parts in their future; only some obvious parts were changed to get it working. Most of the parts are still the original old parts remaining which will be stated in our listings. We do not have any control on what was done by previous owners, but we try to write in detail any information we have. We cannot guarantee that all our information is 100% correct; it is our humble opinions and own musical knowledge. Please see photos and ask questions to make your own assessment. ASK ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE PURCHASING! This discriminating collector has curated an incredible collection of guitars & amps since 1965. 1960 Fender Concert Pre-CBS Brownface Vintage Tube Amp 5G12 with Jensen P10Q

Up for sale, a 1960 Fender Concert in exceptional, collector-grade condition and in perfect working order. The very first iteration of the Concert offered, this amp has strong ties to the Tweed-era Fender amps which were being phased out concurrently with this example. The feature set includes Triad transformers, a quad of original Jensen P10Q alnico speakers, a 5G12 circuit with five tube preamp, early pinkish brown tolex and oxblood grillcloth with gold stripe, and the unusual factory-plugged “pulse adjust” hole on the back panel for an extra control Fender omitted from the circuit after the panels had already been printed. The combination of the Brownface 5G12 circuit and four matching original P10Q Jensen speakers is truly something to behold. The amp delivers sweet, dynamic clean tones with incredible sparkle and a certain high fidelity clarity noticeable as soon as you strum your first chord. Turn it up past 5 and the amp starts to smoothly overdrive with just the right amount of bite and the complex midrange bark that makes Fender’s Brownface amps the perfect middle ground between the growl and attitude of Fender’s Tweed amps and the glassy shimmer of the Blackface era. The EQ controls have an incredible wide sweep, and this amp is uncommonly warm for any Fender, never feeling too bright or brittle, with a focused bass register and ample headroom. The second channel boasts the Harmonic Vibrato circuit, which was the only Fender “Tremolo” circuit to ever have a true pitch shifting effect, with deep pulsating warbles. The circuit is virtually untouched save for a couple swapped component values to ensure optimal functionality of the vibrato and proper tube bias. The Triad output and power transformers are intact, with a Schumacher-made choke that dates to the 11th week of’60. The amp retains all of original yellow Astron molded tone caps in the preamp, central to the sweet, musical sound of Fender’s Brownface-era circuits, and visible codes on the CTS pots date to the 8th week of’60. The original Astron Minimite filter caps are all still intact and functional too, and the amp retains its original gray two-prong power cable. The Jensen P10Q speakers are the original matched quad, extremely valuable in their own right with particularly clean teal frames, original bell covers, and minty Jensen foil stickers. The dates on the edges of the frames are from the 14th week of’60, and the frames are also stamped with mini “JD” stamps, identical to the date stamp on the tube chart, translating to April of 1960. The original pinkish brown tolex and oxblood with gold stripe grillcloth are intact and in remarkable shape. There is a single minor cigarette burn on top, some staining on the sides from sap, telegraphing the knots in the solid wood enclosure, and some minor wear on the bottom of the enclosure including small caster mounting holes. The original chassis straps, nickel corners, sphinx glides, and flat “Fender” logo are all in great shape and present, and even the original “dogbone” handle is intact (although it does show signs of minor splitting). This is an extremely rare Fender Concert in stunning, original condition, produced very early in its Brownface production run. Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Concert in exceptional, collector-grade condition and in perfect working order, complete with a vintage footswitch and cover. This Concert is time capsule clean cosmetically, incredible sounding, and complete with a quad of Oxford 10″ 10K5R-1 alnico speakers with long brown metal “Fender bell covers. The combination of the Brownface 6G12-A circuit and four very rare alnico Oxfords is truly something to behold. The amp delivers sweet, dynamic clean tones with incredible sparkle and a certain high fidelity clarity that is noticeable as soon as you strum your first chord. Turn the amp up past 5 and the amp starts to smoothly overdrive with just the right amount of bite and the complex midrange bark that makes Fender’s Brownface amps the perfect middle ground between the growl and attitude of Fender’s Tweed amps and the glassy shimmer of the Blackface era. The EQ controls have an incredible wide sweep, and this amp is uncommonly warm for any Fender, never feeling too bright or brittle, with the perfect amount of midrange and focused low end. The second channel boasts the Harmonic Vibrato circuit, which was the only Fender “Tremolo” circuit to ever have a true pitch shifting effect, with deep pulsating warbles and a wide range of speeds. The circuit is very clean and original, with stock transformers that date to mid-1961, as well as a full compliment of original yellow Astron and blue Ajax molded tone caps in the preamp. The original Astron Minimite filter caps are still intact and functioning as intended, while the smaller bypass and bias caps in the preamp have been swapped in favor of parts within factory tolerances and sleeved in their original Minimite wrappers. The pots date to mid-1961 and are all stock except for one replacement for the Vibrato Speed knob, with the new pot providing an ideal taper. The power tubes are a matched pair of vintage USA-made small bottle Tung Sol 6L6s, and the preamp tubes are all vintage valves from the likes of Sylvania and Amperex aside from one new JJ tube. The Oxford 10K5R-1 speakers are a matched quad, and the elongated brown metal bell covers (only used on the first alnico magnet versions of the 10K5) are an extremely rare and cool accent used for only a matter of months by Fender. Beneath the bell covers, the alnico magnets have date stamps from the 18th week of’61. The tube chart is fully intact on the bottom of the cabinet (the common placement for many of the earliest Brownface amps), with crisp corners and an “KD” date stamp from April of 1961. The original rough brown tolex and oxblood grillcloth are intact and in remarkable shape. As the photos show, the tolex and grill show sparingly little wear, and this amp is a great candidate for any collection or studio. The speaker frames and bell covers are exceedingly clean, consistent with the chassis itself and the Brownface faceplate. The original chassis straps, nickel corners, sphinx glides, and flat “Fender” logo are all in great shape and present. The original dogbone handle is present too and still clings to the handle mounts, although there are splits on the undersides of the handle (a new dogbone is also included). This is an extremely rare Fender Brownface Concert in stunning, original condition, complete with a vintage single-button footswitch to engage the vibrato. The amp also comes with a rare dark green cover, ostensibly original, and while different from the more common Victoria-made covers, we have seen this much rarer cover material on more than a couple early Brownface amps. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions! We use double thick boxes, 1″ foam, and industrial 1/2″ bubble wrap to ensure that your amp arrives safely.
